Re:A few...
Love newegg also, use them frequently. Have also used these two occasionally with good success...

Although, I will admit it has been about two years since I have used either of those two, so YMMV. -
Re:Frist!
Try Xandros(and no,I don't work for them,I just never have any trouble with their distro). I couldn't get Ndiswrapper to play nice with my broadcom, but Xandros installed, configured, and ran it out of the box. While the cost isn't much cheaper than OEM Windows, the lack of hassle and easy licenses (you are allowed to install on as many machines as you own for non-commercial use,and one for commercial use) make it worth it. Try the free trial for Pro,and if it works for you the home version(which the only difference is AD connectivity) can be found for $29 here-http://www.thenerds.net/CHANNEL_SOURCES_DISTRIBUTION_CO.Xandros_Desktop_Home_Edition_Complete_Product.DSKS400NAEN.html?affid=1&srccode=cii_9324560&cpncode=08-32269569-2&affid=3

Re:Cisco switch performance review
There is zero explanation of the testing methodology, much less the goal of the test. Citing packets per second is a bad measurement without defining the size or size range of the packets. Especially considering that fully realizing gigabit speeds is best accomplished by using jumbo frames (9000 byte frames vs typical 1500 byte frames). In any case, the 48 port 3570 switch the author tested is intended for user connection aggregation in a lan closet, not core data center operations. And the 13k price is list, expect to pay 25% less then that. In short, the author is at best woefully uninformed and at worst a crank.

Cisco PIX 501
Well it's more than $100 but much less per host if you have more than one machine behind it (say 10 to 50). The Cisco PIX 501 is a nice, capable embedded firewall solution.

Re:Hypocrites.
Hello. ZoneAlarm is the best personal software firewall on the internet, and they offer a fully functional FREE version (it is NOT a timed trial). And no, I don't work for ZoneLabs. Here is the link.

You can also buy a hardware firewall very cheap. I use one of these at home. Here is an example:

Good Luck, and screw Symantec!

More Inexpensive Models
I use the Plantronics M1000 ($119 MSRP), and it does just fine. I can even have coherent conversations in a machine shop, with 85 dB in the background. The cost - $51.86 plus shipping. The headsets reviewed here are far too expensive for my taste.

I went for DVD+RW
I had to take the plunge due to my having many GB's of digicam generated photos. My DLT backups were just using too many tapes.
Some random thoughts:
The second generation DVD+RW drives are just coming out. The only one availasble is the HP 200i. Here's an overview of the 2nd gen drives, and here's an overview of the 1st gen drives.
The 2nd generation drives support DVD+R, many of the 1st do not.
TheNerds.net have the best media prices. I looked a lot and could find no better.
The HP drive, which I bought, comes with "drive letter access" software. Basically, a packet writer so you can just use the Windows explorer (yes, where I use the drive) to drag and drop files onto it. I have the suspicion that my McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1 stopped working when I installed the HP software. McAfee has not been able to figure out why their software is not working (service error 5011, which is a timeout of some sort).
I've been trying to author some DVD's, and I had good luck playing my DVD+RW's in my DVD player. I used a trial of Uleads DVD Workshop.
I held off until the 2nd gen drives were available, and was forced to purchase the HP because it's the only one out. I would have prefered the Philips DVDRW228 over the HP, but no one has the Philips drive in stock, that I could find.
So far, I'm happy, and I'm hoping HP will update their drivers and VirusScan will start working again.
