Stop rewarding jerk carriers
There are lots of re-sellers who provide you with the same networks but don't require crap like this. http://www.pagepluscellular.com/ is what my wife uses.
I've deactivated my phone completely and use it with google voice / voip on wifi for free. http://sipdroid.org/

Re:Android phone please
I would love to use my Bionic, headset, GV and sipdroid over wifi, currently not possible b/c of wifi interference.
It's not only possible, but the link you provided says exactly how to do it.

Re:I Solved A Similar Problem
***Alternate, sane equipment list***
Most any Android phone (1.5 or higher)

Since you asked so nicely: It's working out fine
If you're waiting for hardware manufacturers to give you free upgrades, you're going to be sorely disappointed. That's not their business. They want to sell more hardware. Buy a new phone.
But since Android is free, my T-Mobile Galaxy S Vibrant has been running Froyo since a few days after I bought it. I upgraded to a nice version of Froyo called Nero and I switched from Samsung's sucky, slow filesystem to Linux EXT4. I also installed VOIP software that lets me dial out without using T-Mobile minutes.
Nobody is going to hell, or even to jail, over this.
I had to install some software from the Android market, click a few things, take responsibility for what I was doing, download the new version, and reboot.

What's a good SIP client?

Re:When will it be on phones?
For Android, IMHO better options already exist.
Get Sipdroid + any SIP provider like CallWithUs, justvoip (+ IPKall as DID) etc.
Look Ma, calls over 3G to many countries for free or cheaper than big-brother-Google. -
Any Android...
...preferably rooted (HTC G1/Dream is fine), plus Sipdroid.

Re:Subsidy lock?
SIP for Android No custom ROM required, AFAIK.

Re:great, so my phone can be even slower
... Thanks to my choice (VoIP + WiFi on my "smart" linux enabled (maemo) hand set) my total cost of ownership (TCO) is less than $100 per year.
... $24 per year for SkhypeIn (with SkhypePro) + $3.00 per month for unlimited calling...Huh, if all you need is calling while next to a WiFi hotspot, "less than $100/y" remains way overpriced IMHO.
I use VoIP from my cellphone for maybe $10 to $20/y with SIPdroid + IPkall DID + JustVoip (or others) + optional: Asterisk, SIPBroker and E164. But all this is mostly irrelevant as my reason for having a cell is to call from places other than home or work = often without WiFi.Back on topic: VMware stuff is IMO like that VoIP/WiFi stuff: sure cool, appealing to geeks. Good for PR / publicity. But otherwise limited practical usefulness, esp for non-techies...

APD1 vs G1, vs iPhone- not tied to Tmobile, Apple
G1s aren't exactly hard to unlock, especially when one variant happens to be like that out of the box (yes, the Android dev phone 1 or ADP1). Well worth the extra $25 "Google tax" IMHO. Plus I've had a chance to try 1.5/cupcake >2 weeks before most G1 users, and I like it.
I use my ADP1 with AT&T. Yup, no 3G for me (yet?) because US carriers somehow manage to always pick their very own frequencies (wtf?!? 1700 MHz band aka AWS for T-Mobile, some 1900 flavor for AT&T even though they have a 1700/AWS license as well, and whereas the rest of the world agreed on 2100 long ago).
Anyway, I have 3 lines on a $50 +2 x $10 family plan = $23/line, or ~$26 with taxes etc... Unlimited data adds $15/mo.
Yes I'll need about 6 months to recoup the extra cost of this phone ($424) vs an iPhone with typical voice+data plan ($199 + $78-ish/mo) -- not taking into account the pennies I can save on apps (e.g. free SSH client) and on calls using VoIP/SIP.
Speaking of which, check out http://www.sipdroid.org/; it's definitely still buggy but works over 2.5G. Cupcake and open-source in general rock.
