Re:So what?
If you have google+ app installed they do.
Fortunately they upload them to NSA facilities so your taxes pay for their storage if your videos are less than 15 minutes: http://socialtimes.com/picasa-considers-google-users-special-instant-upload-photos-videos-do-not-count-against-1gb-free-storage-limit_b69159 -

Re:Time to move.
Interesting comment, it inspired me to see what is available I found redphone for android but it doesn't exist any more.
seems twitter bought the company and then shut it down. I don't really have anything to hide but so what, why shouldn't I do so anyway because I can. Actually I can't and it seems that is no accident.
Redphone it appears was effective but it seems only effective until the plug got pulled. It should be relatively simple to digitise and encrypt an audio signal and decrypt at the other side without needing a third party to enable this to work. Even Pgp should be an option but that is owned by symantic now. Its an enterprise solution now
...There should be good free alternatives but I haven't found them yet.

Re:Benefits and drawbacks
I do use Ubuntu at home so I'm aware of the apps available, which are mostly the same as Debian, and about 30,000 in total: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian#cite_note-14
However there are now over 100,000 iPad apps (see http://socialtimes.com/iphone-ipad-available-app-count-around-400000-now_b65291 ) - some of them will be junk, but judging by what's on the iPhone there are many useful apps, games and other content (videos, magazines, newspapers) that aren't on Debian/Ubuntu.
It all depends what you consider useful of course - if you want scripting, software development, servers, and an open desktop, Debian is more useful. If you want games, productivity apps, multimedia, etc, an iPad is more useful.

Re:Stop whining
Forcing what functionality? Giving visitors full control of what displays on their profile page? Allowing them to pick what is important? Allowing them to make posts for past events to fill in missing information?
Which of these will your friends not want? What level of detail are you referring to? There is no detail in the timeline that you cannot find already. It is just a matter of allowing users to weight their items.
How does the timeline not fit into the "connect and chat, and share pictures". Also, where did you get your statistics that this is the only thing 99% of members want. Did you forget this? http://socialtimes.com/facebook-gamers-hours-per-month_b24156

Neither is hands-free calling
The hands-free issue is moot:

http://www.iol.co.za/motoring/industry-news/hands-free-phoning-just-as-dangerous-1.1096622Seems it was published everywhere except mainstream US media, which strongly indicates that it's true but contrary to corporate interests. I guess more accidents translates to more car sales. Ideally cars should be as safe as possible for the driver and passengers, but difficult to drive (i.e. small windows, confusing/distracting features, controls, and meters), and most importantly more likely to be written off from even minor collisions. Sounds about right. Too bad about the bad wrecks that kill people, but hey, business is business.

Re:Facebook is pretty much an abusive platform
and I don't think Facebook is so central to the industry that anyone cares if they fall.
That's laughable.
Facebook is social gaming right now. There is at least one multi-billion dollar company created just from Facebook games (Zynga) who reaches something like 50 million social gamers per day. There are other multi-billion dollar companies who've recently entered the social gaming industry (Electronic Arts [EA], and Disney come to mind) and are trying to get a share of this enormous market.
As much as we (slashdot crowd) probably don't like Facebook, the fact remains that it is quite central to most anything relating to 'social' on the internet. Seriously, what else is there that has anything to do with what Facebook's doing that people are using in mass? I outlined a little bit about the insanely profitable social gaming arena that has used Facebook's massive user base to spread like wildfire. Where else can people play these sorts of games with all of their friends? People really enjoy the social aspect of Facebook. In fact, according to a study of ~7,800 Thai students, their primary reason to use Facebook was to relieve stress. (source)
To be honest, I'm not sure why I took the time to respond to this. I think the tech geek type tend to dismiss Facebook because it's not something that we're really into. The facts, however, show that Facebook is quite central to tens (perhaps hundreds) of millions of people's "internet lives", for lack of a better term. Think about this: Facebook has over 9 times the page views of youtube.com, the second most popular website in the world. (source)

Re:Google Me
Umm, you do know who they're working with right? Zynga, the other Facebook company that doesn't care about users.
That's just bullshit.
Zynga has worked diligently to improve it's customer service. If you're referencing the "scamville" situation that was reported by TechCrunch last year, I'd suggest you read the follow-up articles also posted by TechCrunch praising the approach that Zynga took in completely removing those offers from all games until they were able to gain better control. In fact, one of those offer companies is likely to go out of business soon because they recently lost out on a facebook bid to be the lone offer provider of facebook credits. (see link here)
Zynga certainly hasn't been a perfect company in terms of user relations, but they have been one of the very few who have publicly acknowledged their problems and worked to get them corrected.
