Why even bother quoting Michael Mann?
Mann's work has been thoroughly debunked.

Obvious steps we can take as a society
There are several ways we can use technology to promote effective climate action:
First, we need to put an immediate stop to the UAH and RSS satellite measurements of surface temperature, or at least publication of the results. None of our models is able to explain why the temperatures haven't continued to rise as precipitously as we expected after the 90's. The pause is an embarrassment. Ergo, the pause doesn't exist, and we don't want to hear any more about it. The science is settled, OK?
Second, we need to deal once and for all with this weird thing called "the internet", where people apparently are free to say things that we disagree with. A good start would be criminal and civil lawsuits against individuals who express skepticism of our climate agenda. This is already underway, as Michael Mann is suing Mark Steyn for his aspersions about the hockey stick. And others have proposed using the RICO laws to shut down other speech that doesn't toe the line. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, if you please. We are all very serious scientists and public servants, and it's the other side who are corrupted by dirty money. -
Re:MOAH POPCORN
It's almost like free speech is more of a social justice value than a meathead one.

:God help us if we have to rely on conservatives to defend free speech.
A list of such censorship is basically endless, so I will have to suffice with a not-so-brief list of some of the more egregious examples:
- A student at Purdue was found guilty of "racial harassment" for reading a book called Notre Dame Vs the Klan. (The Klan is the bad guy in the book.)
- A candidate in the European elections was arrested in Britain for quoting a passage from Winston Churchill about Islam.
- Gert Wilders, a politician in the Netherlands, was tried on five counts including "criminally insulting Muslims because of their religion."
- Both Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant were dragged in front of the Canadian Human Rights Commission for being Islamophobic.
- Conservative radio host Michael Savage was banned in Britain.
- The group Women, Action and Media convinced Twitter to allow them help report and censor harassment and hate speech. Twitter subsequently suspended the accounts of the anti-feminist Youtubers Thunderfoot and Mykeru (they were later reinstated). Both of them are liberals, by the way.
- Adam Weinstein at Gawker wants to "Arrest Climate-Change Deniers."
- Brendan Eich was forced to resign as CEO of Mozilla for opposing gay marriage. Another guy was fired because someone eaves dropped on his joke about dongles.
- A group called Color of Change was able to get Patrick Buchanan fired from MSNBC for expressing his incorrect opinions (that have been pretty consistent for the last 50 years) in his book Suicide of a Superpower.
- Allegedly, a man was banned from an Oregon college campus for "resembling a rapist."
- The "Pickup Artist" Julien Blanc was barred from entering the UK for making sexist comments.
- The mayor of Massachusetts banned the word "illegal" when referring to, umm, immigrants who came into the United States without going through the proper, legal channels. The Associated Press did

Re:Mann: science by lawsuit
When Canadian columnist Mark Steyn questioned Church of Warminetics doctrine, Mann took the unusual step of filing a suit:
http://www.steynonline.com/656...
I never knew that hiring lawyers was such a crucial element of the scientific method.
And here's the page Mann posted with his letter to the National Review ( which published Mark Steyn's article ):

Notice which one is full of ads and rhetoric...

SLAPPstick Farce by Mark Steyn January 25, 2014 http://www.steynonline.com/601...
"Meanwhile, in the same period [the two-year anti-SLAPP hearing], Dr. Mann has been brandishing his hockey stick out on the campaign trail against Republican candidates. In Virginia, he appeared in the Democrats' attack ads against Ken Cuccinelli, and helped get Clinton's bagman Terry McAuliffe elected governor. When his candidate Mark Herring also prevailed over the GOP in the attorney general's race, Mann crowed and published tweets from his acolytes congratulating him on "two fresh notches on your hockey stick."
Global warming is apparently not a bipartisan research effort, but more of a Democratic National Committee sponsored science project which initially was given National coverage by Al Gore. -
Re:Not about global warming itself, of course
For someone who's supposed to be "happy about the trial", he's hiding it well - http://www.steynonline.com/602... - and prefers it be dismissed.

Re:So what?
Assuming you believe that the world is overpopulated, despite the lack of evidence that the world is anywhere near its carrying capacity, and want positive action to be taken to reduce either the total population or population growth, by far the most effective thing that could be done would be to spread economic freedom. Developed nations have low or falling birthrates (which can create its own problems in a xenophobic, post-industrial nation like Japan. As usual for this kind of thing, Mark Steyn provides some key statistics: "A third of Japanese adults under 30 have never dated. Anyone. Ever." - holy crap!!!!).
All it takes is will, and force.
Why anyone thinks that govt. force is preferable to economic freedom is a mystery to me. Instituting free market capitalism will automatically drop the birth rate and population growth without resorting to forced abortions, draconian govt. imposed restrictions on the number of children the govt. "allows" a person to have or bullying propaganda efforts to get people to use contraception all of which restrict personal freedom and the first two of which end up distorting demographics by creating a surplus of men. The pattern of development of a nation is pretty clear by this point: ag revolution -> pop growth -> industrialization -> pollution, more growth, more wealth creation -> higher standard of living, decreased pollution, improved physical well-being -> increased life expectancy -> declining birth rate -> population size stagnation -> (?).
Trying to reduce population growth in undeveloped countries by promoting abortion, contraception use and education of women doesn't work and creates enemies. Promote freedom instead. Sometimes it seems like there is a deliberate effort to kill people off in undeveloped countries and prevent the survivors from leading modern lives.
be very damned sure that the goal is worth the costs
The ends justify the means. Great idea, Mao.

Re:Short prison terms?
You forget to disable the hyperbole filter before posting. You best be careful with that, miss. Were you to post on the wrong topic, you could find a constable at the door, and yourself up on charges.
. . . the very same words can be proof of two entirely different hate crimes. Iqbal Sacranie is a Muslim of such exemplary "moderation" he's been knighted by the Queen. The head of the Muslim Council of Britain, Sir Iqbal was interviewed on the BBC and expressed the view that homosexuality was "immoral," was "not acceptable," "spreads disease," and "damaged the very foundations of society." A gay group complained and Sir Iqbal was investigated by Scotland Yard's "community safety unit" for "hate crimes" and "homophobia." Independently but simultaneously, the magazine of GALHA (the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association) called Islam a "barmy doctrine" growing "like a canker" and deeply "homophobic." In return, the London Race Hate Crime Forum asked Scotland Yard to investigate GALHA for "Islamophobia." Got that? If a Muslim says that Islam is opposed to homosexuality, Scotland Yard will investigate him for homophobia; but if a gay says that Islam is opposed to homosexuality, Scotland Yard will investigate him for Islamophobia. Two men say exactly the same thing and they're investigated for different hate crimes. ---- GAGGING US SOFTLY

CANADA? You have got to be kidding me
You didn't actually mention Canada as a bastion for free speech rights, did you? Go ask Mark Steyn, who was just tried for human rights violations by some scary Orwellian thing called the Ontario Human Rights Commission for commenting about Islam. Clearly, you cannot speak your mind freely in Canada or some "human rights" tribunal will have you in the dock.
Same thing in Finland. Don't criticize religious groups, or even offend them, and don't criticize ethnic groups, have a site linked to alleged child pr0n, try to produce scary films, or even try to criticize censorship in Finland!
None of those things could be done in the US of A. Nice try though. -
Re:100MPG!? Whatever that is ..
I'll have you to know, we RUN the british empire!
Seriously, we are the ones leading all the english-speaking enterprises such as the Global Crusade on Terror.
And, yes, I'm proud of it!
But you are correct, as continually observed by Mark Steyn http://steynonline.com/, regarding the "good guys" who seriously fight in the war on terror, Iraq, East Timor, and pretty much anywhere else:
"The same core of English-speaking countries, technically multinational but distressingly unicultural and unilingual and indeed, given that most of them share the same head of state, uniregal." (Referring, of course, to the USA, the UK, Canada, and Australia)
His argument, which I agree with, is that this is the legacy of English values from way back, and that the USA is now foremost in upholding these values as the UK settles into a more passive role.
Not that that has much to do with SI vs USCS units, but y'all brung it up to start with! -
Re:Cold War? Terorists?
Actually Rusia is free, but it looks the people in America find themselfs suddenly on the wrong site of the iron curtain.
Russia may be "free" (highly debatable) but it's a) dying (check out the birth rates, somewhere around 1.2 right now?) and b) incredibly corrupt if you're trying to do any actual business. And don't get me started on Putin's dismissal of the regional governors.
America (and a few other parts of "the West") has a shot at staying around "as we know it".... I can't say the same for Russia and most of Western Europe though.
Check out a few of the demographic essays by Mark Steyn for more background... -

Re:Nope ...If by "pretty good" ratings you mean "crappy", then I agree with you completely. And what good is revenue without free cash flow? The reason they are not on LA and Chicago is because they are unable to pay their bills, and XM/Sirius "ad free" formats won't make up the difference. It may not be "small time" by your definition, but 16 markets is puny in comparison to even the lowliest of successful, nationally-syndicated gardening shows. This means that there is a *reason* you haven't seen anyone else do this.
:-) You are, of course, able to believe whatever you want, but I think Air America will be Off Air America within the next year, and it'll only be that long because Al has decided to work for free.Read Steyn: He's got it pegged as well.

Re:Air America RadioRandi is now on Air America Radio from 3-7 I believe. Al Franken is on starting at noon. It is interesting radio... and I'm Canadian.
Heh, Mark Steyn is on the money again!
Honestly, though -- learning about the US from Rush Limbaugh and Al Franken is like learning about Canadian politics from Don Cherry.
