Re:How do you do this?
You wouldn't be able to do it on hosted webspace - those things usually only allow you to use the http daemon provided. You'd need to actually rent a server, which is usually quite expensive.
For SSL proxying, you'd need to use something like this - never set one up, but it looks about right. Of course, the server would need to be outside the UK to avoid getting logged. If you don't want to go to the trouble of setting up your own, you could try something like FreeNet*, Tor*, JAP** or just a random anonymous SSL proxy (Proxomitron or MultiProxy might prove useful here). If you're a little less paranoid, you could use a CGI proxy.
* Warning: using these systems may mean that child porn is passing through your system, iirc.
** I know that at one point this system was discovered to have a government backdoor in it, but I think they cleaned up their act. -

Try it yourself
I wonder what exactly gets through
Hop on a chinese proxy server and see for yourself:
Chinese Proxy List Part 1
Chinese Proxy List Part 2
I've been poking around with 202.96.60.61:80 and until a few minutes ago was getting nothing from news.google.com but a timeout (all other websites seem to work) -

Want to troll Slashdot With Impunity?
Then just use anonymous HTTP proxies! Just pick an address and port combination from the vast list available at the afore mentioned web site. Then enter this information in the proxy settings for your browser/OS combination of choice. In Windows, for example, open the Internet Opions applet in the Control Panel. Click on the 'Connections' tab, and then on the 'LAN Settings' button at the bottom of the tab. Another window will pop up. Under the 'Proxy server' section of that window, click the checkbox there to enable use of a proxy server. Enter your server address and port of choice, click ok on all the open windows, and VOILA! You are free to troll away to your heart's content.
:-)
Of course, there are thousands of addresses and Slashdot can't ban them all, plus there are always more addresses becomming available. So don't worry, you'll always be able to post anonymously, to your heart's content. You may need to try several addresses before you find one that's fast enough for your like or whatever. But, no worries, there's a ton of them! :-)
Now go forth, by children, and spread the FUCKING HATE! :-P -
Re:Why would they want it?
Your school was blocked because somewhere in the site is an article about Taiwan, Fa Lun Gong, Tibet, Hong Kong, or a high ranking government official. Standard procedure to block the school's whole network. If you really want to get to your uni's website you can use a proxy. I always get my proxy lists here and check to see if it's useable here.
Just as the Mongols found a way to get inside the original Great Wall, you too can find your way outside the Great Firewall of modern times. :) -
What I want to know is: what about proxy servers?Everyone keeps talking about the RIAA subpoenas to get user information about IP addresses from ISPs. This is assuming that the RIAA got the IP address from what is reported by KaZaA or Gnutella client right?
Does KaZaA or Gnutella find the actual IP address the user is at, or simply the proxy IP they may be using?
What happens if they subpoena a proxy IP?
All someone has to do is run with a proxy of one of the 'high anonymity' found at this site, one of many, and really smooth people can probably create a chain of proxy servers to run through to hide their true IP.

Re:Make Spammers Pay ...
If you just typed in the URL, you wouldn't get an referrer, would you?
And yeah, could someone make a script out of this? Like a daemon that runs in the background,
perhaps using some anonymizing proxies across the globe? -

Re:Robots.txt
One thing to keep in mind is that much email address harvesting it done from cheap dialup accounts over short periods. Harvester vendors want to sell software to dumb users who think they are collecting "free" lists to spam at. These spiders don't have the option of working slowly or jumping IPs and are easy pray for Robotcop.
Actually, they do have the option, they just need to be rewritten to take advantage of it. What we have here is an arms race; its only a matter of time before email siphoning bots have proxy-bouncing built into them. :\ Then well need to do something else to keep them away, which theys find a way through once again. -
Use Proxy Servers and creative protestsAccessing the data is easy - there are lots of web proxy servers, operated for different reasons, that make effective censorship difficult.
- The Google Search Engine
- The Wayback Machine www.archive.org historical archive
- Anonymizer.com and similar privacy services (some free, some paid)
- thousands of web proxies around the world
- more web caching sites and software
The hard part is to find creative ways to get the public, and maybe the politicans, to understand what evil things the politicians are doing. I don't understand the local attitudes in your areas well enough to say what are the best ways to present your case. Some ideas I can think of:
- You are trying to research the evils that the Nazis did during the War, and you are trying to research the evils that remaining Nazis are doing today, and these internet censors are making it hard to locate the evildoers. Or you help organizations that watch Nazis to find them on the web, but the censorship makes it difficult.
- The censorship tools are forcing the current Nazis to use higher technology - bad enough that those partially-literate thugs are using the Internet, but now the censors are giving them a reason to learn more technology which they will use to organize their evil groups in secrecy, instead of more public locations where they can be found.
- Perhaps you have Internet services that you want to prevent Nazis from using, but it is difficult to identify the Nazis because of the censorship.
- Perhaps the censorship is hiding other things, not just Nazis - Former Stasi? Corruption? Lazy Police? The only way to know is to permit transparency.
