Ordinary cotton denim is plenty strong enough to do this. Testing a much smaller sample than a pants leg (two 1" square gripping pads separated by 3" of fabric) showed that ordinary denim can withstand over 800 Newtons (176 pounds) before breaking. http://www.itc.polyu.edu.hk/Us... A piece of fabric the size of a phone, being pulled on by the force of the leg, is going to be able to easily transfer the weight of a human into a force that can pull the phone around their leg. Given the video showed a guy bending a phone by pressing with his thumbs, a pants leg could easily apply as much force.

Seriously, have them play with applets like this that show them how simple things can behave very differently from an initial guess would suggest. And motivate them with "further up ahead, people are doing awesome things!"

I did some research for school over in Hong Kong for a few months and worked with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Civil Engineering Dep. They used titanium dioxide coatings on bricks and highway noise barriers - actually in use in Hong Kong. They also have attached titanium dioxide nanoparticles to textiles to make filtering clothing:

I think there are some faults in saying that 'HKU is going to close its EE department'
1. There is no 'electrical engineering' department ever in HKU. The only one is 'Electronic and Electrical Engineering'
2. The one in CUHK is 'Electronic Engineering', not 'Electrical Engineering'.
3. The "remaining" 'Electrical Engineering' is in Hong Kong Polytechnic University http://www.ee.polyu.edu.hk/
4. I think the speculation of closing 'Electrial engineering' in HKU is their UG programme. I am no insider information in this. However, I am aware that this programme has been changing a lot during the past few years. It does have a sign of 'struggling' with low enrollment.
5. HKU EEE has a sustainial resources dedicated to research in electrical engineering. It's rather hard for them to close it down for the time being.
BTW, HKUST http://www.ust.hk/ long time ago has a 'electrical engineering' UG programme. Now they remained their department name as 'electrical and electronic engineering' while they UG programme only covers 'electronics'... they only have PG level of research 'electrical' part. -

It'd be nice to see some more background; in particular what inspired them to try this. It sounds like just basic DLA. You use the EM field between the carbon "islands", then the conductive particles in suspended in the liquid move along the field lines in a somewhat Brownian manner (i.e. random, but statstically biased because of the field). Then just set it up so the particles stick to eachother. I wrote (and no doubt many others have, too) a program to simulate this. You can set up groups of attractors that follow different physical laws (e.g. inverse-square, linear, exponential), then set up particle sources (e.g. ambient sources, point sources, linear, circular, etc.). Hit "start", and you see the particles very slowly (i.e. hundreds of thousands of particles) build up into these dendritic structures. It's cool to see somebody actually doing physical work applying the theory, though.
