Replace income with asset tax and disband NASA
Space science should be like underwater expeditions: Relatively cheap and largely pursued by commerce, philanthropy and adventure seekers, because there is an industrial base in the oceans, such as oil rigs, shipping, etc. The problem is the absence of commercial space -- and -- no -- planetary science with robotic probes don't really do much to advance space utilization.
As someone who was seriously involved in getting NASA out of competition with commercial launch services the main reason government can justify civilian space programs is that the government subsidizes wealth accumulation by taxing economic activity rather than assets. This creates a mentality among capitalists that they can sit on their capital assets rather than selling to someone who will put it to productive use. It also makes it harder to become rich since your income and capital gains are being taxed away before you can reinvest them in your manifestly productive enterprise (otherwise you wouldn't have income and capital gains).
It was during my work on getting commercial launch companies capitalized that I came to my realization that this capital market failure was at the root of what I have called "technosocialism" (think Shuttle and Tokamak). As a result I wrote down my thoughts on a net asset tax in 1992 -- which was a long time ago so I have put some thought into how to improve and simplify the proposal in a mode that it can be adopted as a county-level political economy in the event that the Federal government defaults on obligations such as Social Security (perhaps through inflation).
Sure, we do have Elon and Jeff but what it took to make that happen was the DotCon bubble which freed up enough capital in a general technological milieu that some true, dyed-in-the-wool technologists got sufficiently rich to pursue the bottle neck to all space activities: launch costs.
If the Feds stopped taxing economic activity and started taxing assets there would be 20 if not 100 guys like Elon and Jeff.

Re:Name the only candidate that would stop this..
Sure thing - how about two?
Legislation introduced by Paul that would strip federal courts of jurisdiction over 1st Amendment cases wrt to the states:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_legislation_sponsored_by_Ron_Paul#We_the_People_Act
Or a letter he wrote in 2005:
If anything, the Supreme Court should have refused to hear the Kelo case on the grounds that the 5th amendment does not apply to states. If constitutional purists hope to maintain credibility, we must reject the phony incorporation doctrine in all cases-- not only when it serves our interests.
Or do a generic search for ron paul incorporation bill of rights.

Re:Tragic...
Ron Paul - Christmas in Secular America: http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?37398-Christmas-in-Secular-America The Founding Fathers envisioned a robustly Christian yet religiously tolerant America, with churches serving as vital institutions that would eclipse the state in importance.

Re:Because Govnt can't cut Military and Entitlemen
So...you're saying we should eliminate most of the government *except* NASA? Is that the one thing out of everything the private sector can't do? Just curious because I totally wasn't expecting that from a Ron Paul supporter. Most libertarians say things like "sell it off" or "starve it to make it more efficient". And yes, I did just skim through several pages on the subject.

Re:4th?Fair questions. Different FSP members are likely to give you different answers as we all have different priorities. For me, the biggest wins are:
- Elected over 1 dozen FSP members to the State legislature
- Elected dozens of FSP members to local office all over the state (including myself, FWIW)
- Outright eliminated all knife laws in NH
- Passed a law forbidding NH from participating in the Real-ID program, or any de facto national ID that may follow therefrom
- Likely to pass a resolution this year asserting state sovereignty
- Passed laws reducing regulations on various businesses: contractors, home-schoolers
- Prevented any state income tax, sales tax, or seat belt law from passing, despite intense lobbying for such from other quarters
- Started libertarian TV shows, radio programs, and newspapers all over the state -- far more media saturation than in any other state

Don't forget the previous 900 billion
I just don't see the previous 900 billion spent on this mess mentioned that often. Is this to sugar coat that it's now at almost 2 trillion to protect corporate cronyism?
What I really love is how each and everyone who spoke during the voting called it crap. Swimming in sewage, bleeding out - some really graphic analogies. So why didn't they vote for something that was actually constructive!
I like the Kick the Traitors out idea. Next election cycle I hope just saying 'my opponent voted for the bailout' would be enough to get someone else elected. But I'm too cynical to believe that will actually work.

Re:Long-term Thinking
I have thought about that, and still have mixed feelings about it. Much as it would feel good to make the statement, and maybe startle a few people in the Rep party, would it actually accomplish anything?
I agree, there's only a chance it would. As opposed to the other options which definitely perpetuate the status quo.
I do know my business won't survive the economics of another Carter-esque presidency.
Oh, well then it gets easier, since you'd be voting for shutting down your business with either an Obama or McCain vote. They both want to impose massive socialist programs. A bit less on McCain's side if you believe his 'conversions' over the last year on crucial fundamental issues (I don't). Either way, if you're serious you ought to find a buyer now. Even if you do sell, it wouldn't be right to vote to shutdown other businesses of those less fortunate, especially since you understand the consequences. I'm assuming here you don't feel those people would be better off as government 'workers'.
This sad truth came home to me when I met not one but TWO nominal-adults who (I shit you not) DID NOT KNOW that beef comes from cows!!
Wow. Good thing they probably sat in government schools for 12 years or more! I did recently have a vegetarian tell me that cows don't need to get pregnant to produce milk. I was giving her a hard time for supporting the veal industry by eating cheese.
;)Had the thought the other day that we really should have appreciated Barry Goldwater more, back when we coulda had him..
:/I'll just include a quick link in case you're not aware of which political movement Barry is currently involved with.

space
What private ventures are these that are putting sciecne satellites in orbit and sending probes to other planets?
And what are these enterprises supposed to do, compeat with the government when the government makes all the rules?
And his racism
Yea, like releasing all nonviolent drug offenders, most of whom are not "white", is racist. "Ron Paul associates the Drug War with racism, and wants to put an end to both."

Re:Ron Paul?Ron Paul's 20% earned him zero delegates.
That 20% was popular count only (which is the 2nd or 3rd place, with 70% reporting) in a straw poll, which is "beauty" contest. Regarding the Maine delegates, he may have won with 35% delegates (at 70% of precincts reporting so far). Check here for details. -
Re:Ron Paul Denouement
FYI, as a fellow RP supporter, Ron Paul has already said a month ago that he does not anticipate the best showings in the early states and his campaign does not revolve around that. So while it could have gone better, don't be disheartened. Michigan we can do well -- lots of independents who know a democratic vote is thrown away because of the situation.
Also, don't wait for a phone call -- go to your meetup group at their next meeting and either help them out or initiate something! Good luck.

Re:it's not like people don't play dirty
I have to say that I'm surprised by the view many hold that he is not doing well. I'm not predicting that he will surely get the nomination, but he surely isn't doing poorly, either; and it is very possible that he could be nominated.

Ron Paul First Place in West Virginia Delegates

Are people still holding the view that he is doing poorly after being made aware of the above? It's hardly the end of the list. I'd say he is doing quite well when taking everything into consideration. Let's not forget that he has plenty of room to grow.
Ron Paul placing in the top three in Iowa and first place in New Hampshire doesn't seem bad at all. -

Re:He Knows This
How the heck is Ron Paul going to win if you and like-minded supporters aren't going to vote for him in the primaries? I assume you are in South Carolina, the only state Colbert is running in.
Also, are you really saying that you will vote for Colbert in the primaries over Paul? I have no problem with that... but it seems like a huge assumption you are talking about voting for Colbert in the general elections (unless you write his name in) and not just primaries.
Am I the only one confused?

Re:With one exception - Ron Paul
Ron Paul won both the MSNBC and the FOX polls after both debates.
RP has had more hits on YouTube than any other RP candidate.
Also he is 4th in fund raising, and is rumored to have more than McCain at this point.
And most scientific polls that you are probably referring to don't even bother to mention Ron Paul which would explain why he is "so low in the polls".
He actually does have a chance of winning the GOP nomination, and if he gets the nomination, he will beat any Democrat in the general election; he's a guaranteed win.
