  1. not just live sports on Most DVR Owners Are Recording Live Sports, Survey Says (cnet.com) · · Score: 1

My GF watches lots of TV live - reality TV and sometimes drama. If she watches it late, then the results have been spoiled on twitter/FB etc.

  2. constant mandatory reboots? on Microsoft Exec Urges Linux Developers To Try Windows 10 (softpedia.com) · · Score: 1

Why would anybody put up with such poor technology.

Linux doesn't force you to reboot, and these days you don't have to reboot at all with kernel splicing.

On the other hand the instant you step away from your desk, Windows 10 kills your applications and reboots to install upgrades. Why does it do this in 2016?

  4. XBMC interface was better in the end on Mythbuntu Linux Has Been Discontinued (softpedia.com) · · Score: 1

I feel like a lot of mindshare moved over to XBMC. Kodi has a better user interface, but I think MythTV had a better backend.

It was always somewhat challenging to get everything working perfectly, but the ability to set up recordings on one TV (or remotely by web) and watch them on another TV was/is fantastic.

Playing music was always wierd - you needed to set up nfs mounts from the music server to play the files on your remote screens - it would make a lot of sense for them to be streamed automatically from the mythtv backend. But I get the idea that maybe some quite old protocols are in use and it would be a lot of work to change them.

  9. robotic probes discredited? on How President Jimmy Carter Saved The Space Shuttle (blastingnews.com) · · Score: 1

    Why are robotic probes discredited?

Getting humans into space is ok, but we can probably get shit loads of robotic probes all over the solar system for a fraction of the cost to get 1 human to mars...

One thing that will help with humans is for us to come up with a commercial reason to have people living on the moon, as once its profitable then we'll find ourselves with a rapidly expanding colony (which will be amazing).

  10. According to recent phoronix articles its the games not the drivers. The drivers are within a few percent, but games can end up anywhere from 30% of windows performance to parity.

  20. MS have too much to gain on Microsoft Losing Ground On Windows Store and UWP For Gaming · · Score: 4, Insightful

This is their play to get their own app store. If they can get a 30% cut on all games involving DX14 for example (by obliging DX14 games to use their app store), then they will be raking it in. There is no way they will give up on this strategy, as the benefits are too high.

Personally I say fuck them, they shit on PC gaming with GfWL because they were focusing on xbox, so I'm glad that Steam ate their lunch while they weren't looking. To add insult to injury, there are games now that are defunct because they relied on GfWL which was then abandoned by MS.

It turns out that Gaben was right all along about the need for SteamOS.
