The real reason for the new, higher comment IDs
It makes deleting comments easier. In old times, if there had been a story without a #1 comment, or even #2 or #3, it would have been obvious something was deleted. With the new system, it will be much easier for people like michael to delete what they don't like without anybody noticing.

Re:Err...'You have to wonder what is on Michael's mind tonight with him posting stories about "overwhelmingly large" telescopes and "tech wars in meat space..."'
Afterall, why should he waste his time time posting pointless stories to Slashdot when he could be releasing the Censorware domain to it's rightful owners?
I hope you're reading this, Michael! -

Methinks Michael my just be trying to make up stupid reasonings. Yes, there are many things to think about in this idea that other people brought up (who and how would this be regulated by being one), but Michael's complaint is just stupid.

Re:Quotation
You've done Mr. Finkelstein a great disservice by quoting him out of context. The bit about "underscoring the important role lawyers can play in society" is a quote from a lawyer's web site. Mr. Finkelstein's article makes it clear that he disagrees with that interpretation. The title, and point of the article is "'The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers' - it's a lawyer joke" It's a good article, and I encourage everyone to read it.

Re:There goes my karmaEvidently it was before.
If you go to www.censorware.org you'll see what Michael has to say about the incident. After reading this "news" story I would tend to believe Seth's version. There is no real evidence to support Michael's claims for this article. Others have pointed out that the client application does allow you to choose what projects your CPU cycles go towards. If he had any proof that the software did otherwise he should have stated that evidence.

Re:FiguresWhat a typical
/. immature, mypoic, pig-headed response.Well, we are talking about Michael Sims here. He has a history of obnoxious, petty immature behavior.

I love slashdotWhy I love slashdot.
The best part of slashdot is the hypocrisy. Slashdot has a definite "do as I say, not as I do" policy.
Example 1: Censorship
Slashdot claims to be anti-censorship. They make prominent figures in the anti-censorware movement authors. I'm talking about Michael Sims and Jamie. They claim to promote free speech. But do they really?
I'm not going to bore you with tales of the dreaded bitchslap.
Here's an article you might find interesting. It's about Michaels real position on censorware.
Also, here's a charming article.
Example 2: Auctions
Taco and Hemos find the idea of auctioning virtual property to be interesting. Here's a story by Hemos, and here's one by taco.
But what happens when someone tries to auction a slashdot account? Here's a snippet from an IRC log:
[22:25:58] [Questions] JustSomeGuy asks: How do you feel about the recent sale of user accounts on ebay?
[22:26:06] [CmdrTaco] should we fess up?
[22:26:11] [CmdrTaco] we fucked with the first guys karma.
[22:26:14] [CmdrTaco] it was funny as hell.
[22:26:28] [CmdrTaco] we wrote a script to give him random karma from 0.. number of seconds until ebay auction ends.
[22:26:35] [CmdrTaco] so he had 0 karma when the sale ended.
[22:26:41] [CmdrTaco] he updated his account to cry.
[22:26:44] [CmdrTaco] it was so funny.
What's this? Taco writing a script just to fuck with a user? Say it isn't so.
You can view the complete IRC log here.
Oddly enough, this never gets mentioned in any story on virtual property auctions.
Why is that?
Example 3: Community
Slashdot is a community oriented website. They win webbys for this. It's the community that helped Taco and Hemos to a big pile of VA Linux stock.
But they don't really give a fuck about the community.
Here's a quote from an email Taco sent to Shoeboy:
> Anyway, to go back to my original point, I think a fair
> number of readers are interested in who the trolls are
> and why they post what they do.
That may be, but I don't care. I post Slashdot stories that *I* want to read.
You can get the whole email thread here.
(Shoeboy kicks Taco's ass hardcore)
Want more? How about the theft of user accounts?
Famous slashdot poster Signal 11 grew tired of this site. So he gave away his account. Dear beloved free speech advocate Michael discovered this and used his authorial privileges to steal the account. No warning was given. No explanation either. The account was simply stolen and that was that.
These are all reasons I love this site. If I wanted a site that wasn't run by assholes, I'd read kuro5hin.
NOTE: this post is entirely factual. If you have any doubts about the veracity of these claims, feel free to contact Taco.
Cheers,
~Axel~

Read your employment agreement CAREFULLYThe first thing you must do is to read your employment contract very carefully. Pay particular attention to the "Inventions" clause. I cannot stress this enough.
Very often, you will have signed away all intellectual rights to inventions which could be useful to your employer if developed on company time.
I say: DO NOT TOUCH THIS CLIENT PROJECT. DO NOT. The potential legal entanglement is frightening.
Do not hear about it, do not get mail about it, don't share a pizza with the people working on it.
If you're about to be finished yourself, and you say you are just about one work-week from completion, take a two-week vacation and get it done. Surely that's not too much to do for your long-term project.

"entertainment center for the dolphins"???
The underwater touchscreen is the first of its kind. It's made up of an infrared beam grid mounted onto the tank window and a monitor screen that faces the dolphins.
Remember the web-browser for the birds, literally, from the Slashdot story: The Internet For Parrots ? Now we have a touchscreen entertainment center for the dolphins. ..."The touchscreen is a kind of entertainment center for the dolphins,"
...Things are getting out of hand. What's next? Using computer-controlled motors on arctic ice-blocks so penguins can play Tetris?

Re:The Sony Decision Doesn't Apply Because....Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer.
More seriously, for the pragmatic reason that the decision SONY CORP. v. UNIVERSAL CITY STUDIOS, INC doesn't apply, I think it has more to do with:
The District Court concluded that noncommercial home use recording of material broadcast over the public airwaves was a fair use of copyrighted works and did not constitute copyright infringement. It emphasized the fact that the material was broadcast free to the public at large, the noncommercial character of the use, and the private character of the activity conducted entirely within the home. Moreover, the court found that the purpose of this use served the public interest in increasing access to television programming, an interest that "is consistent with the First Amendment policy of providing the fullest possible access to information through the public airwaves.
... Even when an entire copyrighted work was recorded, [464 U.S. 417, 426] the District Court regarded the copying as fair use "because there is no accompanying reduction in the market for `plaintiff's original work.'"Honestly, the same can't easily be said about Napster-based exchanges.

Appeals Court decision against NapsterDisclaimer: I'm not a lawyer.
It's important to read The Appeals Court decision on Napster
This decision discusses Napster and contributory and vicarious copyright infringement. A key part:
We observe that Napster's actual, specific knowledge of direct infringement renders Sony's holding of limited assistance to Napster. We are compelled to make a clear distinction between the architecture of the Napster system and Napster's conduct in relation to the operational capacity of the system.

Re:trap them
There is a piece on censorware.org that talks about some political campain sites being blocked
That was in fact Blind Ballots by peacefire.orgAnd you won't find any censorware reports on censorware.org these days. Michael Sims (yes, that Michael Sims, Slashdot YRO editor) shut-down the censorware.org site, in a failed coup d'etat to control Censorware Project. Some of the material is now on a different site, censorware.NET.
The history is given in my essay below. Michael Sims has taken to abusing his Slashdot editorial position, to downgrade my postings whenever I mention what he did. Maybe this'll slip through. It's worth burning the karma over it.
Note censorware.NET would also like Michael Sims to stop confusing people over the domain names. No luck so far.

Re:Remove the ancient laws, or at least update'em.
Patents are so that I, who invent stuff, can secure the economic security for my offspring, and their offspring and so on.
Don't get me started on this. Your offspring should start out the same way as everybody else. It makes me puke, when rich people, who has been rich for generations, goes ahead and brings the fortune to the nextgen, and the nextgen, and so forth.
Everybody should have to earn their riches. Some people WILL of course gain something by their parrents being rich - but it should not be the standard. I would recomend reading the October edition of The Ethical Spectacle for a more elaborate view on this.
Natrual? Yes! Just like trying to leech of others, they way you want it.
I do not want to "leech of others" - I want to be able to use already publicated ways of doing things. If I know how to make a certain algorithm, I should be able to use it in my software - no matter who has "patented" it. If I know how to make a cool mousetrap, I should be able to make it - and produce it - without having to vade through the thousands of patented ways of killing a mouse in a trap.
I don't *care* if someone invented it before me. I want to be able to reinvent, and use the things I reinvent, without having to wait for some stupid patent to expire.

Re:this is turning into WTO all over again.
They weren't riots in Seattle, unless you mean it was the police who were rioting. Of course, the police then provoked riots, but hey, let's blame that on the protesters too
The point about the Starbucks windows was that the response was over the top, and that the property damage wasn't that significant. You are correct about the media coverage and the general public response, although I'm not sure you're really focusing on the clear connection between those two things. If the media only covers the window-breaking, how are the general public even supposed to know about the other stuff? The answer, unfortunately, is: they're not supposed to know.
You're probably very correct about LAers being tired of violent protest. However, a few things: not all property damage is equal; broken windows do not equal mass arson. Out-of-control mobs are apparently very much in the eye of the beholder... there weren't too many 'out-of-control mobs in Seatlle, unless you count the ones fleeing being teargassed for peaceful assembly. Also, it's not that difficult to create an 'out-of-control mob' using police violence. I don't think it would be too easy to stand calmly while getting tear-gassed, pepper-sprayed, beaten, and charged at.
Lastly, a key point arising from all of this is the concerted effort by the police (and the media) to make the protesters appear a lot more violent than they are. That's a big reason why the puppet-making factory got shut down: colorful, playful puppets and similar props give the whole thing a carnival atmosphere and reinforce the message that the protests are non-violent. The police are well aware of this, and of their need to portray the protesters as (essentailly) 'terrorists', so that's why the puppet-making area was a target.
Oh, and here's a quick rant. To anyone who believes all the bullshit about the 'dangerous weapons' found in the factory: are you out of your minds? Giant slingshots? Poisonous spiders? What? This is America! If the protesters were truly interested in violence, they would have guns! And they wouldn't store their armory in one highly-publicized, very open-access space! The police will use anything as a justification, and there is a pattern here: in the DC protests, the puppet-making space was shut down and they found 'weapons' there too: prominently a single 'Molotov cocktail' that later turned out to be a plastic bottle with paint-stripper in it (fairly obviously necessary since they paint the puppets). But no, you can all just go on believing that these people are ingenious and insane violent types who want nothing more than to be able to blow up police cars with venomous spider-filled gas/paintstripper bombs fired from giant slingshots and/or juggling equipment.
Unbelievable. Oh, and hey, I guess you all believe there really was a sniper at Kent State that day (here's a sample link from google if you don't know what I'm talking about:link). I hope you never encounter a dishonest cop, a bent judge, a twisted justice system, a biased media oulet, or political repression. That's not sarcasm, either; I really mean it.
