Re:a few highlights for the latecomer
it removed my start page, failed to import my bookmarks, and immediately decided it would become the default browser instead of Chrome.
According to this article, Mozilla is complaining that Windows 10 makes it harder to make non-Microsoft software be the default software.
Microsoft has altered Windows 10 so that users have to explicitly set a default app for applications like mail, calendar, or web browsers. The change means the setup installers for Chrome and Firefox can no longer set themselves as the default browser during the install process.

Re:I know
Not me. Been beta-testing the preview builds for the last bunch of months, and I'm honestly unhappy to say there's no must-have, great, or even kinda-cool feature in 10 that compels me to upgrade from 7 (other than the stick-it-to-ya of planned obsolescence).
OTOH, there's a lot in Windows 10 that's just irritating. The lack of customizability in the UI (if you don't like the flat, playskool look, you're SOL). The yanking out of some of the fun time-wasting games (some have been replaced with "modern" versions for... what exactly? to acclimate users to the "modern" look? to force users to browse through the Store to find Minesweeper?). The unpolished split between the "modern" Settings app and the Control Panel for getting real work done. The insistence that you sign into a Microsoft account. The click-bait-laden live-tiles. The defaults to the use of ugly, too-big, less-capable "modern" apps for basic functions like PDF viewing, photo viewing, or even a simple calculator.
If I think about it,if I move from 7 because 7 is at EOL, I am going to spend my first bunch of hours shutting off everything that 10 offers. I would ditch Edge/Project Spartan for Chrome, first thing. Dull down the colors any way I can. Install classic-shell. Shut off the click-bait live-tiles from aggravating my ADHD with TMZ OMG bullcrap. Un-modernize everything by installing and making default 7-versions of the calculator, a PDF viewer, minesweeper, VLC, rainmeter, WinAero Tweaker, Picassa, etc. And then probably go looking for some skinning hacks, if any work on 10, because I can't stand that awful playskool look.
In other words, spend hours undoing everything that makes 10 look and act like 10. That's a helluva lot of wasted time for what's supposed to be an "upgrade". And for what? Touch? I don't use touch. DirectX 12? I don't game enough AAA titles to know the difference. The only reason I see to go to 10 is because Microsoft plans on pulling the plug on 7. Eventually. Or maybe if 10 handles scaling properly on ultra-high-res screens. Eventually.
If Windows to you is merely a platform from which to launch Steam and your favorite full-screen game(s), you probably have nothing to lose with 10. If you have a Surface, the "modern" apps make some sense (although when I tried them, Android and iOS equivalents are more polished and work better). But if you actually have to get real work done on the desktop like you do in 7 every day, 10 don't offer not one damn thing for the trouble. None that I can tell, anyway.

Not going to happen any time soon...
Too many internet pages rely on Flash for video and advertisements... and,as much as we hate them, advertisements means money...
I'm not saying that progress isn't being made. Youtube dropped Flash this year and is now using HTML5 as the default for video, but that doesn't fix legacy videos.
http://www.theverge.com/2015/1...My thought is that Flash will be around for another 3 to 5 years. The quoted "18 months" is just wishful thinking....

Re:Wait a minute...
A big company in an unaligned industry buys a formerly popular hardware maker, now falling on hard times, and eventually sells or pretty much writes all the assets of the acquisition off. I'm having a strange sense of deja vu... almost like this has happened before several times.
Oh wait, it has happened before with Oracle and Sun. And again with HP and Palm. And again with Google and Motorola.
You would think people would notice a pattern here...
The pattern is its more profitable to claim sketchy tax write offs than pay taxes on massive real profits.

Re:Sure ...
So you're arguing that it's not going Mach 1 because it's designed to only go Mach
.99868593955. Apparently you don't believe in rounding to significant digits. As for typical Jet Speeds, those are below Mach .9, and typically in the Mach 0.8 range. Mach 0.15-0.2 is a pretty significant difference. Moreover you are talking about a different G-Force measurement then either me or the standard Musk has designed. When taking turns the relevant measure is the lateral G-Force measure, and Coasters don't go too high on that because if they did 6 Gs laterally a 200 lb dude would be exerting 1200 pounds of pressure on the side of their roller-coaster, and it probably can't handle that. They top out at 0.5 Gs lateral. Aircraft don't do a lot of lateral Gs either, partly because they have to go straight really fast or fall from the sky, partly because they have even less structural strength to resist extra pressure on the fuselage, but mostly because people start throwing the fuck up once you break 0.2 lateral. They try to stay below 0.15 laterally unless something has gone horribly wrong.
The whole plan is vintage Musk -- equal parts brilliant engineering, pooh-poohing the standards literally everyone else uses (0.2 Gs laterally is what everything in transportation, except Hyperloop, does), unwarranted financial optimism (his $700 Million tunneling budget won't get him all the way through a single mountain, and Cali has a couple ranges of the damn things), and excellent spin (for example, his planned route technically does not go from LA to San Fran, it goes from 30 miles from LA to the San Francisco Bay, which reduces his costs by roughly 75%, but nobody calls him on it). Given some development the engineering could be very interesting, but you really need a lot of that development.
-
Re:Sure ...
The banking thing is interesting, but you totally destroy your credibility with the 3.0 Gs thing.
Hyperloop is not supposed to be a mode of travel grandma can't use. 0.2G is roughly what the competition is doing, and Musk's proposed 0.5 G would actually be comparable to a roller coaster.
This is an idea that'll work great and be near or under cost at scale, but that's because people won't be in it. I am not saying it's a bad idea, or that it's not possible that we'll be zipping our way around on Hyperloops in 2100, but this is a new technology. It's not software. It is pretty much impossible for it to be all three of faster, cheaper, and better without a few more years of aggressive development.

Thanks. The Verge says that
Update, June 21st 9:45AM: Microsoft has updated its blog post today and removed references to "remain activated." The stealthy edit isn't acknowledged, and we've reached out to the company for comment.
Do you have any updates since then?

The link didn't work in above for some reason. Apple pushing music labels to kill free Spotify streaming ahead of Beats relaunch Why Apple wants to end the era of free music streaming
Oddly enough, there's not a single music publisher who says they have even been contacted by Apple concerning that issue -so either Apple has every single publisher in their pocket already - or the clowns at BusinessInsider are again blowing their coke the wrong way.

Apple wants all the big music publishers to cease allowing any free streaming of music. Apple pushing music labels to kill free Spotify streaming ahead of Beats relaunch Why Apple wants to end the era of free music streaming
And again, like I asked (and was not answered) in the other thread in which you posted this screed yesterday:
Citation, please; or STFU, hater.
And no, a single blog quoting "multiple [unnamed] sources" doesn't count as a "citation". Nor does another article that quotes the blog that quotes "multiple sources". Someone has to actually stand up and say "Yes, I saw this, I heard this." Unnamed sources don't cut it. Especially when the Business Insider article you proffered seems to say that multiple entities from mulitple related angles (labels, artists, etc) are on the "No Free Streaming" bandwagon; but it is clear that "The Verge" is the one-and-only-source that is saying that Apple is actively pushing that agenda. -

Re:American Hero
Well, among other things, he revealed that:
1) The NSA intercepts and stores virtually all communications sent on electronic networks anywhere it can reach. Not just metadata. In the case of phone calls, they also speech->text them and make that archive searchable.
http://rt.com/news/172284-nsa-...
http://www.globalresearch.ca/n...
http://www.theguardian.com/wor...2) The NSA constantly works at ways to break into encrypted communications, including hacking into the VPNs of supposedly friendly governments.

3) The NSA listens to the cell calls of friendly foreign leaders. (hopefully, also, unfriendly ones).
http://www.spiegel.de/internat...
4) The NSA may have worked to weaken encryption standards in order to make their task easier.
http://www.theverge.com/2013/9...
http://www.scientificamerican....5) The NSA has physically broken into the fiber plants of major public Internet companies (ie. Google), supposedly without their knowledge, in order to steal data sent only internally.

6) Major Internet companies, and all telcos, have willingly shared much or all of their client's communications with the NSA.

8) The NSA has hacked into at least one major supplier of SIM cards, in order to spy on calls made from the phones made with them.

Great idea, it was lagging behind
According to a test by The Verge, this was pretty sorely needed: "The native Safari made the new Retina machine look good: 13 hours and 18 minutes. Google’s Chrome, on the other hand, forced the laptop to tap out at 9 hours and 45 minutes."
