Re:PGP / GPG in mail
How about something useful like GPG/PGP in mail. Rather than have to wait for some third party to do it.
Your wait has been over for a few years now...
Here's a nice how-to on using GPG Tools with macOS Mail:

Slashmail vs Runbox
Slashmail costs money, so it's no direct alternative to ad-based webmail like gmail/hotmail. But how does this Slashmail service compare to Runbox?
http://www.runbox.com/
Can I use Slashmail with a POP client like Eudora to retrieve my messages without logging in to the webmail account itself? Or will I have to use this IMAP thing?
Slashmail is 13.95$ a year, while Runbox is 29.95$ (or 20$ yearly for 3 years). Both offer 30 days free trial.

So use an alternative (e.g., Runbox)If you don't like what Hotmail is doing, switch to an alternative. If you're willing to pay a little anyway, there are lots of good services available. One is Runbox. I make no money from them; I'm just a happy customer. Google mail is obviously a possibility (though they're only in beta testing right now).
I love it when customers say, "Nah, I'm going to switch." If they do that often enough, companies are forced to provide better service or better prices to all of us. Invisible hand, yadda yadda.

Re:what I would pay for...
You can check out Runbox. It offers IMAP and will have 1GB of space at the end of the month.

Re:An (almost) happy Shaw customer
Dont real internet users stop relying on their (perhaps changing) ISP's e-mail address, and get one from a dedicated e-mail provider?

Re:An (almost) happy Shaw customer
Why not host your mail separately with a dedicated email provider? Since email is their business, they make sure it's reliable.
I'm rather fond of FastMail.FM, though I've heard that others like Runbox are quite good as well.

Time to Look for Alternatives
Yahoo used to be a pretty cool mail service, a place to have a permanent email address regardless of where you were at, but that has changed, now they have removed some of the best features pop and forwarding, and you have to put up with ads and spam.
And then they want you to pay through the nose for the pop and forwarding. For 25MB extra storage space I was already paying $30 per year, which should be more than enough to cover their costs for my account.
Fortunately Yahoo is not the only one in this space. Of course, there is hotmail, but unfortunately it's even worse, i.e. spam and only 2mb storage space, so it's better to try something else.
Emailaddresses.com has a list of free web based emails and for a fee emails. I'll probably be switching to Runbox.com which offers 100MB for 3 years for $59, with no ads and a lot more features than yahoo offers for the same price.
hushmail.com might be a good one if you always run IE as your web browser.
I'd be interested to know of any other decent web and pop email service alternatives.
