Re:old message
So this is something you'd prefer?
That looks like something the BOFH would do. Yes, No, close button - they would all be devastating.

Re:Can't they just...
I have a drive like this, a WD Elements 1TB. It's a 2.5" drive and the board only has a micro-USB connector.
Not my pictures, just the first thing that poped up on GIS: http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f16/damaged-micro-usb-soldered-on-wd-elements-se-1tb-external-635019.html -
Re:Latest drivers may fix this
Yea, whenever I relate my problems with my 4870 ATI cards and the BSOD on boot just about every time I turn on the computer (I have 50 or so
.dmp files from Jan 30 to 1 today) I get jumped on as well.Which forums have you gone to to solve your issue?
You may find that it is not the video card on it's own.

Re:Study Design a Must
Just don't put HP in charge of coming up with a standard! They have a horrible track record at this! I've had two HP notebooks, a ZD7000 and a DV9000, and both of them developed power connector issues within two years. This is well documented. One would think that there ought to be a cable or charger of some sort that would allow you to charge via USB, since that works for most mobile phones and small devices, but maybe the USB spec can't handle the amount of power necessary to power the whole computer.

Re:Until Linux can install as easily as Windows...
OK, so XP or Vista and that card works for you. Great. But things aren't even completely rosy here in Microsoft land: a quick read suggests
many
people
have
issues
with this card even in Windows. These people were doing plenty of, as you say, chicken killing by moonlight.
Another search finds a report that the card does work with the latest Ubuntu release, so you might have better luck if you tried again now.
Considering how many people I know who have become so frustrated with their PC experience in Windows (mainly viruses and spyware) that they threw out the whole computer and bought a Mac, I think it's pretty reasonable to suggest to someone that they might need to buy a new known Linux compatible video card to make things work. -

And let's not forget..
the foreign intelligence services and other spy types that are interested... oh and the Chinese Cyber Warriors... Oh - Organized crime is on the rampage such that the Feds miss old fashioned hackers. And Spammer botnets, and so on. Yep, way to blame those poor Stereotypical H4x0rz to get your name in the press yet again.
