Re:This has got to be the lamest guilt trip
Err.. It's Tasmania, and yes, we grow opium poppies. I have a small patch in my backyard, the processing isn't so hard but packing it into the little plastic capsules takes ages and your hands go numb.

Re:Lead into gold ???
Turning gold into lead would be easier, but it's not as much fun for pointing out what neutron sources can be used for.
:-)
BTW, I dug up an article on the process. Here's a more technical explanation. -
Re:More info?
Intrinsic is just another way of saying unexplainable: saying the redshift is "intrinsic" means that it is not due to anything. In other words, it has no explanation. That doesn't exactly seem scientific.
On the contrary. You do not have to have an explanation in hand. Dark energy, for example, has a name, but not an explanation (calling it Einstein's cosmological constant doesn't help much either
:) Yet it can be used to generate hypotheses and tested, given certain assumptions. In this case, we have an existing theory, and some disparate observations (e.g. at their measured redshift distances, older galaxies in any cluster seem to group on the near side, which is anti-Copernican) that have raised suspicions.
Having a hypothesis that expansion of space cannot statistically account for the observed redshift is a perfectly valid, and scientific, premise for experimentation.
That said, there are some theorists working on the problem.
Contenders for a mechanism:
- CREIL
- Compton Effect
- Plasma Redshift
- Variable Mass Theory (cf. Mach's Principle)
Some of these have got to be wrong, of course, (and this doesn't rule out other mechanisms) but those will show up on further experiments.
Cheers

ot: Tasmanian Wolf, not devil, is extinct.
The Tasmanian Devil is endangered, but not anywhere near extinct. The "practically extinct" animal you are thinking of is likely the Tasmanian Wolf, also called the Tasmanian Tiger. This animal, however, is much less remembered, due to its extinction(?) and the fact that there is no Warner Brothers cartoon character to make it so everyone thinks it is so cool.

Linux/Windows are Enterprise!According to the handful of sources I just checked (Webopedia, Net Lingo, and this among them), an enterprise is simply a business organization. From Webopedia: "In the computer industry, the term is often used to describe any large organization that utilizes computers. An intranet, for example, is a good example of an enterprise computing system."
I find it hard to believe that Microsoft or Linux would not fall under the category of "enterprise" products here. Certainly, Microsoft and Linux develop enterprise products for enterprise computing systems on enterprise computing systems...
I'm sure the sources I checked are not the final authority on such things, but I only bring it up because I have never known any other definition of "enterprise" with regard to computing. Now, if you're just commenting that some enterprise products are far superior to others, I can agree with that.

Is it really extinct?
http://www.tased.edu.au/tot/fauna/tiger.html
"The Tasmanian Tiger , also called the Tasmanian Wolf, is a large marsupial native to Tasmania. Most scientists believe it to be extinct, however each year there are about a dozen unconfirmed sightings in remote areas of the state, and several reported sets of Tiger tracks." -
A video clip of a Tasmanian Tiger...
This Tour of Tasmania: Tasmania Tiger Web page shows the last photograph of this tiger in captivity and a video clip. Both picture and video clip are black and white though. The wide mouth shot amazes me.

Hobart
I am not named after the capital of Tasmania, nor am I named after an industrial dough mixer brand.
I am named after one of the two protagonists from The Adventures of Hobart Floyt and Alacrity Fitzhugh trilogy by Brian Daley, who died on Feb 11, 1996. He wrote the novelization of Tron. He also wrote many Han Solo novels, and Robotech novels under the pseudonym "Jack McKinney". The trilogy is a pretty decent read, it includes:
REQUIEM FOR A RULER OF WORLDS
JINX ON A TERRAN INHERITANCE
FALL OF THE WHITE SHIP AVATAR
Unfortunately I believe all three are out of print. It'd be nice if Del Rey or someone would release never-to-be-reprinted novels on the 'net under some free license :-P
Further history: Upon getting a modem in 1985 at age 11 for my Atari 8-bit, the first handle I used with any regularity was Asmodeus, then The Shadow. When I signed on to DiversiDial #6 (DDials were a 6-line 300 baud multiuser chat system run on Apple IIs with all 6 slots filled with modems! They were networked to each other like some giant realtime Fidonet!) which was "Silly Chat", I ran into "Alacrity" who was already a user (and I think another Atari user). He pretty much said that there were several other "The Shadow"s, and suggested Hobart. The name stuck.
For the record, I've also been using the nick on EFNet since 1990, and I am not the alternative-lifestyled gent from Australia. ;-) -
