Apple's lawyers are always busy...
Here's another example of what they've been up to. In short, Tex9 (a small company which makes open source software) launched xtunes, but got a letter from Apple telling them to change the name... (sounded like iTunes) now it's known as sumi . (sounds familiar, right?
:) ) -

It won't be "gnuPod" for long
Considering that Apple, uh, "requested" that MediaFour rename the XPod software (now XPlay), and that the developers rename the xtunes jukebox (now "sumi")... I don't think "gnuPod" will be long for this world.

I have an ipodI am not a big Mac fan and I hate how when you post anything negative about any apple product on
/., you are instantly modded down, but I am an I-pod owner. I don't even have a mac, but originally I got it working on windows with Xplay and now I can access my ipod through Linux with Xpod. I'm a firm believer in the superiority of the ipod, the design, the interface, and especially the service. Last week after owning my ipod for 9 months, it finally died. I figured I would call apple and see what I could do. Instead of having to go through any hassle, Apple was really smooth.- Apple overnights me a box
- I stick ipod in box
- I call to have the shipping company pick up box
- Apple sends me a brand new ipod, arrives 2 days later

iPod is definitely the way to go.
Previously the refurbished price for the 5GB iPod was at 299$US, and now all the 5GB iPods have dropped to this price.
With a price of 299$US, a 5GB hard disk and approximately 10 hours of use, you cannot go wrong. In addition to that, xpod has been created for use as a linux client for the ipod.
As of yet, support for Ogg Vorbis has not been created, but once it has, you will be sure to see it at http://www.ipodhacks.com

apple ipod
The Apple iPod is the best. It is much tinier and cuter than the Jukebox, and can hold up to 20 gigs. xTunes (tex9.com) provides Linux support for the iPod which I can certify works fine. However, you must have access to a Mac or PC with xPlay to update the firmware, currently 1.0.2. Buy a $30 firewire card and transfer five gigabytes in ten minutes (This particular card worked under linux on my x86).

ipod definitely
refurbed ipods seem to run about $250 and look to run in linux via
xpod
and windows via ephpod with macopener
i guess this is until there is some kernel driver for HFS+ or someone finds a way to convert a mac ipod to a windows ipod with the fat32 format... -
Re:iPod kicks ass
But there is iPod for Linux.

Ugh, brushed metal. Stupid.
This is really cool tech, a really cool program, and good for linux.
But i couldn't help but notice: did you see the little thumbnail screenshot? It appears that they are attempting to directly copy the iTunes interface, right down to the positioning of widgets and aqua+brushed_metal skin.
STUPID. Apple has made it very, very clear that they consider the skins/themes to their programs "trade dressing", and that if you sell a product with the same interface and textures as one of theirs, they WILL send lawyers after you. Notice that anyone who tries to make a theme explicitly described as "aqua lookalike" gets a letter from Apple Legal. No matter whether you believe apple has the legal right to do this, you have to at least acknowledge *they do this*, and it really isn't worth the bother of risking having to deal with apple legal. Just make something DIFFERENT, and then this won't be a problem. It's just a matter of saneness and safety.
I will agree that trying to copyright "look and feel" is bullshit, but look. Skins are images. You can copyright images. There is no reason to pretend that a skin/theme to an mp3 player is not a copyright violation just because, well, the textures may look exactly the same as they do in the interface you're knocking off, but hey, they aren't EXACTLY the same images! Um, no.
You can also copyright layouts, like in graphics & design, leading me to think that if you create a program where every button, text field, and interface widget is in exactly the same place as in iTunes, and you got hauled into court over this, you WOULD lose.
What is so hard about just HUMORING APPLE and DESIGNING YOUR OWN INTERFACES AND GUI SKINS? You just look stupid when you clumsily copy someone else's interface vertabrim. Yes, i get the idea is to be all like "look, you can do things on linux just the same as on mac!", but what it actually COMES ACROSS AS is "look, i am too uncreative or incompetent to design a user interface, so i just ripped off Apple's wholesale!"
