Marijuana cures cancer; no film at 11...
Check out this link, which points to a story on Project Censored's list of under-reported stories of 2000. Yes, THC impaired tumor growth in most cases and actually cured the tumors in a few. Similar results were found years before, but the Reagan/Bush administration asked researchers to destroy all marijuana-related research performed between 1966-1976.
This is prong #2 of The Man's two-pronged approach: suppression of truth.

Re:You know,
What's nice about the distributed nature of the net is that code like decss can never be truly removed.
What the MPAA wants is to make DeCSS very difficult to find. Then only a few hundreds or thousands of computer geeks will have it.
Project Censored defines that something is censored when it is
a significant issue of which the public should be aware, but is not, for one reason or another.

Re:Still about protecting rights...
Just as a note -- Rob, something's wrong with the Slashdot code. My original response got cut short.
The GOVERNMENT has broken treaties with the Indians over mineral and oil rights, has broken up fair protests (Seattle), and arrested and detained citizens without due process.
On whose behest did the government do this? Yours? Mine? Was this ever voted upon? Who called the shots here?
The GOVERNMENT does not want me to buy airline tickets with cash, limits the amount of cash I can legally send using wire services and is opposed to encryption of my personal files on my computer all in the name of public safety, (and requires privately owned companies to comply with these rules). How does me whipping out a wad of Ben Franklins to pay for a plane trip to Philadelphia threaten national security?
Corporations have the right to collect information about anybody they want to, and sell it to anyone they want to, unless you, personally, tell them otherwise. What's to prevent them from selling their information to the FBI? The CIA? The BATF? You'll note also that there's no provision in the Constitution preventing corporations from invading your privacy in this manner.
The GOVERNMENT has broad search and seizure rules without need for warrant, has the right to track all firearm purchases and trips outside of our shores, has the right to mandate new taxes (even though it is forbidden by the Constitution), and has the right to fight undeclared wars against foreign powers (even though that is against the Constitution as well).
Granted, these are all gross violations of our Constitutional rights. OTOH, who benefitted from those wars? Was the war in the Balkans really about Monica?
Thanks partially to computers, partially to the end of the Cold War, and partially to the enormous amount of money corporations presently have, corporate America has almost as much power, if not more, than the Federal Government. And whatever power they don't have, they can pay a lobbyist to get for them. Who are these companies beholden to...you? me? Not unless we're shareholders with a significant amount of stock. Even the media do what the Corporate world tells it to.
So what are you going to do...blame the government for everything, or start looking at who's telling the government what to do?

Re:Healthy civil disobedience
I wrote a more detailed reply, but Netscape crashed before posting...so I'll keep this short.
You are confusing two completely different entities... Censorship usually has to do with speech, ideas, points of view, etc. What we're referring to above is sensitive information, which are more like facts, specifications, and trade secrets.
The post to which I replied - and I even quoted this, and you quoted my quote - said "Censorship is sometimes a good thing." It said nothing about "protecting sensitive information" being a good thing.Censorship is forcefully preventing speech or expression. Labeling the material under discussion "sensitive" doesn't change that.
So, based on your definition of "censorship," protecting our military secrets in the interest of keeping American citizens alive is "an evil act, pure and simple."
It's highly questionable as to how much of what's kept secret protects anyone. Anyway, not telling me something isn't censorship (except in a very loose metaphorical sense), it's keeping a secret. (Although the results can be just as bad. Check out this year's results from Project Censored.)I addressed this in the post you replied to: "Got military secrets? Fine, make sure you only tell people you trust. Don't dare try to silence me if I find out about them." Using force to silence me if I find out something you don't want me to know is censorship, and it is evil. Using force to restrict people's freedom so they don't find out certain information is censorship, and it is evil.
And if you don't believe that there are other nations that would GLADLY smash us into little tiny bits merely for being demi-free Americans, you are very sadly mistaken.
If we had a less paranoid attitude we might treat those other nations better, rather than propping up right-wing dictators, or making excuses to go to war in oil- or mineral-rich nations; and those other nations might be more kindly disposed towards us. -
Re:you actually believe all this?
Don't say
are you referring to the government itself, or the people residing within the state? the latter seems more likely...
instead go here and read the article itself; it deals with environmental pollution.
And where you say
the tenth point, "The U.S. and NATO Deliberately Started the War with Yugoslavia", just seems pathetic.
it's awful to hear you uncritically buy into the official story, that's the whole point of the article! The NATO assault against Yugoslavia - the aerial slaughter of the Albanian refugees and the Serbian civilians, the precision bombing raids against schools and hospitals, that appalling attack against the Chinese embassy which the CIA still asks us to accept as an accident, the targeting of the Serbian television outlets (which, I'll s-p-e-l-l out for you, was intended to prevent their side from broadcasting bombing-campaign video from the ground to the world; that is, the real target was your consciousness) - the whole deliberate hypocritical exercise in neo-fascism - read the "Project Censored"citation here - was sold to the American public by a systematic program of lies - "PSYOPS" - out of the news media in direct collaboration with U.S. military intelligence.
Think about what you know for a minute: how long ago did you become acquainted with the place name "Kosovo"? and who where and how did "Kosovo" come to your attention? and what "facts" do you know - the more accurate word is believe about the last three years's events in Kosovo? The answer: what the giants of the mass media, under the direct, immediate supervision of Army intelligence specialists in "pychological operations," want you to believe. And on the basis of this paper-thin synthetic "belief," after merely reading the title of the article, you dismiss that article as "pathetic."
As far as what you interpret as left-wing bias at Project Censored: such a bias may exist, but so what? While groping in the ddark-and-fog of nescience, trying to get a handle on what's going on in this farflung world, it's only good sense to take advantage of existing inter-party animosities. I rely on left-wingers to alert me to the follies, excesses and crimes of the right wing, and I rely on right-wingers to do the same regarding the follies, excesses and crimes of the left. So should you.

Don't forget Project CensoredProject Censored gets scarier and scarier every year. As the big businesses conglomerate into empires that, incidentally, own the mass media, some very disturbing stuff never gets reported on national TV or in big or medium newspapers.
Every year this project lists "the news that didn't make the news" -- stuff Noam Chomsky would shake his head at and say, "See, I told you so."
The 1999 top-ten list (I think they do 50 overall, with a special section in the yearly book for "junk food/fluff news" that got overreported):
Multinational Corporations Profit from International Brutality
2 Pharmaceutical Companies Put Profits Before Need
3 Financially Bloated American Cancer Society Fails to Prevent Cancer
4 American Sweatshops Sew U.S. Military Uniforms
5 Turkey Destroys Kurdish Villages with U.S. Weapons
6 NATO Defends Private Economic Interests in the Balkans
7 U.S. Media Reduces Foreign Coverage
8 Planned Weapons in Space Violate International Treaty
9 Louisiana Promotes Toxic Racism
10 The U.S. and NATO Deliberately Started the War with Yugoslavia
I actually had dinner with the guy who's head of this, Peter Philips. He's angry in a constructive way, and reading Project Censored makes me feel like I should be, too.
