Re:This is great news!
Too bad Texas is suffering from a failing education system and an obsession will bathroom inspections
Rocket scientists might just decide to stick with a state that isn't run by religious nutbars

Re:ew
Don't forget that there are many young, underage kids that are now sex offenders in the glorious United States.
"Throughout the United States, children as young as nine years old who are adjudicated delinquent may be subject to sex offender registration laws"

I can recall several years ago a story about two young girls, not even in middle school becoming registered sex offenders for sending pictures of themselves to each other. Under current laws, they were "producing child pornography".
Sure, there are a lot of sick fucks out there, but the current method is completely broken.

What about the Patriot Act II?
I had posted the same link That Cringely has on his site that talls the story how Bush used the capture of Saddam as a front to sign the Patriot Act II into law. STILL the
/. folks seemed to ignore it and even Cringely's comments on it in this article. I guess SCO is more important than your rights as US citizens (for those of you who are). -
BAD: Govt Surveillance
If there's one technological move that scares the bejeezus out of me it's the US government's rapid deployment of intrusive technology to monitor individuals, or to track their movements and actions.
Whether it's Patriot Two, and the far reaching powers that it gives government agencies to snoop at just about anything you can think of in your life, or the fingerprinting and scanning of people entering or leaving the country, or the increasing use of things like EZ_Pass by law enforcement, it seems that overall this is probably the worst abuse of technology that we can imagine.
Add to these the powers given to corporate interests by things like the DMCA, and it seems that technology is being used to strip away many, many fundamental rights that we should enjoy as citizens.

The answer is......That the Canadian legal system has taken a wrong turn.
In the name of protecting women from degrading images, they have banned lesbian porn repeatedly.
Canadian courts need to recognize that free speech means that things you don't like might be said, and that's OK.
Before anyone gets excited about a USian attacking Canada, the U.S. isn't doing any better, and that bugs me, too.
Full Disclosure: I used to work (volunteer) on a magazine who had issues banned by Canada. Thank Gloria Steinem for keeping Canada free from the filth I spew.
