Re:Anyone know of a good free MySQL GUI?
The preview version of Toad for MySql is decent enough. (This assume though that you're using 'doze) http://www.toadsoft.com/toadmysql/toad_mysql.htm/

Re:No, buy a SQL book
toad does more than oracle now
their mysql admin tool rocks
http://www.toadsoft.com/toadmysql/toad_mysql.htm
they also have a sqlserver version now too
http://www.toadsoft.com/toadsqlserver/toad_sqlserv er.htm
If you use mysql, oracle or sqlserver you are missing out if you have not tried toad. -

Re:No, buy a SQL book
But MS SQL and DB2 don't deserve to be linked into the same category.
I was actually giving Postgre the benefit of the doubt by lumping it in with SQL Server and DB2. I've never used it, but I've heard good things about it. I was planning on giving it a shot once a version of Toad came out that supports it. -
Re:SQL Server
Not to mention that the MS SQL client-side tools rock and make developing for SQL server, dare I say, kinda fun. The only thing that comes close for Oralce is TOAD.

WinSQL Lite and Free version of TOAD
You do not seem to have a databse/development section, so I guess this would go under utility category. I use these two utilities on a regular basis for database admin/query work. Free version of TOAD is a previous version of the very popular and very populare and capable Oracle DB admin/query tool (Tool for Oracle Application Developers). Must be re-downloaded every two months or so, but no personal information necessary to download. WinSQL Lite is a scaled-down version of a commercial application that works against any ODBC/JDBC connection. You are required to submit personal info in order to get a free license key for the lite version.

Re:8000 developers?
...and they still can't make an sqlplus client that supports readline.Do you need sophisticated, automated input? Use sqlloader. Need sophisticated, automated output? Use rman. Need sophisticated, automated schema management? Use sqlplus.
Oracle comes with gobs of very powerful tools, and sqlplus is just not designed to do what you think it should be doing. It seems like you are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It's like complaining that climbing a fire escape is hard when you live on the third flool. Use the stairs.
BTW, if your doing SW development with oracle, use tora(free) or toad($$$). Both these tools make poking around and doing arbitrary queries a snap. Or, take your pick of the thousands of jdbc-based apps that live on sourceforge.

Re:I guess Oracle didn't help in the transitionI don't think they're trying to lock anyone in, I just think they realize that generating thousands or millions of INSERT statements is a really crappy way to move a database. Using a specialized bulk extract/import tool is usually a lot easier and a lot faster.
All of the major database have utilities to import/export data in user-defined formats, so I can't see that Oracle not providing an instant "generate sql script" command is keeping anyone from moving anything off of Oracle. Besides if you really want to do it, you can get free Toad. Works great.

Re:DB2 on Linux?
What are you talking about?
PL/SQL is very powerful. How much programming have you done in it?
BTW: There is still a free beer version of TOAD but I'd go for the pay version.
It's not that expensive and anyway, your firm should pay for it.
get it at www.toadsoft.com -
SQL Dev't EnvironmentsSadly, it seems like most of the strong Oracle development tools are Windows only - cases in point:
Golden, PL/Edit, http://www.benthicsoftware.com/
and
TOAD, the Tool for Oracle Application Developers, http://www.toadsoft.com/ .
If you can, keep a windows box to run these and your applications and just hit the server running on Linux, over SQL*Net.
