Re:Can we just call 'em MP3s?
There are plenty of shows (so-called "podcasts") out there that do not force people to subscribe, and that have clear direct links to MP3's and even sometimes OGG vorbis files.
A site like HackerMedia is a great place to start, they even catalogue video shows.
Most of the shows on RantRadio and RantTV also operate in the same manner, such as GAMERadio and LagRadio.
And lets not forget about TextFiles.com, Jason Scott's mirror of a little bit of everything, offering direct links to the files.
The term "Podcast" has to go... -

Internet TV
Winamp's Internet TV is a new way to watch TV online, anyone can run their own station, as long as they have the bandwidth anyway. It's not p2p, mainly due to lack of workable technology and most people's broadband connections being too slow to adequatly relay, but it does work quite well. There are many stations that broadcast everything from cartoons, technology, politics, music, and more showing up all the time. Linux users can watch with mplayer.

Re:Finding the 'trojan' mp3
The second version (the same-length-as-single one) was released a week or two afterwards, after fans were talking about home splicing uninterrupted versions of the song. (And believe me, they monitor the mailing lists and such: I put up a BNL fan page and got e-mail praise from the band's manager within 3 hours!) Just because it was released later, it was less widely distributed. I hear tales of a third version but I haven't found it to date...
