Re:There's an obvious reason
It's a LOT smaller segment than you think. Your own predjudices show it. For example, my alma mater, Seattle Pacific University, is quite conservative. It's part-and-parcel of the Free Methodist church. It has a great electrical engineering program (very applied science based), biology (which teaches evolution as the leading theory - which is correct), and lots of other great science programs.
I posit you're just using your own prejudices and beliefs to condemn that which you think is wrong - with no real experience. Too bad so many on the Left require group-think and cannot stand or tolerate open debate and voicing of different opinions - you might learn something!

Re:That sucks
Well, it is a Christian school after all... I remember that when I visited my female friend at Seattle Pacific University, they post a male "guard" at the door during your visit to the female dorm room, with the door opened. The bed was placed strategically (about a foot) underneath a bookcase that was nailed to the wall, so that only one person can realistically sleep on the bed comfortably. And this was just about 10 years ago.

why [ink|laser]jet when you can crayon?
My school got a pair of Phaser 840s for free under some stress-test program for the main lab. All we had to do was provide the paper, and call the service guys when it broke (which it did only once in my four years there).
Seeing that this model has been discontinued, you may want to check out the $300 savings on the Phaser 8200.

Re:Finally
Leonard Nemoy's album... Nothing beat's hearing ol' spock ripping out "Proud Mary"...
I think Spock singing the Bilbo Baggins song is much better than "Proud Mary"...

a true story about letters to the editor...
Back a few years ago while I was in college, a friend and I ran a little humor club of sorts... Our "publications" were few, but we thought they were pretty quality...
Anyway, in the parody that we made of our school's website, we encouraged people to use Scott Pakin's automatic complaint-letter generator to generate letters to submit to our school paper as letters to the editor. As it turns out, I was reading said paper a few months later, and came across a very familiar writing style... We got quite a kick out of it.

Re:Why, oh why is this?
Some schools, mine included, have a great deal with MS. Campus Licensing.
Office XP? $10 - three CD's and a license.
Windows XP Pro? $10 - CD and license.
Visual Studio? - Go the library and borrow all 9 CDs, install it, and return to library.
My school is Seattle Pacific, for those that wonder. -
