Re:"Why is it so hard to make a good Trek game"?
The Trekverse would be a good place to set an old-fashioned adventure game. Alas, CBS Paramount will never back such a game..
I wonder how this -> http://www.startrek.perpetual.com/index.html
will do...

Re:PC version stinks and what about a MMORPG
I don't think that Legacy (PC with Keyboard) is that bad. Yes, the controls leave much to be desired and the AI could be better. But IMHO is still a decent game.
I know that a star trek MMORPG was in the works http://www.startrek.perpetual.com/. I just do not see how it will work. It isn't like everyone will get their own ship or be a department head or anything. Quests will be like go repair the warp conduit or maybe a slightly interesting one will be "here is an away mission..." IMO Star Trek just doesn't seem to lend itself to an MMO. It just doesn't seem too free-form unless everyone is a privateer (in which case, Star Trek is more of a gimmick.) -
Re:PVP and other MMOs
Actually, Perpetual does plan to offer PvP outside of the holodeck. Details are sparse, but it is a priority.
From the Gameplay FAQ:
Will there be player vs. player combat?
Yes. Although PvP is not the primary means of advancement, we are considering several different PvP opportunities. The holodeck will offer a large array of configurable dueling and arena scenarios, and though we're committed to providing PvP gameplay outside the holodeck, we are not yet ready to share specific plans. -
and down the crapper.
Meticulously sticking to details on the lighting of the carpet, but the uniforms need to be redesigned, yeah. The ones in their gallery just look wrong (example http://startrek.perpetual.com/images/gallery/conc
e pts/large/1.gif), like they have hard plastic pieces attached on shoulders and chest and added some giant boots. Looks stupid and certainly not different enough from a distance to justify it, sorry, they fail. -
Star Trek: Galaxies
Now, what are the chances that they will wreck StarTrek:Online like they did SWG?

Re:Startrek.com development
Good job there sherlock! Now lets dig a little deeper you might see things like "Perpetual Entertainment is developing just such a game" in that FAQ. Heck, you might even notice that in the article that this is about! Upon some extreme digging, er I mean googling, you might come across a slightly more official website such as http://www.startrek.perpetual.com/ instead of a Star Trek catch-all like startrek.com.
Also, you might even notice at the bottom of startrek.com that it says "This site and its contents TM & © 2005 Paramount Pictures." Now, I understand that the average slashdotter can hardly be asked to read full words, letalone the articles they comment on. So, the fact that Paramount and Perpetual both start with a P is probably reason enough for you to say that they are the same company. However, let me be one to point out that Paramount Pictures is NOT Perpetual Entertainment.
You get all that? -
Re:ObNitpick
You know, they have Michael Okuda working for them: http://startrek.perpetual.com/2005/08/perpetual_a
n nounces_addition_o.html For the uninitiated, he's the original designer of LCARS, technical consultant for all the series post TNG & the last 7 movies, and the author of numerous Star Trek reference books. He might be able to help with issues like Ready Room vs. Observation Lounge and where exactly LCARS panels are housed a little better than a random trekkie. -
Re:Sounds like every space sim I've ever played
Can always look forward to Star Trek Online for that. Let's hope they don't butcher it like, oh I don't know, Star Wars Galaxies?
http://startrek.perpetual.com/GalClassHubDeck7SciM ed.html - One of the decks on a ship. -
MMO.
Does this affect Star Trek : Online already under development by Prepetual?

Re:Forget other players. Here's what I want.
"Make it so that master engineers could coax more speed from a ship's engine and repair shields faster." I actually believe that this is the sort of thing that they are putting into the game. Have you seen the LCARS video? It shows what an engineer character will be able to do with a computer console on a ship in the game. You can change the flow to the quantum gravaton matrix (if that's an actual ST gadget then go me!) and everything else they do in the show. The warp core is yours to tinker with, or at least that's what the video suggests. It can be found here http://startrek.perpetual.com/images/gallery/shoc

Re:Announced?
In the area if MMORPG development, where so many projects seem to get canned after months or even years of development, I really don't think "announced" is newsworthy any more.
How about not publishing MMORPG stories until they're "finished" - at least finished enough to alpha test.
As a side benefit, we'll not have to read any of the "cancelled" stories the following year...
Well said! Roma Victor is in its later stages of development and testing, is being developed by an independent developer, relies largely on OSS (see their recent software patent protest), is community-driven and has shown no signs of going under at any point in the last few years.
Yet we're more likely to hear a story about a bunch of venture capitalists and corporate drones deciding that an already tired franchise would make a great MMORPG license, before they've even hired the development team!
Games like Warhammer Online and Dragon Empires get cancelled because of a lack of realism, expertise and experience on the behalf of the initial development team. Building a MMORPG is not the same as building an online computer game - and I expect these "Perpetual" suits will have to find that out the hard way too. But there's nothing to stop them from raising and burning millions of dollars in the process.
(I'll admit I'm an ancient history buff and therefore a fan of RV but I think my point still stands >D)
