NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Word on campus (RPI) is that some kids lost Network Access (temporarily) for posting copyrighted movies. Most everyone shares MP3s (many people have password-protected their folders now) but nothing has happened to them.

If another RPI student could verify this, it'd be appreciated. I know plenty of them cruise slashdot.

Here's a link to a project that already has some function at 2GHz, and is planning to step to 4GHz with some of the new technologies. Cool stuff, and a great group of guys.

This includes some chip shots, as well as descriptions of several of the new technologies that are being used for the project.

I'm a junior at the CS program at SUNY Albany (thank G-d the CS dept is all *nix). I was horrified when I heard from a friend that a well known neiboring college (RPI) CS dept switched to MS VC++/NT/95/98. I do not have any confirmation of this, but I use to think that RPI was a mostly *nix school (or now maybe only the EE dept.)

Another good school pumping out MS drones :(

At least the SUNY systems colleges' CS depts use *nix (or at least Albany and Buffalo).

I'm not going to reiterate all of it, but Selmer Bringsjord has written and collected a lot of interesting information about robots, Turing Tests, and the state of the art.

It's got some stories generated by the program, and other information by Selmer. (Incidentally, I've now had Selmer for three separate courses, and he is one of the absolute best professors I've had in my four years. Period.) Selmer fully believes that "true" AI is impossible, and that man is more than a machine, but has devoted his life to the study of AI anyway, and finding close approximations.

Here, all the freshmen are required to have laptops (most of us got the IBM 600E, "linux-certified", but anyway). Now that we all have laptops, professors use Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations (we're required to have a Windows partition) to give their lectures, and they upload the lecture to the course website. That way, I can zone out during the class (or not even attend, if it's a large enough class) and not miss anything.

Last year I got to take a course at RPI in GA's, where we used the Mitchell book. It is a great introduction to the field. We had several practial and fun programming assignments using GALib, a very complete C++ library implementing almost everything described in Mitchel's book. If you're looking for what else is happening in the field, in particular evolutionary computation, I would suggest John Holland's From Chaos To Order.

I'm not the one who originally responded to you, but a book from mid to late 80's is just too old. The interessant algorithms were found later ; for instance EZW (Embedded Zero Tree - patented ; published in 1993, historically well known) ; and one of the most efficient, SPIHT (Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees ; patented ; published in 1996).

Having tried that same wavelet compression engine, we compressed images with it at the highest possible quality. 640x480x8 images came out around 65-69K, with both wavelet and JPEG. The wavelets were of a quality we considered unacceptable. The JPEGs were very difficult to distinguish from the originals (excepting almost flat colour areas and sharp borders
Hmm... 640x480x8 compressed to 65K is a compression ration of 3 (or 9)... This may be the problem ; wavelets specially shine at higher levels of compression (or at least that's the impression I got from the research papers, their results seem to focus in the less-than-1-bpp range). This is why you don't see the blocking artifacts of JPEG ; but at high levels of compression, JPEG is really ugly.

You may also note that the first thing I said in my post was that this research was done more than a year ago. It was, admittedly, only done on the web, but I figured most companies touting such a technology at a level appropriate for multimedia applications for home-users would also be trying to provide us all with browser plug-ins.

Note that since there are many patents, the engines might use some suboptimal variant of wavelet.
If you don't have tested them, the following engines and results are still available:

• AWIC, works on Sun (compile on Linux, but doesn't work as is). Not a sophisticated compressor, but fast. Some results are on the WWW site.
• SPIHT home page. There are no (longer?) source code, but some binaries (for Windows, and some Unices - not Linux). Also there are some examples.
• "GNU Wavelet Image Codec" from a PhD, with program for Linux, and demo images on the page.
• PSNR results, gives numerical results for published algorithms (GWIC and AWIC would be at/near the bottom of the worse algorithms there).

Ghostscript doesnt do anything for "windows only" printers like the 71x, 72x, and 8xx series because they use a special language called PPA as opposed to the traditional language PCL that ghostscript can do. The printers do not, however, have any special reliance on Windows "hooks" as one poast put it. HP just made the (BAD) decision to make the protocol they use for these printers proprietary and they refuse to release specs without an NDA. There is, in fact, a driver for these printers written by a third party but it is buggy and only supports black and white. I totally agree that if HP is serious about open source they should (at least) help this guy with the driver development (or maybe even write their own). Maybe we should start a petition or something.
