Even the left are getting scared!
" Which approach do you think produces the better results?
I happen to think the best approach is a balance somewhere in the middle, but as business practices seem to get more and more invasive, I find myself leaning closer to the European approach, even though I'm normally quite wary of regulation."

Even the left wing are getting scared because of unfair business practices. The real answer is in re-writing the Email protocol. It is simply too lax on security and too simple to accomodate todays needs and provide the level of 'security' people want with the Internet.
I propose that a working group be formed to incorporate the same type of Authentication we know works with email - and piggy back that authentication on an open platform like RFC 822's Email Protocol until it can be implemented as a required medium.
Any interested contributors to this working group should email us at inquiries@solidblue.biz. SolidBlue is a leader in networked communications and protocol development.

SolidBlue Software Inc.
That's so strange this story appeared right after solidblue software released their 'slide rule' program as a joke.
You should check out their site, the slide ruler software is funny (if you're a total nerd) ; their page talks about how, "Strangely as we've evolved from the abicus, [...] eventually the slide ruler, and finally the computer -- we see model abicus's in peoples houses and offices, and computers are everywhere -- yet the slide-ruler seems to have lost some fame. We feel it needs to be brought back, and what better medium than through the computer."
... it's really funny, I'm not doing it justice.
sorry,

Wow!
Wow, this will be the first big partnership between IBM and Germany since they helped the Nazi party record and sort all non-aryans, cripples and homosexuals for segregation, internment and slaughter.
Bet you don't see that on their home page.

My company and the last place I worked
The last place I worked was a dying publicly owned company on the Canadian Stock Exchange. As one of 3 IT guys in this software company of 100 high-high-maintenance clients, I spent a lot of time monitoring my fellow employees for news of the companies impending doom.
I discovered that the 'promised-management-positions' crowd was keeping close tabs on their fellow employees as well. Monitoring exactly how long each of us worked, took breaks for, (and of course) never mentioning the major overtime we put in.
It's funny, because between them monitoring us and talking all day with numerous online boyfriends - the management hardly did any work. We on the other hand managed to keep 100 clients happy, fix the "Interactive Unix" network so that it didn't die each and every day, *and* format all of their MSN chat logs for easy reading off a floppy disk when the inevitable day came that we would quit.
and man, those chat logs were good!
Once we left, we started our own Software Company and are almost ready to release software exactly for companies like that. Network Security & Productivity monitoring software. I wish we had a package like this when we were there, but don't get me wrong - NGREP worked pretty well too.
