I just need a phone for email, testing, and phone calls. I don't use maps or "apps". The only tracking that I have to worry about is from the cell provider (if using cell service at all).
This is one of the most poorly thought out posts I've seen on Slashdot in a very long time, unless this is a lot of sarcasm that I'm just not picking up on.
Web sites shouldn't be taking down hate speech because it is defined differently in every municipality on the planet
That makes no sense, whatsoever. What are you saying, that because somebody can say, "I define this phrase to mean something different from common usage", that no web site should ever block said word? That's really fucking stupid.
They shouldn't be taking down fake accounts because everyone's definition of fake -vs- legitimate varies.
Again, what the fuck are you talking about? The word "fake" has a meaning. It's not a made up word. It's a real word, with real meaning.
Don't try to stop Russian election trolls because the trolls are almost indistinguishable from valid commentary.
In this case, I agree. Your stupid fucking post is indistinguishable from what a Russian troll would post. Namely: "nothing means anything, and anything means whatever you want."
Free speech is free speech
Free speech has NOTHING to do with non-governmental organizations or websites. Nothing. Take a 5th grade civics class and learn what "free speech" means. It doesn't mean that I have to freedom to walk into your living room and scream racial slurs at you.
You need to seriously get your head out of your ass. Web site operators do and should have an obligation to be responsible for what is on their web site. If YOU want to have a web site where anybody can post anything, go right ahead. It'll be a a pile of useless garbage in hours. Responsible web site operators not only have an obligation to maintain what's on their web sites, but they also need to if they're going to have any sort of functional web site. What you're advocating for is what... a troll/spambot farm?
In business, your competition IS your enemy. That's not an exaggeration. It's not life or death, but it's financial life or death. I work for a small, successful retailer, and we won't do business with Amazon. At all. We don't sell through them. We don't buy from them. We don't even buy company snacks at Whole Foods any more. Whether it has that much of a difference to either us or them is immaterial. We're in a financial fight for our lives, and we're not going to give up a penny or any information to our competition.
Mozilla shouldn't have anything to do with Google. Zero. They need to find some other way to sustain themselves other than sucking from the teat of the company that's trying to kill them (financially).
Well, who says you need to use those applications? You can run Lineage, and then not use any data-stealing "apps" like Google*, FAcebook*, Amazon*, Uber, Lyft, etc. The whole modern world is under this insane delusion that *nobody* can survive without using the same "apps" they themselves use. I happily live my life without giving up my data to companies like that.
You know, I was originally behind what he was trying to do, but now I just see the guy as a self-serving asshole. He shits on everybody with no apparent rhyme or reason: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/12/world/europe/ecuador-assange-wikileaks.html. I do think that getting government secrets out in the open is important, but there's a right way and a wrong way to do it. He's done it the wrong way.
In the days before GPS, it was common to drive with a folded map on your steering wheel, trying to figure out where you were and how to get to your destination. Way more dangerous than texting while driving IMHO.
I don't know a lot of people who stared at paper maps while driving. You'd look at it, figure out where to go, and then drive.
I do see people staring at their GPS while driving every single day.
Who the hell uses "VR"? It's a stupid gimmick that companies have been dumping money into for years. Who the hell wants this, and what's the point? And, even if there was some use for "VR", who in their right mind would buy hardware from Facebook? This is an awful, useless article.
Also interesting that Trump/GOP want to subsidize this when multiple sats are about to come on-line with 1G bandwidth with 20 ms pings across the globe and for under $70/month.
I would imagine they've been getting some good bribes recently from the telecom industry.
At this point, Google knows where you are, physically, every second of every day. They also know exactly what you do on the web, what you do via email, and what you do on your phone. Is everybody really OK with this? One company knowing literally everything they can possibly know about you, in exchange for a bit of convenience? That seems insane to me.
I ask people if they mind, somewhere, some marketing bro could very well be analyzing their choice of tampons and porn, or their physical location for every minute of every day, or even when and how often they poop. Most people, surprisingly, don't care. I have nothing to hide, but I do have a basic sense of dignity, which I think must be lacking from most people today. People literally would rather have their instantaneous entertainment fix than know that their privacy is being preserved. I think it's completely bizarre. I constantly feel like I'm the last human in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Google definitely does respond to customers. When I have a problem or question about advertising, somebody usually gets right back to me.
When you say help with Google products, are you a customer or a data feeder? They don't respond (or have any reason to respond) to people who feed them their data.
Actually, it wasn't so much hybrids that Toyota bet on, but hydrogen fuel cells. They're a super good idea, maybe better than batteries, but it looks like batteries have the inertia.
You're right. The US doesn't lead by example in anything that I can think of. Jesus, that's depressing.

I buy things in stores. I talk to the salespeople. It's much simpler that way.

... so are you putting yourself up as a smart guy for not having any say in how a company that you own a fraction of is run? I'm confused.

You mean like your cell phone?
Yes. You're not required to use a cell phone, believe it or not.
How about laptops with built in microphones?
If you're running Windows or Linux, or OSX, you have control over your own microphone on your computer.
Instead we let anyone walk into the country with no oversight *simply because* it creates problems that can be blamed on the president.
You're an idiot.
Forced-vax nazis bring out the iron boot, force people to undergo controversial medical procedures against their will
You're a fucking moron.

Their "best thing going"? How much money do they make from it now?
That's why it makes such a great phone to use: nobody's tracking it, including Microsoft.
If you want Google to do what Apple does you're gonna need to pay $1500/phone + support contract and at some point you'll be forced to upgrade.
Or, you could just not use a "smart" phone.
Or you could do what I do: use a Windows Phone when I need a "smart" phone.
At this point, Google knows where you are, physically, every second of every day. They also know exactly what you do on the web, what you do via email, and what you do on your phone. That is simple lack of awareness.
Lack of awareness of what? Of how Google makes money? Is that a complicated idea?
I have one question for people who think I'm crazy when I say I don't use Google/Android: Where do you think Google makes its money?
rightful owner
The "rightful owner" of a Facebook account is Facebook. The "rightful owner" of a Gmail account is Google.
It's not theft if you don't own it to begin with.
Google definitely does respond to customers. When I have a problem or question about advertising, somebody usually gets right back to me.

Thanks to OTA updates, the car gets regular upgrades even a year after purchase
I won't buy a car that needs "updates". Anything that needs software updates needs them because it was written badly to begin with.
