Hold off...
Sounds good, but I won't be buying one until Team Xecuter is designing product for the xbox2. -
Re:Commercials at "The Movies".
This will get you started.
This is who made the modchip that I put into my Xbox.
I am using Xbox Media Center for all my media playing needs. -
Re:Honestly...you may be right. But i know many people personally that got tired of watching their xboxen collect dust (after playing halo..and maybe that other decent game which escapes me right now). for these people, myself included, the promise of a $30-$50 modchip which could actually create something useful out of a paperweight was pretty damn cool.
I modded my xbox with just the X3 chip, not a hard-drive, and installed Xbox Media Center on it so i can access all my (legal) music on my network.
Now, after a year of my xbox gathering dust, i'm finally getting some use out of its digital audio outputs and decent graphics capabilities. i have no intention of copying xbox games and it's not because they all pretty much suck. (ok i heard halo2 was ok but for xbox live only). it's possible that i'm in the minority here, but i doubt it. in fact, i'm going to buy another xbox on ebay to mod so i can add music to another room.
I hear the new Xbox won't have a harddrive in it and will be much harder to mod. in that case i won't be buying one becuase the games would have to be unbelievable - which, they won't be. i'll be getting the PS3...

Re:Beh
Game consoles are supposed to be simple, turn on - insert disc - play game. Sounds like you might as well just buy a computer.
Which is why Sony also make the Vaio range of AV computers, and have also been working with Apple, arguably the current masters of digital convergence.Personally I've taken the most complicated middle road and put a Mod Chip in my XBox, installed the GPL Xbox Media Centre and stuck it on my mixed system home network, so it can now play an crazy number of media formats.

Re:Xbox LinuxThe xbox I think would be a very good implementation for a 1000 video media center. However, without the linux.
You could get an Xecuter 2 Pro from Team Xecuter to mod the xbox. Then go ahead and replace the default desktop with an Xecuter bios, and load that puppy up with XBMC, an Xbox Media Center dashboard (or one of the other more popular dashs).
Going from there, you would download dvd2xbox. This will give you an exact 1 to 1 rip of your DVDs, Xbox games etc. You can simply play then from your hard drive with the default xbox dvd player (or a homebrew one).Of course, if you want to fit all 1TB or so you'll need to add an external box with the 4HDs you have with a switch. The xbox can't use more than one HD at a time, so just order them from A to Z. The outcome though would be an amazing shuttle like system that you can use to play games, and even control fully (except for the games) with your xbox remote.

Re:$99!?!?
You can hack any version of the XBOX with a hardware modchip, regardless of whether Live 2.0 is installed. This applies to all versions: 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and the 1.5.
I will agree that the software exploits won't work with Live 2.0. However, most XBOX hackers chip their boxes anyway.
