Re:Yeah but.... 1/4 the price alternative
Well the same holds true of lower end vehicles so I wouldn't be surprised. I remember an article (I think MOTOR or DRIVER magazine) between a Porsche GT2 and litre superbike, with the result of the $18k bike being very even with the $200k Porsche. Of course, your life expectancy on the bike is slightly lower... another similar article here.
Then again they have different target markets. The guy on the bike got to demonstrate his incredible ballsiness, whereas the guy in the Porsche put some tunes on the stereo, flipped on the aircon and went to pick up his girlfriend. :) -
171?
171 mph top speed jumps out at me as very uncompetitive at Le Mans. The Circuit de la Sarthe is a long track with a lot of straights, especially the Mulsanne Straight. Last year, the cars in the GT2 class which I assume this will compete in (the slowest class) topped out at 182-186mph for the most part. A warning between the lines"It turns by putting a silicon 'foot' out and pivoting like a motorcyclist skidding around a tight turn"
Whatever you do, don't try to overclock these babies, not even with watercooling.

Re:A lot of people don't understand this, but...
"I have had people who work in TV tell me that nobody tries to alienate any viewers, but I think it is more than clear that G4 wants TechTV viewers out and replace them with an MTV crowd."
You should read through the General Discussion boards over at Speed TV and hear what the viewers think about all the NASCAR that management of this FOX owned motor sports channel is pushing down their throats.
A recent poll on the boards shows over 80 percent of people who bothered to vote think there's way too much NASCAR being shown on the channel, yet management pulls a news show that covered all motor sports and is replacing it with a show called Nascar Nation!
Needless to say, the F1, WRC, Dakar Rally Etc Etc people are getting angry about this, but management continue to trot out the "it's America's favorite motorsport" and "but the ratings say people want more NASCAR".
It's the usual self fulfilling prophecy syndrome I'm afraid, like radio station playing Britney Spears over and over again until the kids forget there's anything else out there.
It wouldn't be so bad but NASCAR is soooo boring. -
Re:Top Gear
Look on Suprnova for torrents of the Top Gear episodes, regulary uploaded.
I did, but Suprnova is for-pay. While there's nothing wrong with that (though it does seem a bit suspect, since they appear to offer more than just videos of TV shows, such as games and other apps. $29.95 for a lifetime subscription to warez?), I'm not going to pay for that. I checked out UKNova from another poster, which is free, and they have a few torrents to recent Top Gear episodes. It'd be nice to have access to the Top Gear archives, but if I'm going to pay for that I'd rather pay BBC directly (because I'm sure Suprnova doesn't pay BBC).
Maybe BBC America will eventually wise up and bring over Top Gear, too. It doesn't matter that they review a number of cars that will never be available in the US (the show Fifth Gear does that as well, yet Speed TV carries the program). The reviews are highly entertaining (so much better than anything we get here from shows like Autoweek and such), and they actually run many of the cars on a race track and compare times against others they've reviewed.
