Stupidest lawsuit in history?
A Montana man has sued media giant Viacom, saying the MTV show "Jackass" plagiarized his name, infringed on the trademark and copyright of his name and defamed his good character. The plaintiff's name is Jack Ass.
An inmate in a Virginia penitentiary has filed a lawsuit against himself, claiming that he violated his own civil rights by getting arrested.
When fans of eating can no longer trust their cheese-covered puffs boiled in oil to be healthy, it's more than sad. It's your ticket to millions. Meredith Berkman claims the secret fat caused her "weight gain, mental anguish, outrage, and indignation."
Nope. Not even close. -
Re:Loser pays should be the way
That's WAAAY too complicated. Sounds like somethng a lawyer would dream up
...Shakespeare said it best:
The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers.

Here's a bunch more lawyer quotes http://www.power-of-attorneys.com/funny_lawyer_jo
k es.asp?type_ID=2&page=1If lawyers have such a bad reputation, its because they are not willing to clean up the act of those around them. Bar associations are, by and large, a joke. Sanctions? More like "Sue me!" A better plan would be to ban professional lawyers for all cases under, say, $500,000.00, Make it like some small-claims courts, where both sides have to represent themselves w/o legal counsel, and lawyers are not allowed to represent either side. Both sides tell their beef to the judge, and the judge decides.

Re:Cheerleading Against SCOSCO has a falsifiable hypothesis: IBM copied code from its AIX operating system to Linux. However, the evidence disproves this hypothesis.
Further, SCO has not helped itself by issuing numerous public statements that contradict their representations in court.
As far as Groklaw goes, as a lawyer I cannot emphasize enough how innovative and unique that website is. Sure, Pamela Jones has a distinct bias, but at least you know up front where she stands so you can evaluate her opinions accordingly. The real value of that site is the sheer comprehensiveness of the public statements and filings organized in its database. A resource like that would cost someone tens (or possibly hundreds) of thousands of dollars to compile privately, and yet here it is offered to the public for free. It's like open source litigation, and I hope that Groklaw or sites like it continue in the future for other legal/political/social issues (software patents anyone?).
I think that these stories on SCO are so one-sided because after more than a year on this story, it has been thoroughly exposed to the point of ridicule. It's sort of the way that the public responds to other types of lawsuits that seem frivolous at first glance; it's possible that a seemingly frivolous lawsuit may have have merit, but that doesn't stop the public from being highly sceptical.
SCO's problem is that they decided (highly unwisely from a litigation viewpoint) to spin their action in the press. This is completely contrary to standard practice when it comes to lawsuits ("No comment, the matter is before the courts"). All of their ill-informed, contradictory and bombastic press quotes are coming back to haunt them, as you can be sure that IBM will use any prior inconsistent statement to cross-examine and impeach their evidence now.

What have they got against jam bands?
Any word on whether Trey Anastacio & Co. have planned a lawsuit similar to that of a certain processed meat company for this eggregious misuse of their product name?
:)
(I think it's representative of the proclivities of the slashdot readership that it hasn't posted a dumb joke like this in the three hours that this story's been up. Or maybe it's just not funny...) -
uh
yeah, i think we should put more liability on game makers for messing up our children's lives
while we're at it, let's sue mcdonalds for making us fat, sue microsoft for making us dumb, and other stupid lawsuits
i do like this article though, it has a different prospective, it said night trap's goal was to 'save the teen girls' not kill them. i've seen worse movies, but nobody dares question the effects of hollywood. -
Re:*sigh*
It's not uncommon for law firms to start class action suits on their own. Wonder why? Law firms get something like a third of the total settlement value, and any part of the settlement unclaimed by members of the class.

Re:coffee: the death of me
Still, that does not change the fact it should not be at 190 degrees, and it would take at least a half hour, if not longer for it to cool down. I think the coffee should be no more than 160 Degrees. Someone can recieve burns at 130 to 140 Degrees.
Like I said before, She made a wrong choice to put it between her legs, but, all it would take is for someone to somehow spill it in the car "as not all cars have cup holders", if you want to talk about stupid lawsuits, the lawsuit about the so called "Defective Pickle" -
