Re:How can it not succeed?
What Microsoft really needs (god I'm giving them good suggestions) is to get Ragnarok Online on the XBox, and the XBox live, and then they would have it made.
A very popular game in Korea, and other parts of the world. Hell, I'd buy an XBox just to play Ragnarok Online if I lived in Korea. ;) -
Ragnarok Online -- decent but disappointing
I don't see any mention of Korean based game, Ragnarok Online [International (English) version of the game]. It has a version specific to the base korean market as well as loosely-translated versions accommodating MMO(RP)G fans in Japan, China, the Philipines, and the "international" communities.
The difficult bit is in the so-called "RP". As with so many MMORPGs, the role-playing is lacking -- i.e., non-existent. No matter how well I try to RP, I constantly have players asking my character questions like, "What Lvl are u?"... or simplying being morons with names like ",|,," (flipping the bird?) and "<(o.0)>". Most players that don't even have a "fantasy name" based on the mythology of the game's background (Norse) are ignored by myself. I wish more people would help but many have given into the "lost cause".
How do we, the true RPGers get a company to promote RP'ing within their game? What kind of incentives can be used to kindle a true MMORPG atmosphere?
Maybe this should be a separate games./. topic/post? (btw, I've forgotten my /. password for the 593rd time -- easier just to be AC) -
Re:Sorry... no real loss.
"Somebody with bad intentions hacks into the server and destroys your virtual items. Later, the hack is revealed. The sysadmin either goes to the backup or resets a few counters. Virtual items are returned to you. Problem is solved."
I don't play EverQuest, but I have been playing Ragnarok Online for the past 4-5 months and they've had at least one (maybe 2) major incident of account hacking since I started. The one I remember, the GMs, after some delay, rolled back all of our items and money by a week. The only problem is, this affected EVERYONE and a lot of people weren't even affected by the hack (or even knew about it) in the first place and lost a lot of money and rare items gained in that time, myself included. I think during a later rollback (for reasons I can't remember) they tried to make it up to us by giving us a special double experience/double drop "event". It's debatable whether or not that tactic actually keeps players from being angry about rollbacks. -
Re:Ragnark
No actually, it's Ragnarok. Cause you see well, its a Korean MMORPG, and thats how they spell the name of their game.
Look again: Ragnarök -
Ragnarok Online
The MMORPG Ragnarok Online uses the Korean citizen ID to keep track of who is who, make people accountable for their actions (e.g. cheating), and also to prove ownership of accounts in the event you need them to do something like tell you your password. For this reason, some of those administrative things are not possible/enforceable on the International server.
What this does do is make the punishment for cheating much more severe--you can't simply establish a new account and start cheating again. But it also means Gravity might punish you when you don't think you deserve it, and in a fairly damaging way as far as the online game experience goes. Unfortunately, Gravity has a somewhat totalitarian stance on things: Regulations. I know people have been punished for complaining on the message boards (which are tied to your user account). Some of those regulations are very annoying to abide by due to the game dynamics, e.g. looting and kill-stealing. Others are extremely open to interpretation. I remember having to constantly watch my mouth because I wasn't sure who I would offend by an offhand comment.
