Re:Arrest that Valenti
Isn't evidence that is illegally obtained, not valid for use in a court of law?
No, not necessarily. You may be thinking of the exclusionary rule that, in criminal cases, keeps out evidence the government has obtained in violation of the 4th Amendment.

Re:Just walk over and win?
Actually, you could just walk over and win in Myst. The game was horrendously easy if you knew how to play the endgame, it took five minutes. You only have to solve three puzzles to beat the game.
True enough, but taking this as a criticism of MYST is like criticising a novel for having a weak plot, because you could just skip to the last chapter and find out whodunnit. I think MYST has to be viewed as something other than a "game," per se, because part of the enjoyment and artistry lies in the unfolding of the story. We call it a "game' for lack of a better term, but it really did create a new category.
In most of those worlds you could simply go wherever you wanted anyways, another part of the fun was discovering the puzzles and story, none of which was given to you at the beginning of the game. A game like Myst was about exploration, and making that real-time can only improve it.
Yes, indeed. I don't think I'd want to play MYST again with 3D as the only change, buit I'd like to see a 3D MYST-like game as the next step.

Re:A major gripe...I have a big problem with all of these types of games... At the end of the day, they are all very linear. You have to do A before you can do B which in turn allows you to do C. What if I happen to think up a better way which allows me to jump straight to C and go back to A and B later? Tough! Why can't I do C first. God damn it! I wanna do C first!!
Even worse are the situations when you can't ever do Z, even if it is far more obvious and intuitive a solution than the A-B-C sequence. For example:
SPOILER WARNING
There's a place in MYST where the big puzzle consists of turning on lights to shine into a certain room. The puzzle requires a long, complicated sequence of actions to turn on some big-ass light that shines in through an underwater window. Not far from away in this room is a room with a chest of drawers. In one of the drawers are some candles. Of course, you can't pick up the candles.
The booklet that comes with MYST says something like, "to solve the puzzles, think about what you would do in the situation if you were really there." Funny, but if I were really there, and I needed to see in a dark room, I'd use the friggin' candles!

Re:3DO?
Please excuse the ignorance
... but what was their major malfunction?
Early on, Wired magazine plugged them as the Next Big Thing. That's a sure-fire technology killer.

My 2 Yen
Lots of good suggestions here. Certainly agree that Lain is outstanding -- and that if you liked Lain, you should see Neon Genesis Evangelion .
Re. Bubblegum Crisis : The original is outstanding, and I think the new TV version is at least as good. Since it's a TV series rather than OVA, the writers/director has had more time to develop the story more subtly and more cleverly.
Re. Ranma 1/2 : the first season is a must-see. After that, it goes down hill fast.
I don't think anyone has mentioned Devil Hunter Yoko . I've only seen the first couple of eps, but it's a goofy, funny take on the magical-girl-versus-supernatural-baddies formula.
Gunbuster , while dated, is worth a look. At first it may seem like another Studio Gianax jiggle-fest, but it turns out to be an interesting look at the effect of relativity and time-dilation on those who live and work on high-speed spaceships.
I could ramble for another hour, but I'll stop now.
Speaking of anime: a no-prize goes to the first person to identify where my username comes from.
Shameless plug: Once it's actually on line, in about a week, TETSUJIN.ORG will be a fine place to talk about anime, or anything else having to do with Japan.

Re:why anime on tv is NOT good.
"Card Captors" on Saturday mornings here, is that a watered-down version of something that's really cool in original Japanese, or is it the first in a line of 'let's make some crap anime to sell to Americans' shows?
It is indeed a watered-down version of a much cooler Japanese show.
When I first saw Card Captor Sakura in Japanese at Nan Desu Kan two years ago, I thought it would be a great show for someone to import to the USA. Great CLAMP visuals, a strong young female in the lead, and a story premise with a lot of potential.
So I was pretty disappointed to see Cardcaptors, the Americanized version being show in WB Kids on Saturday morning. They've diminished Sakura's central role (the title change is a good giveaway there) and in the process messed with the continuity, starting the series somewhere in the middle.
