Re:Free software in action
lol! you say that like a browser is some complex piece of software.

0 vulnerabilities. so, yeah, you're a fucking idiot.

To add some information to the void..
The vulnerability *only* affects the current 3.6 branch. Patch is complete and will be pushed on the 30th of March.
Here is the Mozilla blog entry on the topic:
http://blog.mozilla.com/security/2010/03/18/update-on-secunia-advisory-sa38608Here is the original bug report:
http://secunia.com/advisories/38608Ps: can we please get security related articles with some content instead of *OMG, we are all going to die!!* ??

Re:Yeah...
So are you going to block all image/jpeg and image/png, which is probably 60% of the static images on the web (including GIF), because you know there's at least one exploit for each out there? Your idea of the web suddenly becomes very dull and useless - you might as well convert all text/html to text/plain while you're at it.

Re:My money is on Chrome
Microsoft has still not issued a patch for their Charset Inheritance Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability that was found three years ago. The flaw exists in the current version of IE 8.
You may remember in January there was a flaw in Internet Explorer that Microsoft knew about for several months before they delivered a patch. Before the patch was delivered, the flaw was widely exploited by Operation Aurora.
Now, you're trying to equate those fuckups to Mozilla holding back on releasing a patch for two weeks when there's no sign that the vulnerability is being exploited at all? In case you can't see what the difference is, Microsoft delays patches far longer and gives black hats far more opportunity to exploit the vulnerabilities. How do you think all those botnets get created?
-
Re:DOJ v MS
Exploits based on HTML-based help files. If you can get a user to download and "execute" an HTML-help file from an untrustworthy source, even with a "safe" browser, you'll trigger the IE-related HTML rendering DLLs to display the help file.
There was at least one fairly old vulnerability that Microsoft patched years ago, but the basic attack surface is unchanged.

Re:OMFG
Mozilla is aware of the claim of a zero-day in Firefox as posted here: http://secunia.com/advisories/38608/. We cannot confirm the report as we have received no details regarding the reported vulnerability, such as a proof-of-concept or steps to reproduce. We’ve attempted to contact the researcher who discovered the issue but have not received a response.
Secunia: omfg Firefox has a vulnerability!!!
Mozilla: ok so what are the specifics?
Secunia: ...
Mozilla: Hello?

Mozilla: Anyone?
Secunia a few days ago: Right then... here are the details...

IE-only sites are numerous."I swear I haven't seen an IE-only site in several years now."
I saw an IE-only site yesterday. Include not only web sites that don't work without IE, but also web sites that don't work completely correctly without IE.
Microsoft's apparent plan:- Make a new browser, IE9, that doesn't work with the most used OS on the planet, Windows XP.
- Be slow in supporting IE8, making companies concerned about vulnerabilities. That causes them to consider buying another OS from Microsoft.
- Eventually stop supporting IE8, thus forcing companies using Windows XP to buy another OS from Microsoft, because the browser is the most vulnerable component of the OS.
For the humorous version of this guess, see Little known background story.
For those who say that Windows XP is old, I say that Windows XP SP2 was the first release version of Windows XP, in my opinion. Windows XP SP2, released August 25, 2004, 5 1/2 years ago, fixed some very nasty bugs. Companies want to work on their business, not fiddle with computer systems. -
Further details available in Customer Area
It's a critical vulnerability that allows remote code execution. Why did is it taking over a month to fix?
-
Little known background story
You are probably wondering how this could happen:
Microsoft manager: Our evil level has dropped to 9,386,556,335,456,844!! What will we do?
Microsoft drones: Make a new browser with proprietary features!!! Extend! Extinguish! Egregious! Execrable! Excrement! Enough?
Microsoft manager: X%$#X#!!!
Drones: Be slow in supporting IE8!!!
Microsoft manager: Excellent!
Drones: Eventually stop supporting IE8!!!
Microsoft manager: Evil!
Drones: Give evasive reasons!
Microsoft manager: Evil! Evil!
Okay, some of this may be fiction, but I am not sure what part. -
OPERA RULES SPEED & SECURITY AREAS
"I've been using Opera for ages. For a long time, it was really the only choice for power users. Every other browser would crash or slow to a crawl when you had more than a few dozen pages open. Back in my Pentium II 200MHz days, I needed 200 pages open to inconvenience Opera." - by by mcvos (645701) on Friday March 19, @09:33AM (#31537132)
Agreed, & same here: I've been using Opera since, oh, Versio 4.x & I love it... here are the reasons why (BETTER SPEED & SECURITY mainly)!
(Also - with a small correction for you to note & see, @ the bottom though):
IF you love speed online (fastest renderer around for webpage data AND scripting too, both YEARS ago -> http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html#win , and last year too -> http://crave.cnet.co.uk/software/0,39029471,49302491,00.htm , is Opera 10.5.3315 (AND, also per the SunSpider benchmarks recently done this month no less, passing FireFox AND EVEN GOOGLE CHROME yet again -> http://www.pcpro.co.uk/gallery/features/356350/on-test-the-hidden-seven-browsers-in-the-windows-ballot/145087 (which Opera USUALLY owns javascript processing speeds too, but FF passed them BRIEFLY earlier this year is all, for once, in that area)) AND if you love security too!)

Opera's got features most browsers need "bolted on" addons for, except Opera has them natively (as well as having a widgets addons set for it as well, IF you need that kind of thing (I really do not, it comes with all the features I like such as popup blocking, script blocks or accepts BY SITE (via its various

Well, on this note? I have to 'burst your bubble', because according to that last URL on speed above (sunspider javascript tests etc.)? Opera's got a LARGE memory footprint now (but, the more you stay in RAM, the faster you go, period... far faster than diskbound accesses, as I am sure you are aware of) - this was just some "FYI" for you is all (believe you me, I am the LAST GUY that will ever "cut down" Opera, & because of its strengths in online speed, and security too).

FF, Chrome, IE? Slow by comparison & insecure
"We code for, and test against, IE 6+, FireFox 2+, Safari 3+, Chrome 4+ and Opera 9+. And it sucks. With all the supposedly intelligent and future thinking people pushing the Internet forward, I am stunned at their inability to comply with W3C standards. Yeah, yeah, W3C documents are the 'drying paint' of the internet, but they are what all browser developers are supposed to be aiming for. Opera's CONSISTENTLY free of security vulnerabilities too, year-in & year-out... (or, moreso typically than the other 2 of the "big 3", that is) - and features?
Opera's got features most browsers need "bolted on" addons for, except Opera has them natively (as well as having a widgets addons set for it as well, IF you need that kind of thing (I really do not, it comes with all the features I like such as popup blocking, script blocks or accepts BY SITE (via its various
.ini files it has) too & more, far more).APK
P.S.=> So, in the end? For better SPEED online (both HTML/XHTML/XML + javascript processing) AND BETTER OVERALL SECURITY ONLINE? Go Opera... apk

Opera RULES in SPEED ONLINE (& security too)
"Opera must be doing something right, that all the other browsers are missing." - by Runaway1956 (1322357) on Friday March 19, @09:27AM (#31536984) Homepage
They surely are: ESPECIALLY IN THE AREAS OF BETTER ONLINE SPEED and SECURITY (consistently over time no less - see the url's below for verification no less):

Go Opera... apk

Well - How about THESE #'s, over time, in the areas of BOTH SPEED & SECURITY?? It's actually quite fair to judge Opera on those areas, especially IF you check the URL's below that have tested Opera in benchmarks for speed (Security ratings are below too):

Re:It is the most important open source project.
OK, taking you seriously for a moment. Scroll down for the "where" and "impact" graphs.
Windows Server 2008
And, because Secunia categorizes each OpenBSD release separately...
OpenBSD 4.4
OpenBSD 4.3
OpenBSD 4.2
OpenBSD 4.1

Obviously, the most important one in there is "system access", "from remote". Big difference, no? -

OK, taking you seriously for a moment. Scroll down for the "where" and "impact" graphs.

And, because Secunia categorizes each OpenBSD release separately...

Re:But if they just buy our software
We can manage all those patches for them!
Secunia PSI is free and has about 2.3 million users.
But by Secunia's own estimates, most users would score a respectable 85% or so without their update scanner.

Re:Not just Adobe
That bug is fairly old and has been fixed for awhile, there is a newer security flaw for Foxit reader 3 which is equally as dangerous, SA37049. This is patched as well. I'm not sure you will gain better security by changing to another PDF reader.

Adobe is a security nightmare
(Note: Trying not to slashvertise, just sharing some info about a program that's helped me stay secure. I have no affiliation with Secunia, I just like the tool a lot.)
I scan with Secunia's (a Danish computer security company) freeware tool to check if I have insecure applications.
3 times out of 4, when something has a category 4 or category 5 exploit (e.x. click2own), it's Adobe Flash Player, Shockwave, AIR, Reader/Acrobat, etc.
It's also interesting because it tells you if your browsers are insecure (due to plugins or the browser itself). Both IE8 and Chrome are insecure in current versions with all patches.
It was pretty eye opening for me, because I thought that I kept secure, but I had 20 insecure applications when I first got the scanner. I'm always skeptical about getting stuff for free, but I imagine that Secunia uses the data to improve the accuracy of their business software.
To return to the story topic... when possible, use Adobe alternatives (e.x. Sumatra instead of Adobe Reader) and check your flash player and shockwave player versions at least once a week.
Firefox Users can use Mozilla's plugin check.
One more thing in my diatribe...recent versions of the Shockwave Player don't update correctly. I installed the latest version to fix a couple critical vulnerabilities only to find out that it wouldn't reomve the vulnerable files from my system directory. I had to download the Shockwave uninstaller, reboot my PC, reinstall shockwave, and reboot again. I felt like I was back on Windows 9x again. -
Re:never mentions design or economics
Take a look at SQL Server, compare its security record to any other database with a decent market share on the market.
Any other database with a decent market share? Alright, let's take one that has a larger market share than Microsoft SQL servers ever had.
