Who needs hits?
I actually don't really understand our obsession with "hits". There are good indie games out there for anyone who wants to look, and there are indie developers making a living off their games, as far as I can tell. I recently had a ball playing Darwinia, and Rag Doll Kung Fu.
I've made games, movies, and music, and I think it's just about artists and audiences getting over their obsession with being a big hit and dominating the world. Many of my favorite things are smaller scale things that touched me personally, and would not necessarily appeal to the mass market. And I think that's okay.
On the consoles it is far more limited, but I feel that is just an issue of openness. I mean, there wasn't much indie music on minidisc either. But the music in other formats exists, and games on the PC or online exist, and anyone with the talent and skills can still make something cool. And if they can't dominate the world and make millions like EA or Sony... oh well. I still appreciate it.
Cheers. -
boardgames & ragdoll kung fu
This would be pretty useful for boardgames, but other then that i see it being very gimmicky. I find it odd that there are pretty much no games that take advantage of something as simple as 2 computer mice, but they come up with this interactive tabletop which really offers the exact same type of interaction that 2 mice would allow.
ragdoll kung fu (http://www.ragdollkungfu.com/) is the only game I can think of that actually uses 2 mice, and i think that game would be amazing on this device. -
Re:Source?
From what I've read about Rag Doll Kung Fu it isn't actually based on the Source engine, but is in fact a standalone game. The only thing it has to do with Source is it being available through Steam.
Yes, in fact it's clearly stated on the rag doll kung fu home page.
"Rag Doll Kung Fu is the first wholly independently developed game to be distributed through Steam, using custom physics and graphics technology to give you a really fresh and unique games experience! It is not a 'Mod' and does not use Valve's Source or any other existing game engine. -
Oh really?
Sid Meier: "The days of guys building a game in their garage and then selling it to a publisher are behind us, I'm afraid."
Guess somebody forgot to tell Marcos Healy.

Not at all.Take http://www.ragdollkungfu.com/ for instance. A small game released by a single developer through Valve's Steam, that is doing very well indeed with little to no advertisement.
I, along with many other people (that will no doubt reply to this), have various concerns about a system like Steam, but it is hard to dislike it when it supports the publishing of excellent games like this that push game development into new genres.
Anything that allows independent game developers to bypass the highstreet, can only be a good thing. I just hope that ragdollkungfu is the first of many such lightweight games that can afford to be experimental and actually fun for a change.

Re:I point the world to
Rag Doll Kung Fu is the indie game cream-dream. A fine piece of work that is fantastic without a six figure budget. Valve knows what's up; 15 bucks is a good price for a game that may not have the bells, whistles and intricacy of the big game companies, but is still a lot of fun. All hail the ever-fertile steam-niggurath and her thousand young!

Re:Distribution client?
I wonder what the possibilities would be for starting a Steam-like service, but instead of peddling one's own games, instead distributing inexpensive indie games in exchange for a percentage?
I pointed this out elsewhere in the thread, but Steam already does this.
Rag Doll Kung Fu just came out, only through Steam. RDKF is an awesome time killer.
Disclosure: I have nothing to do with said game in any way, just really, really impressed. -
Why yes, I do have mad html skills...
Yeah, yeah, Preview blah blah blah... Corrected link to Rad Doll Kung Fu!
Once again, mad html skills.
