Second Life Welcomes Alien Abductors
Thanks to GamePro for their report discussing the post-Beta launch phase of MMO title Second Life. The piece gives a handy overview of the unique parts of this 3D subscription-based PC title: "Certain areas, called 'sandbox' sims, allow you to build and script stuff in the game world for free.. [such as] domino rallies, giant houses of cards, odd sculptures, and so on - and anyone passing by is free to interact with them as they please." But this freedom has led to strange, cosmic forces being unleashed: "..someone's going around the world and 'abducting' people with a brownish alien spacecraft, sucking them up with a blue tractor beam and letting them go after a short period." There's more coverage via this forum thread and 'enfant terrible' Wagner James Au's column on the Second Life site itself, 'Notes From A New World'. -

Second Life MMOG Launches
Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing out a SFGate.com article about the official launch of MMO title Second Life, a "rapidly growing and constantly changing 3D online society, shaped entirely by its residents", which has its public unveiling today. We covered this interesting user-shaped virtual world a few weeks back, and it's now open for business, with a free Windows client download and monthly subscription fees. It's also one of the few MMO titles to have a DMCA complaints page for infringing user-created content, where complainants must fill out a form "identify[ing] in detail the location of the copyrighted work that you believe has been infringed upon. For example 'The copyrighted work I am referring to is located on the map area labeled 'Freelon, 104,30,56'.'" -
Second Life Opens Public Beta
thehossman writes "A friend of mine works for Linden Lab, and for the past few months he's been hyping their upcoming product: Second Life. I've just been nodding my head, and ignoring him, but last week he logged in and gave me a mini-tour of the VR world (and some things their alpha-testers have helped create) and I was blown away. Now they've announced their public beta, and if you've got a machine that can handle it, I highly advise you to check it out." This is another of the lifestyle-focused massively multiplayer titles that seem to have very big (venture capital?) budgets backing them - can they succeed? -
