Project Offset
Anybody know what happened to http://www.projectoffset.com/ ? They released tons of killer videos showing an amazing game concept, outstanding real-time effects... then Intel buys them and... nothing!

Re:Wow
This is lame. The guy doesn't even claim the video was made in real-time. He claims that the editing of the game can be done in real-time. That distinction is important, because most of the time I see someone demoing a 3-D editing tool on Youtube, they've accelerated the demo by a huge factor -- just to make the video look cool (and it does look cool that way, but it's also misleading). By the way, here is the same demo "teaser" referenced through youtube, there is actually no need to have to wait for the 3 minutes and 38 seconds on that other video for the boring guy to stop droning on, it's essentially the same teaser (with the same building and the same shading) -- it's just been spliced into the interview in small pieces (as if to imply that the teaser was made at the same speed the interview was videotaped at).

Re:"Movie-Quality"
True, and while the Meteor video looked impressive, it's nothing we haven't seen before in Crysis, and it's no where near real people walking around and speaking. I think they jumped the boat a bit on "Movie Quality", needs a few more years.

Re:Just a thought...
Speaking of which, what the hell's up with Project Offset? http://www.projectoffset.com/
They had some of the best cinematography-style graphics I've ever seen, and that was years ago with per-object motion blur and so on. I only hope it doesn't turn into Project Offset: Forever.

ok it is weird..one offs.
Project Offset is also going to be interesting.

Of course there are exceptions.
Look no further than projectoffset.com for an example of an independent on the verge of a revolution. The game engine and initial artwork/models are all done by three guys in their apartment. Living proof that great gameplay (these are the same guys who worked on Savage) and great graohics can live side by side. Just the words Epic Fantasy First Person Shooter get my juices goin!

Project Offset proves him WRONG
Taken from the project offset website's About page (http://www.projectoffset.com/team.html):
Offset Software started as 3 people: Sam McGrath, Travis Stringer and Trevor Stringer. Initally working out of an apartment and completely self-funded, the engine and all art was created with a tiny budget -- just enough to purchase the software and hardware needed for development. The budget was small but the goal was big: to create a next generation First Person Shooter set in a fantasy world (codenamed "Project Offset"), and a powerful game engine to run it.
After a year and a half of programming work by Sam McGrath on the game engine, and with the amazing artistic skills of Travis and Trevor Stringer, the three released the two "Sneak Peek" videos, showing off the technology and world behind Project Offset. The videos took the gaming industry by storm, showing that high quality, next generation technology, graphics, and gameplay rivaling that of the biggest game studios, could still be created by a small team. Shortly thereafter, Rod Green and Sharif Elcott joined the team, and thus started the expansion of the Offset team to the 19 developers that are currently involved.
Sam McGrath, Travis Stringer, and Trevor Stringer are formerly of S2 Games, the seven man development team who created the award winning game Savage: The Battle for Newerth. Savage won the grand prize at the Independent Games Festival in 2004, and was nominated for a Game Developers Choice Award. -
Re:What GFX cards need to have in future
Motion blur can be added quite easily now with todays graphics cards, before they were seen as too costly in terms for what they gave, which was just a bit of eye candy.
Project offset have really nice motion blur in. There is a techdemo video of it in action too. -
Clarifying a couple things [formatting fixed]
Hey guys, just to clarify a couple things:
- We're ex developers of S2 Games, but no longer affiliated with them. Offset Software is a new company.
- Project Offset is not a multiplayer only game. We have a single player and coop mode planned.
I've been developing this engine for about a 1.5 years now, and Travis and Trevor (the artists) started helping me out full time about six months ago. We feel like we've been making good progress, but we don't plan on completing the game with only the three of us, so we are looking for publishing opportunities and other forms of funding (licensing the engine...)
Our goal is not to just make a game with pretty graphics. We're dedicated to making the gameplay equally as good.

Re:Not a game engineThey are indeed making developer tools.
If you look at their technology page, you'll notice they are developing an editor. There are pictures of this editor in action.
http://projectoffset.com/technology.html
From that page:The Offset Editor allows all aspects of the game and game content to be created and modified inside a single application. It is built from the ground up with the goal of decreasing development time in every aspect of game creation.
Also:
Editor Framework notable features:
* For designers that prefer to work close to the metal, all content is editable external to the editor via easily readable XML files
* "Hot loading" is supported for all content files. If a file, like an image, is modified externally, the editor will automatically detect the change and reload it instantly
* Game code can be run while the designer edits a map -
Re:so...
They mention more detail about the planned game here including a rough description of the intended physics.
