Solid State Drives Break the 50 Cents Per GiB Barrier, OCZ ARC 100 Launched
MojoKid (1002251) writes Though solid state drives have a long way to go before they break price parity with hard drives (and may never make it, at least with the current technology), the gap continues to close. More recently, SSD manufacturers have been approaching 50 cents per GiB of storage. OCZ Storage Solutions, with the help of their parent company Toshiba's 19nm MLC NAND, just launched their ARC 100 family of drives that are priced at exactly .5 per GiB at launch and it's possible street prices will drift lower down the road. The ARC 100 features the very same OCZ Barefoot 3 M10 controller as the higher-end OCZ Vertex 460, but these new drives feature more affordable Toshiba A19nm (Advanced 19 nanometer) NAND flash memory. The ARC 100 also ships without any sort of accessory bundle, to keep costs down. Performance-wise, OCZ's new ARC 100 240GB solid state drive didn't lead the pack in any particular category, but the drive did offer consistently competitive performance throughout testing. Large sequential transfers, small file transfers at high queue depths, and low access times were the ARC 100's strong suits, as well as its low cost. These new drives are rated at 20GB/day write endurance and carry a 3-year warranty. -

Latest SCSI Drive Reviewed
Sivar writes "StorageReview got their hands on a Maxtor Atlas 10K V, the first SCSI hard drive in more than two years to double capacity. Considering how quickly storage was improving just a few years ago, and other news like Intel's cancellation of the 4GHz Pentium IV despite AMD's lead you have to wonder if the traditional predictions of the end of Moore's Observation are actually beginning to come true." -

The review is pretty thorough, but also warns to keep in mind that the reviewed unit is only beta hardware. -

They are also resurrecting the (formerly Quantum) Fireball name, shortening their warranty (previously 3 years, now 1 year), and adding some slim (38% thinner) drives to their lineup." New products like this make me feel like I'm not keeping up fast enough. I bought a 100GB drive last spring and it's not even half full yet! -

Kenneth Yu writes: "You might recall the overwhelming response to a recent 'Ask Slashdot' regarding the abnormally high failure rates of IBM 75GXP Hard drives, and the pulling of all 75GXP from Pair Networks' Servers. A class action lawsuit has been filed by Michael Granido, Jr., on behalf of himself and all others similarly situated. Apropos that, jriskin writes: "Storagereview.com has its new reliability database up and running. I have no affiliation with the site, but it only benifits the community to have as many people contribute as possible. The database is a listing of hard drives and whether or not they have failed, when they were purchased, etc. So get over there and put in all your HD data!" Things like this could help eliminate the anecdotal-only nature of many of hardware complaints, especially if people who are happy with their hardware bother to report it.
Falling far from a tree has nothing to do with it. Majik writes "A quick correction - the iPod has *10* gigs of storage, not 5 (or 6 like the Nomad). And with the Firewire interface you can move an entire CD in under a minute. Although I admit I was hoping for more out of the product announcement, it's still pretty darn cool ... "
On the other hand, jchristopher writes: "Love it or hate it, Apple's new iPod digital music player is here. Yesterday, many people commented that "at least it has no copy protection" and praised Apple's attitude toward digital music. Unfortunately, this may not be the case - according to this New York Times article, the iPod does indeed have copy protection - MP3 files copied to the iPod from one Mac to the iPod CAN'T be offloaded onto a different computer. Ouch!" That means (at least without further hacking) it can't be used as a transfer medium between the G3 and work and the iMac kept hidden in your darkest closet, which is sort of a shame considering that it has all the right things built in to be even better than the several portable firewire drives on the market.
Unorginal Equipment Makers. An Anonymous Coward writes: "This is a follow-up on a previous story posted to Slashdot about Microsoft's anti-competitive OEM contracts." It's a report by German journalist Erik Möller (hi, Erik!), who too an extremely thorough look at the details of OEM bundling deals, and what they mean to customers. Möller's conclusion: "No operating system will ever be able to compete with Microsoft Windows on the desktop market as long as OEMs cannot legally install it besides Windows without losing their license."
'Technical meaures' covers a pretty broad swath. Robotech_Master writes "The RIAA has responded to the 'license to virus' story, calling it a false Internet rumor and explaining their side of the story." So the RIAA officially does not want a license to hack, at least on paper.

Breaking the ATA Addressing Barrier
BitMan sent in an overview of the next step in addressing large disk drives. I tend to run into these every few years when I try to add a new, large drive to an older machine and find out that some factor is keeping me from being able to use the full drive capacity. Well, the next step will push those limits out quite a ways, giving us a few more years of ever-increasing drive space.BitMan writes: "If you haven't heard, there has been a new disk geometry limitation looming for some time at 128GB (gigabytes of 2^30 bytes), which is 137GB (gigabytes of 10^9 bytes). As many will note, there have been various BIOS and OS limitations in disk geometry before -- e.g., 512/528MB, 2GB, 8GB, 32/33GB, etc... But what makes the latest 128/137GB "limit" different is that it revolves around the "hard, physical addressing" limitations of the ATA (AT Attachment) interface. 28-bits are used for addressing, which results in the 2^28 sector * 512 bytes/sector = 128/137GB limitation. As such, hardware fiends like myself were wondering when the industry would get around to addressing this "hard" limitation in the ATA interface.
Fortunately, the solution is already in the works. The ANSI ATA committee has accepted a proposal from Maxtor that extends the ATA bus addressing to 48-bits. This allows for up to 128 pB (petabytes of 2^50), which is 144pB (petabytes of 10^15), sizes. This should tide the PC world over until the 2TB (terabytes of 2^40) limit is reached, which is the maximum number of sectors a 32-bit OS can address -- i.e. 2^32 sector * 512 bytes/sector = 2TB.
In addition to breaking the addressing limitation, another addressing limitation was overcome for performance considerations. The maximum number of sectors transferrable in any command was boosted from 8-bit = 256 sectors/command (~128KB max. transfer/command) to 16-bit = 65,536 sectors/command (~32MB max. transfer/command). This should increase ATA/IDE performance in burst transfers and many other operations.
A whitepaper on the new proposal can be found here from Maxtor. Small correction in the article: Maxtor says 144 pB (petabytes) = 144,000 GB (gigabytes), which is quite incorrect. 144pb (petabytes of 10^15) = 144,000 TB (terabytes of 10^12) = 144,000,000 GB (gigabytes of 10^9).
