Artists without record contracts
I guess this is important for artists already on record contracts, but for those of us who never intend to be on one we need to experiment with alternative distribution methods. My music is available free to download and name-your-own-price on CD. http://www.politicsapocalypse.com/

New distribution models
As time passes since the innovative release of their album on the net, Radiohead has again and again proven that they are not really thinking outside the box. We musicians no longer need record companies or corporations such as Apple. I just recently released an album Politics Apocalypse available free to download at our website. It is licensed with the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Licence, which even lets you use it freely for commercial projects (so long as you give credit). We are also doing a name your own price CD (starting at cost price). Access to a members area with new music rewards donations, orders and creative feedback. Check it out and spread the word. Download and donation statistics at the website http://www.politicsapocalypse.com/

Looking for some free music to go to the visuals?
Unlike the Radiohead music our music is released via creative commons. Free even for commercial uses. http://www.politicsapocalypse.com/ I agree this is a cool thing to do but Radiohead charge people to download the sources to remix their album, they have said that the preferred way of listening is to buy the CD - not the mp3s, etc etc... Check out bands such as Nine Inch Nails to see a way of making $ while being nice to the fans.

Our music is on LegalTorrents
We released our album Politics Apocalypse online recently, including on LegalTorrents. It is available free to download. Licensed with the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License. This licence lets you use this music for commercial products or make remixes or other derivative works, so long as you give credit to the original artists. Politics Apocalypse is political and subversive post-industrial rock with an interesting mix of classical instruments, guitars, electronic beats, and a small dash of aussie hip-hop. You can download the whole 11 track album at no cost at our website. We are also doing a name your own price CD (starting at cost price). http://www.politicsapocalypse.com/

the old business model is broken...
Although it is obvious that the old business model is broken it is not clear which alternative models will work. I am currently trying out a free music approach. As I stated in a comment yesterday, last month I released Politics Apocalypse, a full length album using the creative commons licence attribution 3.0. This allows you to use the music however you please (including in commercial projects) so long as you give credit. Promotion has gone really well and we have had > 3500 full album downloads since then. We have a name-your-own-price CD; which is a unique concept where you can name your own price (starting at cost price) for a CD. And we accept donations. However, so far the number of donations and CD orders are MUCH lower than the number of album downloads and positive feedback. We have just added a new members area of the website. The members area contains new songs as they are finished, available to members long before they are released in album form to the rest of the world. Anyone who supports us by donating, ordering a CD (name-your-own-price) or submitting creative feedback are given an account. Hopefully this new addition will encourage donations. So while charging people "for nothing" (as the post is tagged) is clearly not the best idea, it is not clear what alternative is. We do have to keep trying out new ideas, until it becomes clear how the music "business" can work without the "industry"; record labels who rip off artists and consumers by charging exorbitant amounts for music in an outdated format (CDs, DRM). The statistics of downloads/orders etc are on the website. http://www.politicsapocalypse.com/ [politicsapocalypse.com]

Using the FREE model with music
Last month I released Politics Apocalypse, a full length album using the creative commons licence attribution 3.0. This allows you to use the music however you please (including in commercial projects) so long as you give credit. Since last month we have had over 3000 album downloads. We accept donations, and we have a name-your-own-price CD; which is a unique concept where you can name your own price (starting at cost price) for a CD. We have had some orders and heaps of positive feedback. We have just added a new members area of the website. The members area contains new songs as they are finished, available to members long before they are released in album form to the rest of the world. Anyone who supports us by donating, ordering a CD (name-your-own-price) or submitting creative feedback are given an account. Hopefully this new addition will encourage donations, as so far the number of donations and CD orders are much lower than the number of album downloads and positive feedback. I realise that the created music is an infinite good, but it would be nice to get some support for the amount of time it takes to create. The statistics of downloads/orders etc are on the website. http://www.politicsapocalypse.com/
