Re:$300 seems an odd target...
If Sony and Microsoft expand their online stores and make "simple" games easier to develop/publish on their consoles,
They already did that! There are tons of "little games" on PSN.

Aggh. Why're people so in love with links that only read "here"? They're not quite informative.
But hey, happy new year.

Anonymous Threatened Sony
There's no way to know if this influenced it but Anonymous threatened Sony on Youtube (transcript here and a few more specifics here) the other day. Of course, even if that did influence Sony I'm sure the last thing you'd want is to send Anonymous the message that they can push you around so don't bother waiting for admission/explanation.
Looking at this list, there's far better targets of groups of lawyers and lobbyists that don't do a goddamn thing or sell any tangible product. Not sure why those wouldn't be prioritized by Anonymous but, well, that's crowdsourcing for you. Maybe they identified Sony as the biggest fish that would disrupt the highest number of placated sheep who might actually contact their senator when their opiate flow is disturbed? Nahhhh ... -

Anonymous represents something new
A new kind of organization. I would say Anonymous is a cyber intelligence organization, not just a collection of jerks.
If you don't take them seriously or look at them as a joke then you won't have a clue about whats coming next. Anonymous is going the direction WIkileaks went. This means they will build comprehensive intel files (dox) on Sony employees and on the employees of target corporations. This means they just use the internet, it does not mean Anonymous is strictly an internet organization.
http://playstationlifestyle.net/2011/04/04/anonymous-gets-serious-attacks-sony-employees/
And it's a full fledged cyberwar with sides. You will have the commercial hackers who hack for corporations, and you'll have the hacktivists who hack for Anonymous. On top of this you'll also have informants for both groups. So if you side against Anonymous or against Sony, either or both sides will know about it. So at this time the best way to look at whats going on if you want to be smart about it is from a neutral stance. Don't diminish Anonymous unless you want to be targeted by Anonymous, and don't diminish Sony unless you want to be targeted by their hackers.
Remember Anonymous is also trying to take on the Koch Bros. They aren't going to be able to do that overnight as the Koch Bros have an intel network of their own of greater sophistication and funding. What Anonymous lacks is funding, a lot of the hard detective like work requires hiring private investigators. This is something Anonymous probably wont be able to afford unless private investigators volunteer their services to their operations or are extorted in some way into doing it.
But in the long term Anonymous is growing stronger at an exponential rate. Their only flaw at this moment in time is their relative inexperience and their silly tactics at times. They go from brilliant tactics at some points in time (such as hacking the email server at HBGaryFederal), to really dumb tactics like DDOSing Sony and taking down webpages. They don't seem to have strong leadership or a set methodology of objectives to pursue.

Re:of course
Are you kidding me? They were making it so anyone could run homebrew on their OWN consoles. What they did in no way affected anyone's PS3 who didn't want have anything to do with it. The only people taking dumps on property is Sony. They have proven time and time again that they will gladly abuse their own customers. If you want to get in line for the anal rape, have at it. Some of us have some self respect.
I see you have blinders on. Cheating effects people not involved. And it is already occurring. That happens when you break the security on other peoples devices.
http://playstationlifestyle.net/2011/01/25/modern-warfare-2-online-play-crippled-by-ps3-security-breach/ http://attackofthefanboy.com/news/trophy-hack-ps3-ruining/
I didn't buy a PS3 to play homebrew. I have a PC that runs that crap perfectly fine. I purchased a PS3 to play $30 - $60 video games. Games like Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet. Trading that for homebrew is a foolish. Sony has been good to me in the past. My PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 never had any issues. My Sony TV works great. I am hardly an abused customer. I am a Sony fanboy and I have good reason to be. I have plenty of self respect. And a firmware update that prevents me from running a twenty year old ROM of Zelda is hardly anal rape.

I wonder what this guy would have to say about it http://playstationlifestyle.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/PS3-guy.JPG

Sounds like yet another Sony Stoopid
After the rootkit fisaco, Sony has done nothing to elevate themselves. Patenting some feature-limiting systems sounds like classic Sony.
In other Sony Stupidity, it seems they recently stole part of a popular Amsterdam landmark, to attract publicity towards one of their games. You'd have thought they would have learned from widely-publicized mistakes of others.

http://news.google.com/news/more?um=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=nl&cf=all&ncl=dQbgbhcNvNSes9Mf7y66XftD669lMIt is hard to believe Sony Marketing would really steal these huge, heavy steel letters without SOME kind of permit issued by the city, but I haven't been able to locate anything other than clues to Sony's breaking laws for $elf--promotion. If this marketing stunt really is true, that Sony had no city permit, I am very Angry with any corporation that would do this.
The classic quote I read in Dutch was: 'Can I reference this theft also, once Sony takes me to court for copying music CDs?'
