You're not the sole target for DVDs
I guess you have to actually *care* about the movies for the extras to be worth it sometimes. Perhaps you only rent movies, but for those of us who actually *buy* DVDs the extras are a nice addition.
The deleted scenes are fun and all, but for me it's the director's cuts and director's commentaries that add a new dimension to my favorite movies. Try listening to Ridley Scott's commentary on "Alien" and see if that changes your opinion of extras being worthless. -
Re:Get ready for the return of Sensoround
Quit whining about Lucas raping your childhood. Just don't go. I didn't like Jar-Jar either. Get over it. Because it's based in space, many techie types feel they own the franchise more that Lucas and the public he is hawking it to.
No, I feel that Lucas is "raping my childhood" because he says that the 1977 "cut" of Star Wars doesn't exist anymore -- see here for one quote by an offical LucasArts blurb saying "those movies don't exist anymore" (last paragraph).News flash to Georgie: You didn't earn an Oscar for the 1997 re-release (although the 1977 original earned seven and four additional nominations). In fact, in the very year you re-released your movies, "Titanic" took its' spot as #1 all-time grossing film! What you may consider horrible and unworthy of the world, that very world loves -- and what you love, the world has scorned.
To me, "history" be it factual or for amusement is all of equal weight. Would you have so cavalier an attitude about alterations if the documents in question were related to the Holocaust, or Stalin's purges? That's the same category in which I stack this or Spielberg's reedit of ET -- just because any little step like this brings us that much closer to the Ministry of Truth. -
I'm Feeling Lucky
I would keep my damned perverted teenager away from those perverted websites.
I would note that 100 year floods can occur 2 years in a row, so the search for near-Earth asteroids should continue
I think 'Want to see my tattoo?' would be a more honest pick-up line than relying on an electronic beeper that goes off when I get near someone with supposed similar interests
Oh dang - wrong post - hmm.... maybe not -
From perverted teenager result
From 100 year flood search
From 'Want to see my tattoo?'
Just too much fun! -

Isn't that copy-right protected by Aardman Studios?

James Bond parodyThis gives me flashbacks to Matt Helm where Dean Martin played a James Bond Parody. One of Matt Helm's secret weapons was a 'smart gun' that had a 10 second delay setting.
All sorts of fun with things like:click, click. stupid gun doesn't work. (looks down barrel) splat!

Why not?Didn't you people see the movie, Allegro non troppo ? Remember where the spacecraft visiting a barren world throws a mostly-empty Coke bottle out the airlock just before takeoff, and how, to the tune of Ravel's "Bolero", the micro-organisms in the liquid evolve?
Maybe that's how our civilization came into being. It would sure explain why advertising is so pervasive these days

Re:Not entirely accurate
Reel.com used to be an online movie store but now they only have movie reviews and related information and for purchases they point you to buy.com
From their FAQ:
Hollywood Entertainment Corporation has decided to get out of the e-commerce business, but not the movie content business. In other words, we will continue to publish the best movie content site on the Web, but movie orders through Reel.com will be fulfilled by an e-commerce partner, Buy.com. Reel.com will continue as a premier destination for film-related content, commerce, and community. Through the Reel.com Web site, consumers can access an entertaining environment filled with a wide variety of film-related information designed to help consumers select movies to purchase, rent, or watch in theaters. -
Re:Why do people love this movie so much?
your absolutely right. My question is, why are you even looking for a plot when the only things you comment on are superficial attributes of the film?
And the reason why the 'wrap around' camera effect have been copied a 'zillion' times is because it was origional at the time and recieved rave reviews from movie goers. If you want to see breasts in a movie, check out - chicken run -
Re:Why region codes?
You charge different prices in different regions because you want to hit a different "sweet spot" when it comes to price/volume of the product in order to generate the most profit.
You might want to try reading my post. It explains the real reason for region-codes, which is not price discrimination.
Regional price discrimination wouldn't work, and it doesn't really happen anyway. DVDs tend to be about the same price in different countries. (With the exception of those damn Lexx DVDs, that I had to order from Canada. Grumble.) -
Re:The A-list of AnimeSome of the best news in awhile, Neon Genesis Evangelion is now on DVD!
Well, not all of it yet, but just yesterday I picked up episodes 1-4 on one disc (out of 26 episodes, and two feature films) for a mere $25. Even cheaper here at reel.com.
The great thing is, you can pick sub, or dub (in 4 different languages) on the same disc, and even flip on the fly.
The other 6 discs ought to come out about 2-3 months apart, starting soon. This is definetly one of the greatest animes out there, and I HIGHLY recommend it to newcomers of anime who value story and character development over action. Its very complex and well-made, giving it an awesome replay value. Check it out!

You can still get ahold of it..

Re:Someone "gets it", but you don'tThe entertainment industry wants to ensure that only licensed players can play encrypted DVD's so that they can ensure players won't have a, "Save as unencrypted..." or even a "Save as..." option
Did you know that there is a part of copyright laws called Fair Use that gives me exactly the right to do that? Forbiding me to do this is an infringement to my right of fair use, they can do it if they want but I still have every right to bypass it as long as I don't redistribute the copies I made.
and will respect the region encoding system.
you know what, companies are wanting what is called globalisation, that is remove most (all?) barriers to exportation/inportation, me I think this can be a good idea if done properly (which isn't the case today, but this is another subject) but i also believe that it should work both way.
If the world remove custom barriers for companies so they can choose the best price anywhere I must also be able to choose the best price anywhere in the world, that is i must be able to buy a US DVD and play it on my French player, otherwise this is mondialisation only to the benefit of the companies, not of the customers (that have other names: citizens and humans, and their rights are ultimately more important than thos of companies however big they are).
Without region encoding, movie studios would have to wait until the movie is done in all parts of the world before releasing the DVD.
Like other people pointed out, I don't understand why they so much are afraid that i will buy a Charlie Chaplin movie instead of watching it in theaters that they need to encrypt it, this seem like a lot of paranoia to me.
And if they do it so they can sell it to me for more bucks because I am a poor French student but wealthy compared to an extremely poor (compared to me) Indian then I don't give a fuck, if they want mondialisation and the possibility to fabric things at the cheaper price I also want the right to buy it at the cheaper price I can find.
However, the CSS encryption allows the studios to choose to protect their assets.
No, it allows the studios to screw me, they have the right to try but I have the right not to be screwed (i.e. DeCSS).
You don't have the right to unencrypted content
Oh yeah, and I don't have right either to my VHS (unencrypted), audio-CD's (unencrypted), books (unencrypted), webpages (unencrypted),... The truth is once they sold the DVD to me I have the right to the decrypted version, what I don't have the right to is to re-distribute the encrypted version, or if I do sell a copy I must include ANY copy I have and the original too, otherwise this is copyright infringement, but I still have the right to the movie, encrypted or not.
and DeCSS would basically grant you that right.
You know what, VCR grant me the right to copy movies, CR-R the right to copy audio CD's, crowbars the right to open this fucking drawer on my desk for which I lost the key but have my report in it which I must give back yesterday morning and in which I put three months of work, and all these tools are perfectly legals, so why should DeCSS be illegal? Would you then agree that VCR, CD-burners and crowbars to be outlawed?

Re:Reel.comI've had serious problems with Reel.com in the past.
I ordered a couple of DVDs, some were preordred and some were released. A few days later I received an e-mail that said that the released DVDs had shipped. About a week and a half later they show up in my box with a postmark 4 days after they said they were shipped.
I was irate. I contacted reel.com's customer support via e-mail and explained the situation and asked what it means when I get an e-mail saying a product had shipped since I obviously didn't mean that it was turned over to the shipping company.
I got back an e-mail explaining that sometimes there are problems fulfilling orders. I tried to explain that this had nothing to do with fulfilling the order and everything to do with being honest about when the product ships. I got virtually the same response about reel.com fulfilling orders. I gave up at that point.
When I got the DVDs that I had preordred, there was no postmark on the box. Heh.
I'm assuming that e-retailers think by telling someone the package has shipped that will get the customer off of their back. But as Toysrus.com just found out, it only makes things worse in the end.
My mother ordered some gifts from toysrus.com on the day after Thanksgiving. They showed up on Wednesday. We were less than impressed.

Anime for all!!
All geeks like anime, at least the Sci-Fi stuff. If you are a geek and don't like Sci-Fi there is something wrong with you.
Some great movies/videos are:
Battle Angel Alita
Ghost in a Shell
Bubblegum Crisis (Orig & 2040) (I recommend 2040)
Cowboy Bebop
Evangelion
Spriggen (not released in english yet)
Serial Experiments Lain (turns on all geeks, who can not like a chick who upgrades a computer until there is no room left in her room? bahwahahaha. This is a mind trip series.. all about existing on an alternate universe... the Wired (the Internet), cool eh?)
Some Mangas(comic books 17-18+) are: (please don't buy these for your young geek friends/family members)
Appleseed (very cool!)
Ghost in a Shell (cool also)
Alita (9 volumes!)
Anything by Shiro Masamune is highly recomended, not sure if girl geeks will like it, some are graphic.

Pi on reel.com: $90.99????
When I saw this was out, I surfed over to Reel.com to check out pricing. Hmm, DVD is 17.99 with a saving of $7, but VHS is $90.99 with a saving of $16. So my question is: who's selling the VHS version for $107? And if VHS tapes are going up in price this much, I need to start looking around for a DVD player...
Yes, I know it's a typo, I've already sent a mail to them asking for the correct price. I just found it funny. -
Buying Pi
check reel.com - VHS is only available at rental prices ($90), but DVD is available for $18.
