    You can read Lockard's essay, or some earlier permutation of it, for yourself.

    Lockard addresses several ideals about online communities. Some of these pertain to whether the Internet will be the Great Leveler, producing a classless, commonly-owned, universally accessible forum for communication. Lockard says this is false.

    Fair enough. The Internet is not free. Getting connected requires owning or accessing a certain amount of equipment, having a certain amount of free time to spend online rather than working, a certain level of technical skill, and basic literacy. The same could be said for living in Wellesly, Andover, Concord, or any of the other upscale physical communities surrounding Boston. The median household yearly income in Massachusetts is about $29K; the average asessed tax value of houses in Concord is around $394K. This is not inclusive. I wouldn't call them diverse communities, either.

    "Cybericity does not replicate material communities in a parallel world where we can reformulate communality." I also agree with this. I don't use the Internet to get closer to my physical community. I use it to get information about it. For instance:


    The Internet does as much for physical community building as the phone book: I go there to find information, which might lead me to go out in my neighborhood. It doesn't create social relationships by itself. I have to go interact.

    Why should online communities mirror geographical ones? Yes, it's important to participate in my geographic community, and it would be swell if folks used the Internet to strengthen participation. This isn't the benchmark for whether something constitutes a community.

    Community is a social process. Lockard is correct that it is more than a mere "electronic affinity group". There are websites I check frequently, like Slashdot or the Boston Globe, and then there are communities I belong to. The distinction is whether one treats the site as a source of information or as a group of people whose input you want.

    For instance, I've run a mailing list for women martial artists for about four years. Some posts are for information, like "how do I train after knee surgery", and are posted because someone out there has that information. Others are for feedback ("I'm facing this situation, what's your take on it") or just social ("wish me luck on my belt test"), because the poster wants to talk about it with her peers. That transformation from information source to peer is what makes it a community.

    So, in summary, Lockard is right that the Internet is not a panacea to the inequities we see in society, nor is it revitalizing involvement in our neighborhoods, though it does contain some elements of that. He is incorrect that a community requires a physical presence.

    On a tangent, I've been pondering over what conditions foster community. Some factors are:
    • Participants building up individual identities. You know who you're talking to.
    • High signal to noise ratio.
    • A magic number of posts -- too many drives people away; too few is just an announcement list.
    • Enough of a focus that you have something to talk about. I've seen very general lists, like "This is a list for the town of X" on eGroups, that fizzle out for lack of something to say.
    • A few alpha-posters that invest time into high-quality posts.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Remember, in the U.S., the popular vote is irrelevant. The electoral college is all that matters. So, even though Clinton got only 43%, of the popular vote, he recieved the votes from a majority of the country's electoral college.

    A canidtate does have to get a majority of the electoral college votes to be elected. If not, the House gets to determine the winner. So, a run-off would be required if 1/3 of the states in the US voted for one canidate, 1/3 for another, and the rest voted for another canidate.

National Recycling Coalition EPA and the Display Industry State of Massachusetts CRT Recycling Right now, it is the consumer's responsability to dispose of these electronics following national & local regulations. In the future, it will be the electronics manaufacturers' responsability.

    ...and if you, Gentle Reader, picked up a CueCat in Massachusetts, please email me, and maybe we can take this issue to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. Either Digital Convergence or Radio Shack is in some kind of doo-doo here, because...
    • I picked up a CueCat from a Radio Shack in Boston on Friday. My wife picked one up today. Nobody told us anything about being bound by any license agreement. If Digital Convergence really cared about protecting their IP in the hardware, they should have required Radio Shack to warn people of the licensing terms when they picked up the device -- especially after this whole thing broke on Friday. (If the EFF takes this case and wants people to give depositions, we're available.)
    • The catalog that Radio Shack gave me with the CueCat says, on the back cover, "come by a Radio Shack store and get your free :CAT scanning device", and on page 3, "You can pick up your :Cue:C.A.T. device FREE at any of over 7,000 participating RadioShack stores nationwide." (Boldface added.) Seems like Digital Convergence Legal needs to have a word with Radio Shack Marketing.
    • The sleeve with the CD-ROM does say "Opening this software constitutes acceptance of our License terms contained herein." However, I haven't opened the software, and there's nothing there about using the hardware constituting acceptance of the license.

    Speeding is NOT a crime, UNLESS you went to the government asking for permission (DRIVER'S LICENSE) to use their property (REGISTERED VEHICLE.) If you don't want to be harassed by the good law officers, you can get an International Driver's Permit, which is valid in over 200 countries. No Socialist Slave Number is required.

    Criminal Courts involve the State (one of the 50, or the United States) vs. an individual. There is a prosecutor and a defendant.

    Criminal courts can also involve Commonwealths, of which there are 4, not just States (46). For instance, if you were in Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, or Virginia, your case would be known as Commonwealth of KY/MA/PA/VA v. Joe Schmoe. Everywhere else, it's The People of the State of California v. John Doe.

    One example of the status of Commonwealth for these four states was one famous case in the 1920s: Commonwealth of Massachusetts v. Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti.

    I know it's nitpicky, but I just felt like pointing that out.

    Some state governments, particularly Massachusetts, are making an effort to bring more and more transactions online. For example, take a look at the Registry of Motor Vehicles home page. You can change registration information, get replacement licenses issued, and even pay your tickets online. And let's not forget that many states, and even Uncle Sam himself, are allowing people to file and pay their taxes electronically.

    I don't know what really happened here, but, it is a serious miscalculation on the part of the people from MassLinux to try to head off customer complaints this way. They are only hurting themselves by going out on to places like LinuxToday and Slashdot, and telling such an unbelievable story.

    I am not a Masslinux customer, but if I were, this is what I would do:

    1) If I were a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, I would contact the Department of Telecommunication and Energy. Calling them on the phone at (800) 392-6066, their complaint line, is probably the best approach. My question would be whether they are the correct place to launch an investigation at the state level.

    2) I would call my (Massachusetts) assemblyman and ask for assistance. This will probably require a letter sent by US Mail documenting the loss of service and the lack of business-to-customer communication.

    3) Regardless of where I lived and worked, I would contact the Federal Communications Commission and ask which federal agency ought to be involved in an investigation. I would go to the Federal Government because they have some jurisdiction over anyone participating in interstate commerce.

    No one should accept heresay and innuendo. These people represented themselves as a business and they took payment from customers for services. Masslinux customers have a right to a complete and thorough explanation, including a determination of ultimate responsibility for the disruption.

    Anyone who accepts less because there is no recourse in the "New Ecomomy" doesn't understand their rights as American citizens.

    I wish I didn't feel this way, but part of me thinks that the community should stop meaningless political actions like boycotting Amazon.com and start using its passion and determination to get to the bottom of this incredible situation.

Looking around the website, I couldn't find an official explanation (though I'm sure it's there somewhere), but I did find out that our legislators have nothing better to do than create an official State Ceremonial March. If I remember my high school history classes correctly, there's no difference between a commonwealth and a state, someone it just thought it sounded funkier some 200+ yrs ago.

    I also live in Massachusetts and although the default is to have them use your SSN you can request that they assign you another number. Check out the application form at http://www.state.ma.us/rmv/forms/20142.pdf

    It says right near the top: "Do you want a random state assigned number for your license number (instead of your social security number)?"

    This application is for both the driving test, and out of state conversions, so you should have had this option when you moved here. I know the option has been there at least since I moved here in August of '95.
