I assume you've read a great deal of articles on the subject? If you have, you might have noticed that I'm only 15 years old; which means I go to school. Norway is GMT+01. You should be able to figure out the time difference, and when I would be available for comment :)

Yeah, and I think at least everyone on the LiViD list knows what kind of person Declan is. Highly amusing that his first article on DeCSS was just about calling for the head Jon, and yet he was at the protest outside the 2600 court case in NYC.

Interestingly enough, I went to one of Chomsky's recent talks at the University of Maryland, and he was asked about comparing code and speech.

He said flat out that all computer code is, is a "theory typed up in a funny code, so that a computer can read it". He reiterated all computer code as equivalent to theory, and then used that to show how it was a stupid idea to try to make a sentient AI.

Being just a complex theory, can't make it sentient.

It also didn't matter what anyone was doing when police were shooting at protesters and passer-bys alike at their heads. People who expected a peacefull march down the street were more of a target then the more militant protesters. It is the militants who showed courage in their determination and lack of fear.

  13. Re:DeCSS on USA Gov. Brief in MPAA vs. 2600 case Online · · Score: 1

That may be what he said later, but DeCSS was written for windows because it was mostly the original program just disassembled.

It was partially based off of LiViD code and a copy of the source was give to the writter of cssauth, Derek Fawcus. It was mentioned on LiViD that code to decrypt CSS now existed, and a link to a ftp site was posted.

That ftp site, if one explored, had a copy of the source for the first hour or so, then it was pulled. About 10 people or so downloaded a copy of the source code. No one would publish it, due to the fact that it was clearly ripped from the windows player and they were worried about legal problems.

Derek said he would rewrite the code, so a clean room implimentation would be available as well as adding a couple more features. He, unfortunitly, had to deal with some personal engagments and after a considerable bit of time still no code was available. Finally, someone anonymously posted the code to LiViD. 2 days later CSS was completly defeated.

So it was LiViD who wanted the linux player, DeCSS was written because someone thought it would be cool to do so. Just like Drink or Die's earlier descrambler, neither really did much other then say "We are smarter then you" to the entire DVD industry.
