open source instant messaging, right hereWhat we need is an open source, secure protocol for chatting, newly implemented for today's uses.
RFC1459 is still being heavily implemented; it is open source, secure, in current use, and fits the online dialogue needs of millions every day.

Milestones
This has happened many times before.
irc.blackened.com went down for similar reasons.
It was the first IRC server to break 5,000 clients among other firsts.
At one point, the packeting got so bad the entire state of Arizona's bandwidth was effected (or something to that effect.)
For a good resource on EFNet history, I recommend
the EFnet history page at the-project. -
EFnet history
Four years ago, Jarkko Oikarinen wrote a history of EFnet. In late '9, irc.colorado.edu reached 1000 users. Interesting read for anyone interested in how EFNet became what it is today.

Does *this* have something to do with it?
I saw this post when searching for Dianora on google. I've not used IRC in years and am unfamiliar with the battles going on... but perhaps something in these threads can explain exactly what happened to cause the DoS?

irc.blackened.com - mjr's delink letter
Funny..I read mjr's letter from 1998 just a few days ago (I visit blackened.com every so often, and sometimes I reread the letter--it serves as a sad reminder of the lamers that are everywhere on IRC these days):
"Even the big ones fall."
