Re:Didn't Trillian do this?
You can use an xmpp client with facebook chat. You can also use an XMPP client with MSN messenger (if you implement microsoft's auth goop). unfortunatly neither facebook or microsoft have enabled federation with there xmpp servers so they are still walled gardens, just walled gardens you can bring your own client to.

The XMPP server used is ejabberd
See ejabberd home page.
This is a flexible and powerful XMPP server written in Erlang. -
haha... but... are you considering Erlang?
An "obscure" language could well be the stand-out choice, regardless of whether the skills already exist in your organisation. You can outsource them to get a more optimal solution (Erlang consultants, for example) rather than being restricted to the lowest-common-denominator of developers you already have.
Disclaimer: I've dabbled in Erlang. -
Web based: OneTeam ?
What about OneTeam ?
OneTeam is working on all platforms with a Firefox 2 browser. It offers a native user friendly interface. Only our MSN gateways have been plugged for now, as it is in public beta and we will open gateways one at a time.
I am participating to OneTeam development but I am suggesting it here because it is still little know and we are working on improving it every day, so if you have feature requests, suggestions, criticism or praise, it is very welcome :) The forum to comment is here: http://www.process-one.net/en/forum/viewforum/9/
