Obesity
2/3 of Americans are either overweight or obese.
That has Severe health care costs impacts.
The aggregate national cost of overweight and obesity combined was $113.9 billion.
21% of all health care dollars spent in the US are due to obesity related health problems. That doesn't even count the loss of work time and other secondary factors impacting the economy.
If Americans want cheaper health care, there are many factors involved, but this one is squarely in their hands.

Great
Parents needed a new reason to be paranoid and overprotective. That's never been a bad thing.
On a serious note, I grew up in Pittsburgh. Prior the 1980s, the air was exceptionally unsafe. Since then, it's only been getting cleaner. What's the trend line for obesity look like? Spoiler: obesity is going up and up, while the air is cleaner than it's ever been for nearly 40 years. Therefore if bad air was thing, you'd expect the exact opposite.
Alarmist news reports over spurious correlations do not help people. They only make your average person lose trust in science. That's not particularly a good thing.

Re:Editors! Huh! What are they good for?
It's almost like we have had an obesity epidemic for the past 40 years. HMMM I wonder why.
This might have something to do with it. I also think that there are other factors.

Re:Carbon footprint of this?
Heat loss is proportional to Surface area while core heat is proportional to volume so bigger bodies can survive better in cold climates. Of course in hot climates its more efficient to be thin and short.
Here you go. You just disproved the reality of climate change in the United States, esp. the South.

Re:obesity also tied to poor diet
that mirrors up pretty well with the data. Note the obesity #'s specifically:

Re:Alternative headline...
Nah. This is just a Democrat posturing for some free publicity
It is odd that a Democrat is proposing this, since most fat people are Republicans. But he is from Tennessee, which is a Republican state and has plenty of fatties.

Did everyone forget the obvious
Let's not forget or skip the more important fact that obesity has TRIPLED in the US since the 1990s. I've seen so many comments blaming Facebook, smart phones, or legislation. With so many of us so much bigger than we were in the 90's, it should come as NO surprise that everyone is being physical less frequently. http://stateofobesity.org/adul...
