A Little Bit Of BBS Nostalgia
Ron Harwood writes: "I was getting nostalgic for the BBS door games of the late 80's and early 90's -- and decided that some of these could quite easily be brought onto the Web. So, with help from some of the players, I've created a Web version of the old BBS game TradeWars -- and released it as open source. You can try it out at BlackNova.net or download the source for your self at SourceForge. It's made with PHP and MySQL and it's getting reasonably bug free. :)" -
Crusoe To Be Used By Netwinder, IBM, NEC, Others
theGEEK writes "Rebel.com will be making Netwinders with the crusoe chip from Transmeta. In related news, Fujitsu, Hitachi, IBM and NEC will all be showing off notebooks using the Crusoe today." -
Project Grizzly
theGEEK writes "A friend came across this article on Suck yesterday. I actually know this guy... and his Anti-Bear Suit is actually quite impressive. Troy is a very interesting, if somewhat dramatic guy-so much so the National Film Board of Canada made a movie about him, and his project. You'll never believe your eyes when you see him repeatedly get hit by a truck at at 50 KPH or when he gets beaten by bikers wielding axes and baseball bats." So, if anyone wants to get me a Christmas present, I'll take one of these. -
Deja News Privacy Questioned
theGEEK writes "An internet 'watchdog' discovered that Deja News is actually logging their users e-mail traffic." Is this related to the recent thing about them tracking every click through redirector scripts? Personally I'm not threatened, but I'm not a privacy nut either. What do you think? -
The Complete guide to Linux Distributions
theGEEK writes "Techweb has "Your Complete Guide to Linux Distributions" - it's a fairly large article aimed at corporate types for integrating Linux into the company. " Covers all the biggies and some of the minors more geared towards the suits. -
VA Going Bigtime
VA Research had their little press conference today. They talked about their Linux.com acquisition and their intel investment- they also are reporting that they are going to offer 24/7 on-site service through DecisionOne. Most interesting, is that as part of their intel deal, they'll be porting Linux to Merced (under NDA) and are targetting a complete GPL source release of the port upon the release of the chip. Update: 03/02 06:31 by CT : theGEEK wrote in to link to a wired article that talks about the cost of linux.com. The article basically says less than the top bid of $5 million, but more than a million. -
AMD beats Intel in January sales
theGEEK wrote in to send us a link to a story where you can read that in January, AMD accounted for 43.9% of unit sales, to Intel's 40.3%. For the first time, Intel is #2. Update: 02/26 12:44 by H :It should be noted that this is only *retail*, and does not include corporate. Still, I bet things are happy at AMD today.
