There is a world of difference between AMDs success against Intel and the issue of Intel's anti-competitive practices. Maybe that is why you had to use all of those ad hominem attacks to encourage folks to judge ideas by the holders of those ideas, instead of the merits of those ideas.

True. It is also good for wrist pain & neck/eye strain. Yoga emphasizes that there is a counter posture for every posture your body can get into--whether it be hunching over a keyboard or swinging a golf club. When you practice yoga, you will slowly strengthen your abs and spine. You will learn how to breathe properly, something we all "forget" on the path to adulthood. Proper breathing can cure or prevent asthma, chronic bronchitis, and colds. You will also feel a subtle but positive increase in your level of physical energy.

I find it ironic that insurance companies in the U.S. won't pay for my yoga classes, but they are more than happy to pay for addictive drugs with unsavory side effects (a/k/a prescriptions).

This is offtopic, but consider the folly of making any judgement in this age. Every organization, whether private or public, requires some sort of Non-Disclosure Agreement for all involved. As well, they only disseminate information through a chosen individual or tightly-controlled group. As well, enough spin is applied to render the information worthless.

This makes me wonder about most of the stories posted on slashdot. We are handed spin from one or two sources and let loose in the forum, trying to draw conclusions from a black box.

It's the old liberal vs. conservative battle played out in a different venue. The conservative Muslims in Iran are very tenacious. After their GOP-financed overthrow of Pavlivi, they took away many freedoms from Iranians. In my life I have met many Iranians whose parents fleed the Ayatollah's brand of totalitarian Islam. Khatami was supposed to prevent that from happening again. One plus for Khatami: one of the cybercafe employees quoted is actually female! That would have never been allowed under the Ayatollah. Now that Khatami is losing power against the conservatives, expect a new wave of Iranian immigrants.

To all Americans: remember that incidents such as this crackdown always begin with some self-styled "Conservative" claiming that a thing or idea is dangerous to the moral value of the Nation.

Naivety always makes me smile. Is "The Future" some event which has passed, has its outcome been thoroughly documented?

Only last weekend I slept under a geodesic dome in the woods of coastal Georgia (U.S., not EurAsia). I briefly contemplated Fuller and his myriad ideas while falling asleep. We don't have the Dymaxion car, the instant houses, the one-cup-of-water showers, let alone his economic visions. How come? Some of his ideas may be actually impossible to bring to fruition, but that is not reason enough. The answer is that society is not ready--not ready to let go of the notion of scarcity of wealth. Fuller's ideas, whether socio-political or mechanical in nature, transcend economics. In his mind, all people are equally valuable and all rightful heirs of the earth and of humanity. Any object he designed shared the same properties: cheap, useful, sustainable, and democratic. These are all anathema to our greed-oriented society, which is tripping over itself in its attempts to consolidate all wealth and power in the hands of a few wealth addicts.

This is from one of my favorite Robert Anton Wilson articles, "Ten Good Reasons to Get out of Bed in the Morning", published in Oui back in 1977 and reprinted in Illuminati Papers:

Stalin's paranoia was a self-fulfilling prophecy; so was Bucky Fuller's optimism.
Though Fuller may have failed many a time--by the 'adult' definition of failure--his ideas still inspire and perplex. When the time comes when we have been torn asunder by Treaty-Capitalism, we can begin to save ourselves not only through Fullers inventions, but his shining example of optimism.

Zantac is the world's #1 medicine, and also the world's #1 black-market drug. That's because people with stomach ulcers [and there are a *lot* of them] have to take it daily

Thank you for unwittingly proving the parent's assertion that the drugs treat the symptoms rather than cure the disease.

The AMA claims that over 90% of ulcer cases are caused by a strain of Heliobacter Pylorii, which is carried by the housefly. The metal Bismuth is toxic to the bacterium, so Bismuth-containing OTC drugs such as Pepto-Bismol have been successful in actually curing ulcers (large quantities required, though--see your doc). Other antibiotics do the same thing. Naturopathic physicians have had similar success with such unlikely agents as cabbage juice. In both cases, the cure involves eliminating the colony of H. Pylorii from your upper GI tract.

The production of stomach acids is a normal part of the digestive cycle and should not be painful. It should also not be reduced. IIRC, Zantac reduces the secretion of stomach acids, causing the stomach to be less painful--it treats one of the symptoms. A reduction in the quantity of stomach acid causes its own problems: reduced digestion (and the slight malnutrition that obviously accompanies it...) and an increased risk of stomach cancer.

Like clockwork, the pharmaceutical companies once again push drugs to only treat the symptoms. If this wasn't true, the commercials would say "Ask your doctor about curing your ulcer with large quantities of Pepto-Bismol" instead of "Ask your doctor about Zantac". Their Macchiavellian value system ignores the ever-increasing number of side effects of all of their wares, another issue entirely.

Well folks, I hate to tell you this, but we NEED to do genetic engineering. Slowly but surely the human genetic code is going down the drains, we are introducing and keeping so many genetic imperfections that they are bound to start causing real problems soon. For instance, how many people do you know that need glasses? Or have asthma? Or are just genetically disposed to being over(or under)weight?

All the things you mention are most likely products of lifestyle. Sitting in front of a CRT for several hours every day from cradle to grave seems to precipitate the need for glasses. Asthma is probably from respiratory irritants that we haven't adapted to. Most obese people eat the wrong foods and don't exercise. It is true that scientists have found a certain gene in a majority of obese people tested for the gene, but the causation is surely the diet. The GM proponents always try to distract the audience by blaming humanity's problems on its genes.

Inserting old, incomplete genetic material into eggs looks good on the surface, but how many lifetimes will it take to accurately decide whether the GM kids are alright? No matter what, it is too early to say that GMing is 100% safe or that it will even give the recipient a higher quality of life.

Well, it's still May Day somewhere. Capitalism has its finer points, but it's best to see the seamy underside now and then--the hopes, the deceptions, the slavish devotion, the shattered dreams. I think that a purely collaborative model would enable us to have the same, if not higher, standard of living but without the dark side effects of capitalism.

Buckminster Fuller (not a communist) proved, so to speak, that wealth is infinite. It's a concept that--like capitalism--everyone has to buy into in order for it to work. The whole supply/demand model that they pushed in my undergrad buz classes is a similar concept that only works if everyone buys into the notion of perceived scarcity.

My point is that we can still have innovation, etc. without the damned rat-race and constant shift of wealth to the already wealthy. Money has become God in America, and we are spreading this religion throughout the world by force of treaty. When the illusion is finally shattered; i.e.--next time the economy crashes, remember that all we've lost is the fantasy that those little green pieces of paper actually mean something.
