jjr writes: "It seems that IBM has a Open Source Project called Daisy that does a lot of what transmeta does. Their code-morphing technology supports PowerPC, x86, and S/390, as well as the Java Virtual Machine. They Morph the [code] into VLWI just like transmeta but they still have some issues to work out. Other issues dealt with in the report include self-modifying code, precise exceptions, and aggressive reordering of memory references in the presence of strong MP consistency and memory mapped I/O."

jjr writes: "An article over at Cnet talks about how bill on internet tax is going to the Governor's desk next week for signing. This bill will affect alot of companies since California is a hub for a lot of Internet companies. We will see how this one plays out." Note that California (not that it's the only state with such ambitions) seems eager to snare wads of interstate money by snagging it even when people buy goods or services online which the brick-and-mortar versions of the same merchants don't carry.

jjr writes "An article over at Infoworld say that a former exec of Novell is creating a open source(GPL) netware compatible OS. you can play with it over at www.timpanogas.com" The operating system is named MANOS, so I keep expecting to see a lot of hands involved.

jjr writes "An article over at TechWeb states the date for the release of the source code Star Office 6.0 is on Oct. 13 and it will be released at openoffice.org." We've been hearing rumors of this for some time now, but I'm still looking for confirmation of the license, but the rumor is that it will be Open Source compliant, and hopefully GPL (especially considering the (well deserved) heat they took over their previous license). Rumors about the license in German. I've also heard that the among the major goals is a GTK port of the suite. Update: 07/19 01:31 PM by CT : It's apparently official: Finally a story in English proclaiming that it will be released under the GPL!

Now at www.linuxfromscratch.org you can teach yourself how Linux works and even make your own Linux distro from the info they have at this site." This looks like a cool resource especially if your school or place of employ (or coven, biker gang, hunter-gatherer tribe, etc.) wants to create a site- or affinity-specific distribution.
