2 Scoops of Quickies
Crocodile wrote in to say
that x11amp 0.9 alpha2 is
out for those of you MP3 junkies out there.
Remember that article awhile back about the pictures from
Pi? JHoyt sent us a link to a script fu
script
that will do it. Neato. Infinite background possibilities.
Jeff Davis sent us a link
to Beowulf Underground,
a new news site for those interested in news revolving around
Beowulf Linux Clusters.
From the random Slashdot Mainstream References box, we've got
a bit Stephen Horne sent at ABC News article on
the Windows Refunds.
Yippee.
Now that the boring old serious stuff is out of the way, let's
take a break.
Ok, that's enough. Now some funny stuff to help end your day on a good note. The Cunctator sent us link that can only be described as the hamster dance. GloiDemon sent us a link to DrZaius.com, a new humor site. How can you resist Dr Zaius? Phil Gregory sent us a link to a Segfaultstory called the Gospel of Tux. Check it out. Rishi Hemrajani sent us a link to a book that everyone should own. I think we posted this a few months ago, but it warrants a rerun.
I'm currently using freeamp on my p5-100. It takes about 50% of my CPU, though, which means I can't really work with 2 browsers, an email client and gcc at the same time. Is x11amp any more efficient? Is anything?
"I love you Dr Zaius!" -- Troy McClure
Check out some of the other pictures on onastick.net while you're there too. I nearly died laughing at the 'got milk' and the Apple one.
hamsterdance rocks!
DrZaius.com is hilarious!!!
I had the same problem in windows. It was due to the video driver locking up the pci bus. Some place in the winamp documention you can find a web link describing the problem.
I don't have this problem with the 3Dlabs video driver (for my Permedia2) thats new in XFree86 3.3.3.1. (Though there is a "pci_retry" option that I left turned off, which I suspect would cause it to reappear.)
I don't know if the threading "bug" that underreports useage is still present, but on my P210MMX (yeah, it's OCed) Top reports the CPU hovering around 0.3%. X11Amp 0.7 used around 2%, so I'm not certain that either number is correct.
Come on! The stories have no core of truth, (which a good joke should have, methinks).
:)
I mean, "Guns Don't Kill People, Dolphins Do!". Que? What's the fun in that? "Dolphins are _almost_ people"? Yeah, it's _almost_ funny, too!
I'll stick to segfault "Where the elite meet to write".
Warning: I ran the new text-image script as a test, on a fair-sized (but not big) graphic image; it ran for about 4 hours before fucking my system up *real* good (ran out of memory, got booted out of KDE, something happened to some kernel modules and I had to reboot). This is on a 64 Mb system with 128 Mb of available swap.
The script is a good idea but it could use some serious optimizing for speed and memory usage.
mpg123 uses about 30% CPU on a P100. Or at least it did on my P100.
I want that book. And I want it now.
The ABC News article on Windows refunds has a Microsoft Daily News ad at the top. Go figure. Microsoft's buy-advertising-space-on-negative-press strategy strikes again.
God, I can't wait for Mozilla.

Every year during my review, I just pray the words "slashdot.org" aren't mentioned.
Question... does setting x11amp
Thanks in advance.

Slashdot Effect the hamster dance out of existence!
The incomparable Beatkit & Co. will rock your world. Sure, there's otaku level Planet of the Apes action figure info but so much more! Fun with Photoshop, experimental fiction and ???
Did anyone else see an article on Slashdot earlier today that disappeared? It was about wooden computer parts and cases, and Rob made an appalling joke about the mice being something you would "pine" away for.
Anyway, I can't find it and I am curious what happened.
Puff
The got milk picture has got to be one of the funniest pictures I've ever seen.

Since it's actually using mpg123 as its base, I don't think there should be a problem any more. On my PII-400, mpg123 starts off using around 60%, drops to around 20% in less than a second, and eventually gets down to around 5%. Note that I've got a 4MB buffer on it, which is probably the reason for the heavy usage at the beginning.
Oh well, at least it won't be my personal page that has to take the brunt of the slashdot effect
this time around. Nice to see people like it.

That other post asking for the info was from me.
