Re:Good for France.
It doesn't matter if the user is in France. What should matter is if the site is located in France.
You don't realy get this "internet" thing, do you. What matters is not where "the site is located" (whatever that means). What matters is where the company is doing business. Facebook does business in France, French law applies.

Re:how about other third-party tracking?
They can levy all the fines they want, but unless Facebook exists as an entity inside of that country, does that country really have any jurisdiction?

Re:Only Fair
Just because Twitter has a presence in France doesn't mean France has the ability to enforce its laws on a company that's American owned - whether those French laws are fair or not don't play a role here - it's a matter of who is ruling and who isn't - http://www.societe.com/societe/twitter-france-sas-789305596.html

Re:I've been waiting for this...
...Twitter France (if it exists)...
It does. See: http://www.societe.com/societe/twitter-france-sas-789305596.html but all that is irrelevant. We're talking American interests versus other interests. Juridication and moral issues don't play a role here. It's about who can impose his views and who can't.
-
Why?
Because Twitter is registered in France, thus they are liable (or at least Twitter France SAS is). http://www.societe.com/societe/twitter-france-sas-789305596.html [In french, registration numbers are the RCS and the SIRET]

Re:is it real
And it's on: famous french blogger Maitre Eolas relayed the news much earlier this morning (does the guy even sleep ?), which then was picked up by L'Express (national newspaper) half an hour ago. It will be all over french social networks for the next couple days. Apparently the restaurant is not owned by McDonald's, it is a franchise owned by the limited-liability society Elyrest.

Re:FrSIRT's Post! This company is just nothing.
From their contact page [in french] http://www.frsirt.com/contact.php they tell they are FrSIRT / A.D.CONSULTING
And from a good company registry website http://www.societe.com/cgi-bin/recherche?rncs=4785 02123
you get that :[in french too, sorry]

It's the same adress, so FrSIRT, AD consulting and K-otik security is just one company. It seem to have been created in semptember 2004 with 10k euros.
The guy took 8 month to steal someone's security report and post it to get publicity.
Good job ! now get ready for the stock options -
Re:After the design document comes
there are tools to automatically generate large amounts of code just from simple UML diagrams
To take it one step further, if you can design a complete model, there are tools that can implement that model (for example, in C)... -

Now this company Novinit actually is a registered company (as a "société anonyme"), headed by a guy called Arnaud de la Fouchardière (quite a number of hits through Google). The funds (capital social) of the company is 1.439.867,88 .
Novinit was apparently incorporated in may 1999.
So if it's a hoax, it doesn't seem to be organized from a random cellar but rather comes from a traceable corporation (data grabbed from here).
So it *might* be legit. -
Re:it's a hoax
Novinit is not a registered company name in France.
So? http://www.societe.com/cgi-bin/recherche?rncs=4228 99021&vu=1. Better get your facts straight next time before making such false statements. You know, that a company can hold you liable for such defamatory nonsense? -
Private copy of MUSIC is LEGAL in France
(IANA French L, but I play one on Slashdot)
According to the French legislation,
Article L. 122-5 from the Intellectual Property Code (in French, sorry)
in 2nd alinea it is said that you can copy non-software intellectual property for the private use of the copist.
(and it's the same text that allows fair use, in alinea 3.)
about twenty years ago (when audio tape appeared), the definition of "the copist" was refined to be "the owner of the copying apparatus".
For instance, you can copy CD albums to run them in your car CD player, as long as you still own the CD burner.
a few years ago, when CD burners were REALLY expensive, "CD copy center" shops appeared, where you brought your cd to copy, they selled you the balnk CD, and copied it for a fee. it was a fringe case of private copy, and the finally were shut down...
and to answer to another post, it won't be a govnernment office who will administrate the tax, it'a a small company (which already gets the taxes from analogic blank media) the SORECOP
it's due to get about 700 M FF(106 M Euro) in 2001 woth of taxes and it's been obfuscating (sp?) its accounting data since 1996.
there's a article (in French) on this here :
