Re:As someone with an ASD
Yes, but don't expect any lazors to be shooting out of any asses for science or anything. All evidence provided is anecdotal at best, but it's the kind of thing where we'll know just how crazy it is as soon as gene sequencing drops to about $100/person. http://www.rdos.net/eng/asperg...

Re:Need more sub-definitions
Sorry but a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder is such a wide range of issues that we need things to be broken down a bit more. Saying something is ASD is as bad as labeling it Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) which is a HUGE umbrella term. I'm an Asperger Syndrome person, and not quite like everyone else but still a diagnosis of AS fits me much better than ASD.

Wherefore they are carrotheads, you mean.

Re:FIST SPORT
Don't be normal. If you think being aspie is bad, neurotypicals are infinitely worse off. They even believe their own crud, half the time, believe it or not.
For those curious about whether they have Asperger's Syndrome, there are three simple ways to self-diagnose:
- This is a superb online test. If you score 150 or more for being Aspie and less than 100 on being neurotypical, you're aspie.
On the other hand, Slashdot is going to primarily be of interest to aspies, so constitutes a test in its own right:- Do you post geeky stuff on Slashdot?
- Do people with a UID of 4 digits or less understand your jokes?
- Do you submit articles that turn out to be too nerdy for the Slashdot readership?
If you have answered Y to two or more of these, you're aspie.
Alternately, you could just look at the two "classic" symptoms:
- If you're highly stressed, does your voice go flat rather than show any of the stereotypical signs of stress?
- If you're highly focussed, does anything else in the universe exist to you?
If you answered Y to either of these, you're aspie.

Proves genetic theories as well
If this is true, it proves humans and Neanderthals were interacting at a high level. So it's almost certain that some interbreeding occurred as well and it's likely those genes are still out there. It's possible that if it was happening enough, even with incompatible genomes, this could happen.

wait, wait, wait
Autism can't be caused by brain inflammations, it is already caused by your grandmother being raped by a Neanderthal (literal)!

Aspergerian Neanderthal Theory
Perhaps the main person who has been pushing this idea is Leif Ekblad.
His extensive website is- http://www.rdos.net/eng/ (Click on left "Neanderthal Theory").
John Sokol wrote "...it's just a theory.." but as theories become more and more
developed then more and more testable hypotheses (and affordably testable hypotheses!)
begin to emerge. That seems to me anway to be the stage where things are at now (see
Ekblad's site). - inkwiztor (aka harpersnotes). -

I'm not sure if I agree but still its interesting. -

It's a very intriguing theory. You might want to check this site out: http://www.rdos.net/eng/asperger.htm

Re:Point, counter-point
As a subscriber to "The Neanderthal Theory of Autism, Asperger and ADHD" (http://www.rdos.net/eng/asperger.htm), and as a non-anthropocentric individual, I take offense at the designation "sub-human".
That theory is, by the way, potentially of interest here, since the distribution and correlation in that gene supports the validity of the theory. -
Re:Does anyone get the impression....
Why is it these days that whenever someone appears to be smarter or slightly more focused that suddenly they must have Aspergers? It's like the ADHD of the new millennium, everyone's got it.
Well, AD(H)D is a popular one for pushing drugs on kids... get them used to a life of pharmacuetical consumption. I always thought kids were supposed to have some attention deficits - I know I used to get restless after a few hours of the school day had elapsed. Kinda glad ritalin wasn't fashionable back then.
Asperger's may be to geeks what depression is to goths... It could be a popular affectation. Feel validated as part of your peer group! :)
A friend of mine passed this test on to me. I score fairly highly for autistic tendencies and low for "neurotypical" ones. I had a think about it - I don't really think I'm autistic. I'm not very socially awkward (a little rude at times but just nudge me if I don't pick it up), I like to be alone quite a bit, I'm a little pedantic and really fucking hate repetitive noises - dance music and mobile phones can kiss the fattest part of my ass. Self diagnosis: Misanthropic geek.
Not much of a disorder but then I don't define myself by my asthma either :) ...could be fun, though: "Yeah, I have fat, wheezy nerd who hates your fucking guts syndrome!" -
Geeks
I think aspergers and other geek disorders come from neanderthal hybridization. Don't be so sure about "genetic evidence" that shows this is not the case. Here is a geek who advocates this theory. http://www.rdos.net/eng/asperger.htm

Re:What's left of them?
In fact, some people have put forth the theory that people with Asperger's and Autism may be carrying Neanderthal genes.
With the high proportion of people with Autistic spectrum disorders in the computer industry; if this theory turns out to be true it would mean that many of the people here poking fun of Neanderthals might actually be carrying the genes themselves!
