Re:Oh great...All it need is a unique identifier (200 digit number anyone?) and then whoever is "reading" your license needs the apropriate authority to verify the piece of info (be it name, age, etc) with a centralized database.

Public dataCheck them out on Public Data. We did this for someone in our family and saved her from dating a person with assault charges in his recent past.

Re:If you're out in public
Same as in many states in the US, too.
Hell, you can even look it up online at www.publicdata.com -
Re:Harmful to the Republic
it is stuff that any parent already has access to: grades, attendance, discipline records. you know, no one complained about the public's right to access drivers license/criminal information until you could do it on the web. then everyone started getting antsy about it. but i remember being told (and seeing the terminal to do it) that anyone can go to the courthouse and access any info that was a matter of public record. i think this goes a little farther though. this is information that's supposed to be available only to the parent, teacher, and school admins, and now it's available to whoever has the login/password. they also mention that it shouldn't be a problem "as long as its secure", but who's to say it is? how many geek types will mess with it to see if they can change the info? and if it is comprimised in a major way, how soon with they fix it? if it can't be fixed, does the district get their money back?

Definitely not news ...Denton County actually keeps more bits of information private than other counties, say Dallas and Tarrant (home to Dallas and Fort Worth, respectively). Take a quick look at PublicData, their original market was being able to search a lot of public records about residents of Texas, Dallas County primarily.
Note that the actual records of how you vote are not exposed, as they can't be. Ballots have no identifying markings on them (unless we're using paper markings ) and they go into a locked box with every other anonymous ballot.
/me will go back to munching on a delicious burger from The Denton County Hamburger Factory and listen to reports of the horrible traffic over the Lake Lewisville bridge .. there's nothing to see here.

Re:Some Sites
check out publicdata.com for listings of Driver's License Info, License Plates, Voter's Registration, Civil and Criminal records for some counties, Sex Offender registration, and some other interesting stuff. only has info for certain states, but if you live in one of those states it's interesting to find info on that guy who keeps stealing your parking space. it costs for a subscription, but it's relatively cheap depending on how often you use it.

publicdata.com has done this for years....
It may be too late for anyone to see this, but these guys have been doing this for years in Texas, Florida, Iowa, Wyoming, and some other states. They started in Texas, IIRC, and had to move off shore when they pissed some locals off. The compile drivers' license information, automobile registration, felony records, sexually related crimes, medical exams and other publicly available data. It's pretty cheap, and anyone can get and account.

Stop the information?!??
The author of this article suggests that Lucas was somehow successful in stemming the flow of the bootleg TPM. The only movie easier to get than TPM is The Matrix. This article is just spreading censorship propaganda, saying specifically that public information should be controlled in the name of privacy.
While I'm all for privacy, public information should be readily available and the Internet is the perfect medium. Phone numbers, addresses, criminal records, and anything else that is considered a matter of public record should not be censored.
Texas has an excellent website at www.publicdata.com that contains all sorts of useful stuff - all public record.
