Re:The Problem With Mail, IMO
The letters have to be sorted anyway, so just add in a step of the process to have someone calculate the charge for me and bill me. Come to think of it, why hasn't this been done yet?

Find the nearest drop point (which are getting scarcer, judging by this article)
Surely there's a blue box in close proximity? I have an old fashioned mailbox because I live in the country but even still there's at least 3 blue boxes in a 1 mile radius. -
Re:QSL Card
Riiight. And just where is Voyager 1 going to get stamps?
It could try here.
I'm not sure if they'll print out of a bulky dot-matrix printer, though.
And mail pickup is gonna be a problem..... -
This is just CafePress, right?
Sure, it's a good idea. And I really don't mind there being more competition in the market, but isn't CafePress already doing this with all sorts of apparel and other easily printable goods? In addition, isn't Stamps.com already doing this with stamps. And aren't there a number of sites that do this with photographs?
Yeah, printing customized materials cheaply is a great service... and combining the best features of all the currently available sites can only benefit us as a whole, but it's not unique and I'd be surprised if it were a big success. -

The future was here and it already passed you by.

Re:"Certified" does not mean "Signed"From Stamps.com:
With Stamps.com, you can pay for US Postal Service special services, including Certified Mail. Certified Mail requires the mail carrier to obtain a signature from the recipient of your package or flat. The recipient's signature is kept at the receiving Post Office and provides you with proof of delivery.
Care to take the $100 challenge? -
What problem is this supposed to solve?None of the articles indicate what problem this is supposed to solve.
From the problems we're having now, it might be necessary to prohibit anonymous paper mail. This is quite possible. All mail would bear digitally signed stamps, bar-coded stamps., which are available right now and are accepted by the USPS. ("Stamps from your printer!") Retail outlets that sold stamps would have to authenticate buyers, perhaps using Ellison's new ID card.

Yes, please moderate it up!!You can verify the claims made at the requirements page of Stamps.com ; If you want to print stamps, you need Windows; Linux and other OSes need not apply.
Of course they still use Apache to serve their pages...

(I'd moderate it up myself, but I've already posted in this thread).
