What Does the Open Source Community Need?
dlc asks: "i have a simple question for slashdot readers. let's say, hypothetically speaking, that i have a Linux box, co-located on a fast pipe, with fresh builds of the kernel, Apache, mod_perl, and MySQL, and i want to contribute back to the community. we already have a slashdot and a freshmeat, a segfault and a themes.org, a linux.com and a kernel.org; what else is there to be done? What do Slashdot readers want that they cannot find somewhere else? Is a user-driven site (such as Slashdot or Freshmeat) preferable to a content driven site (such as linux.com or kernel.org)? " -
Segfault South Park Geek Extravaganza
Effugas writes "Possibly the best post ever to hit Segfault--South Park: The Computer Episode. It's brilliant; arguably the best style adaptation I've seen in a very long time. Absolutely hilarious, too." Warning:You may not want to read this at work if your supervisor is nearby. It could leave you laughing helplessly for 1/2 hour or more. -

UF/BeDope/Segfault Shutdown!
Well, after doing some checking around today, it appears that as yet unknown entity has managed to shutdown BeDope, User Friendly, and Segfault. -
Web Sites Shut Down
Over 600 readers submitted that the popular comic strip User Friendly has been shut down indefinitely following the injunction against the site from an, as yet not publicly named person. This adds Illiad's site to Segfault and Bedope, each of which also has gone down following complaints regarding content. -
Segfault and User Friendly threatened
Blank Space wrote in stating "Someone claiming to be representing a corporation has demanded that Segfault and UserFriendly remove parodies using its trademarked name from their sites." Anyone know which corporation? In other nonsense today, Niels Provos writes "Theo de Raadt, OpenBSD Project leader, is being threatened with legal action if he does not turn over his domain theos.com to the Theos Software Corporation (the proud makers of a new 32-bit OS that can support more than 200 users at the same time!). The said company only needed about three years to find out about it and are so gracious to offer $35 as compensation, so that he can register another domain." Theo de Raadt provides contact information on his website. -
Slashdot Flame Index, January 1999
Pac wrote this story for Segfault Very silly :-) Update: 02/20 01:21 by CT : as usual, segfault segfaults immediately after getting linked. And you thought Slashdot was unstable. And they only get like 3 hits a week. -
2 Scoops of Quickies
Crocodile wrote in to say that x11amp 0.9 alpha2 is out for those of you MP3 junkies out there. Remember that article awhile back about the pictures from Pi? JHoyt sent us a link to a script fu script that will do it. Neato. Infinite background possibilities. Jeff Davis sent us a link to Beowulf Underground, a new news site for those interested in news revolving around Beowulf Linux Clusters. From the random Slashdot Mainstream References box, we've got a bit Stephen Horne sent at ABC News article on the Windows Refunds. Yippee. Now that the boring old serious stuff is out of the way, let's take a break.Ok, that's enough. Now some funny stuff to help end your day on a good note. The Cunctator sent us link that can only be described as the hamster dance. GloiDemon sent us a link to DrZaius.com, a new humor site. How can you resist Dr Zaius? Phil Gregory sent us a link to a Segfaultstory called the Gospel of Tux. Check it out. Rishi Hemrajani sent us a link to a book that everyone should own. I think we posted this a few months ago, but it warrants a rerun.

Adopt a Penguin or help save them
MonkeyPaw writes "Not really related to computers, code or technology, but it has to do with penguins. If you want to spend you money on a penguin yet don't have the space to keep one at your house, the Oregon Zoo has the answer. "The Oregon Zoo Foundation is raising money to rebuild a wall that protects the largest breeding colony of Humboldt penguins in the world." The Oregon Zoo also has a "zoo parent" sponsorship to help pay for the costs of keeping their animals. (penguins included)" MonkeyPaw's website seems to be rather amusing. Do we have a Segfault competitor? -
Humour Quickies
frokost writes "After searching for "Linus Torvalds" on AltaVistas Photo Finder, I ended up with links to several pictures of, well.. Linus Torvalds. I clicked a "Visually Similar"-link, and ended up with this page. It seems like Bill and Linus aren't that different after all ;-) " Someone whose name got lost by my Netscape 4.04 crashing again came across this support incident today. And finally, the denizens of Castle Slashdot are slowly recovering after an angry peasant mob stormed their home by surprise yesterday. -
Linux Press Drinking Game
Sick of seeing Linux press coverage? Need to relax? bAD lOGIN: writes "Segfault.org has a great way to get geared up for that LUG meeting this weekend. Check it out here. " -
Heapin' Helpin' O Slashdot News
Numerous Slashdot tidbits to report today. For those of you who are interested, you can click the following. Hear about the new comments code, read the exciting bugs list, behold the wacky comments about SlashNET, admire my response to Segfault's recent article, and of course, behold the results of my adventures with my new breadmaker. It's been a busy day. Last day of summer vacation. I'm tired, so lets get to work.- Cookie stuff is more-or-less working. The expiration dates are probably wrong, but I'll get to that tomorrow. For now at least Lynx & Netscape are working. I haven't tested IE. Hopefully it works. If not, well, I won't lose much sleep *grin*.
- The User account stuff has been cleaned up. We now can hit a 'User Info' page which will display the total # of comments posted from an account, as well as listing them. Password changing is next. If I get to busy, I'll just add it to the user edit page. It's not super secure, but it'll be ok for a few weeks.
- I went on a code binge early this morning and fixed a ton of niggles throughout the system. Mainly the fixes will allow logging in and posting of comments to be done simultaneously.
- I'm not currently planning on allowing anonymous posters to select alternate names. I might change my mind in a few weeks, but I think if folks will just log in and give it a chance, they'll be fine. It's really no different then before, except your cookie should be smaller because I'm storing your URL/Email/Name here, and not in your cookie :)
- The rumors of my service with the Federation has been greatly exagerated. Contrary to rumours being propogated on evil websites, I did not serve any time aboard the Starship Enterprise. My mother is not named Beverly. And the allegations of my relationship with Lt. Cmdr. Data were greatly exagerated, it was more like a good friendship then a torrid love affair. I was his superior officer and all, it just wouldn't have been appropriate.
- SlashNET had some wackiness. For those of you who know the details, all I'm gonna say is that the GPL is the GPL if its a billion dollar corporation, or a guy in his basement. The DNS is propogating to new IPs, and hopefully by now things are back to normal.
- I bought a breadmaker a while ago. Today it was finally below 140 degrees out for a change so Nate and I broke down and made bread. Loaf 1 was a soggy lump. It resides in a mushy pile in my trashcan (thank god pickup is tomorrow). Loaf 2 didn't seem to want to rise. It looks sorta like cornbread, only its a lot denser. It resides on my counter. I'm afraid to move it for fear of throwing my back out again. Dave hasn't noticed, he's on his 3rd slice. Loaf 3 shall be burnt tomorrow afternoon if I go nutty and get more flour.
- Catch everyone tomorrow. I'm exhausted

Segfault.org Coming Soon
We sure need to laugh a bit these days, and Scott James Remnant has announced that Segfault.org will be opening its doors on monday. They've got a strange little intro page until then that many of you will find quite amusing. I've seen what's behind the curtains and I think everyone will enjoy it immensely. -
Reasons for DOSzilla and JAVAzilla
Garrett LeSage writes "Here's a great writeup on the reasons to support DOS and Java versions of Mozilla. The author makes it pretty clear WHY both ports will be such a great tool for the future." read about it here.
